Valve made Steam Families available to all users on September 11, 2024. It combines the former Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View features, but access is intended for close family members in the same household, and not every game can be shared.
What Steam Families changes
Steam Families brings game sharing and family controls together in one system. A family can have up to six members. Shared games remain owned by the person who bought them; each member plays on their own Steam account and keeps their own achievements. Save-game behavior varies by game. Valve announced the launch on September 11, 2024, and its current Steam Families User Guide & FAQ describes the feature and its limits.
Who can join a Steam Family?
Steam Families is intended for close family members in one household. Steam Support says account activity must indicate that a prospective member belongs to the same household as existing members. Valve has not publicly explained which activity it evaluates, so there is no reliable checklist for predicting whether an invitation will qualify.
If someone cannot join, Steam Support identifies three likely reasons:

- The account activity does not show that the person belongs to the same household.
- The person is still subject to a cooldown after leaving another family.
- The family slot they would occupy is still in its own cooldown period.
How to set up a Steam Family
- Open Store, then Account Details, and select Family Management. Family management is also available from the Steam client, mobile device, or web browser.
- Create a Steam Family.
- Invite eligible members and assign each person an Adult or Child role.
Games are shared automatically with family members, though adults can restrict which games a child can access. Children cannot manage the family. Adults can set parental controls, handle child purchase requests, and use account recovery for a child after that child has been in the family for 30 days.
Can family members play at the same time?
Yes, if they are playing different games from the family library. To play the same game simultaneously, the family needs multiple copies of that game. For example, one family copy can be in use by one member while another member plays a different shared title; two members who want to play the same title at once need two copies.

Which games can be shared?
Eligibility is not universal. A game or its downloadable content may be unavailable for sharing because of publisher settings, technical limitations, third-party keys, accounts or subscriptions, operating-system support, regional restrictions, free-to-play status, or a title being private or excluded. Check the individual game in Steam rather than assuming it will appear in the family library. Steam Support maintains the current eligibility information in its Steam Families FAQ.
Shared games can be played offline only when the particular game supports Family Sharing. Offline access is therefore a game-specific capability, not a blanket guarantee of Steam Families.

Leaving a family and cooldowns
An adult who leaves generally has to wait one year before creating or joining another Steam Family. A vacated family slot also has a separate one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it. If someone accidentally left, Steam says they may rejoin their last family without waiting, provided there is room.
Important account and rule considerations
Family sharing does not transfer ownership of a game or make account activity risk-free. Valve warns that cheating or fraud while playing a shared game can affect the owner, including possible VAC consequences. Review Valve’s current rules and FAQ before relying on shared access, particularly if multiple people use the same library.
