Yes—but the change is narrower than the headline suggests. Google and Valve ended the dedicated Steam for Chromebook Beta on January 1, 2026, according to a ChromeOS warning reported by 9to5Google. This did not shut down Steam, delete users’ Steam purchases, end ChromeOS updates, or make every form of gaming on a Chromebook impossible.
What ended was the officially integrated ChromeOS environment that installed and ran selected PC games locally on supported Chromebooks. Access through that environment is no longer a supported option; cloud gaming, Steam Remote Play, and an unofficial Linux installation remain possible alternatives, with important limitations.
What ended on January 1, 2026?
The discontinued product was Steam for Chromebook Beta, Google’s ChromeOS integration for running a limited selection of Steam games locally. The project was associated with Google’s Borealis gaming environment and was designed for a restricted group of newer, relatively powerful Chromebooks.

The end date comes from a warning reportedly displayed in the ChromeOS Launcher. The notice said the beta would conclude on January 1, 2026 and that games installed through the beta would no longer be playable on the device. That date has now passed.

This is not the same as any of the following:
- Steam shutting down as a company or storefront;
- Valve revoking games purchased through Steam;
- ChromeOS support ending for a Chromebook;
- the Linux development environment being removed;
- cloud gaming services becoming unavailable.
The most accurate description is that the official Steam-on-ChromeOS experiment ended.
A short timeline
- 2022: Steam on ChromeOS entered beta after an earlier, unstable alpha phase.
- August 7, 2025: Reports surfaced about a ChromeOS warning announcing the beta’s January 1, 2026 end date. 9to5Google reported the notice, and Ars Technica covered the same shutdown.
- January 1, 2026: The reported deadline passed and the dedicated beta was withdrawn.
- September 14, 2026: The beta should be treated as discontinued, even though some Google support documentation still displays its old instructions.
Are your Steam games gone?
No. The purchase remains associated with your Steam account. The shutdown concerns access through the former Chromebook Beta environment, not deletion of games from Steam’s servers or your account library.
Games installed through the beta were reported as becoming unplayable through that environment after the deadline. A particular title may still be usable in another way:
- on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer that supports it;
- through a cloud service that supports that exact game;
- using Steam Remote Play from another gaming PC;
- through a manual Linux Steam installation on a compatible Chromebook.
None of these routes is guaranteed for every game. A Steam license does not automatically mean that a cloud service supports the title, that the Linux version works, or that the Chromebook has sufficient graphics performance.
Why the story is confusing
Google’s Steam for Chromebook Help page still describes the beta, including installation instructions and hardware requirements. That page is inconsistent with the reported January 1, 2026 sunset and should be treated as legacy documentation unless Google updates it.
An old Launcher entry or installer therefore does not prove that the beta is still supported. Product documentation can remain online after an experiment has ended.

Which Chromebooks supported the beta?
Google’s published beta requirements listed:
- an Intel Core i3 or better, or AMD Ryzen 3 or better;
- at least 8 GB of RAM;
- at least 128 GB of storage;
- a model and board configuration on the supported-device list.
Those specifications were minimums, not performance guarantees. The beta had known bugs, crashes, regressions, performance problems, and limited title availability. Google’s earlier alpha documentation described the feature as unstable and restricted to selected recent Chromebooks. The later ChromeOS beta announcement expanded support to additional Intel 12th-generation and AMD Ryzen 5000 C-Series systems.

Meeting the CPU, RAM, and storage requirements never meant that every Steam game would run. Game compatibility, graphics drivers, storage speed, thermal limits, and the device’s exact configuration all mattered.
Can Steam still run on a Chromebook?
Official Steam for Chromebook Beta
No—not as a supported program. Chromebook Plus branding does not automatically restore the discontinued integration. A newer Chromebook Plus model may be better suited to Linux gaming or cloud streaming, but that is separate from the former beta.
Linux Steam: possible, but unofficial
ChromeOS’s built-in Linux development environment may let some users install the Linux version of Steam. This is not a continuation of the official beta, and results vary sharply by device and game.
Potential problems include weak integrated graphics, insufficient RAM or storage, missing acceleration, controller issues, audio problems, suspend/resume failures, and Windows games that do not work reliably through Proton. School- or work-managed Chromebooks may also block Linux entirely.

- Open Settings.
- Find Linux development environment, usually under About ChromeOS or the device’s Developers section. Labels can vary by ChromeOS release.
- Enable Linux if the device and administrator policy permit it.
- Download the Linux Steam installer from Steam’s official download page.
- Install it inside the Linux environment.
- Test a lightweight, known Linux-compatible game before buying anything specifically for the Chromebook.
- Check graphics acceleration, controller input, audio, storage, and suspend/resume behavior.
Do not assume that a universal command such as sudo apt install steam works on every Chromebook Linux container. Package availability, architecture, dependencies, graphics support, and ChromeOS configuration differ.

Android Steam apps
Installing Steam or Steam Link from Google Play is not a replacement for the native beta. Google’s beta documentation specifically warned against using those apps for this purpose because of possible performance problems. Android Steam Link may be useful in an appropriate Remote Play setup, but it does not restore local PC-game support.
The practical alternatives in 2026
1. Cloud gaming
For most Chromebook owners, cloud gaming is the simplest replacement because the game runs on a remote server rather than on the Chromebook.
NVIDIA GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW supports Chromebooks through a supported browser or service interface. NVIDIA lists these requirements:
- at least 4 GB of RAM;
- Chrome version 77 or later;
- 15 Mbps for 720p at 60 frames per second;
- 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 frames per second;
- 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 frames per second;
- recommended latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.
Google says GeForce NOW can connect to supported libraries from Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox. That can let you stream some games you already own, but a Steam purchase does not guarantee GeForce NOW support. Availability is title-specific, and current plan features, queues, session limits, and regional availability vary.
Cloud streaming also depends on stable Wi-Fi or wired networking, latency, data allowances, and the service’s current catalog. It is not a restored local Steam installation.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming offers browser-based access to an eligible Xbox subscription catalog where the service is available. Google has promoted it as a Chromebook-compatible gaming option. It is better understood as subscription access to a changing catalog, not a way to play your existing Steam library.

Amazon Luna
Google has also identified Amazon Luna as a Chromebook cloud-gaming option. Its catalog, membership model, supported games, controller requirements, and ownership rules differ from Steam and should not be treated as a direct replacement.
2. Steam Remote Play
If you own a separate gaming PC, Steam Remote Play can stream a game from that computer to a Chromebook or another client device. The Chromebook acts as the screen and input device while the gaming PC does the processing.
This can be a good solution for someone who already owns a capable computer. It still requires that computer to be powered on and available, plus a strong local network or reliable internet connection. It is not local gaming on the Chromebook.
3. A dedicated Steam device
If dependable local Steam gaming is the priority, a Windows gaming laptop, desktop, or Steam Deck-class handheld is a more appropriate purchase than a Chromebook. These devices generally offer broader compatibility and more predictable access to the PC Steam ecosystem, though they cost more, require more maintenance, and may have shorter battery life.
A Chromebook can still be the better choice for web work, school, long battery life, simplicity, automatic updates, and a lower purchase price. It simply should not be bought in 2026 on the assumption that it includes official local Steam support.

Common questions and failure cases
My Chromebook still shows Steam. What should I do?
Do not interpret the Launcher entry or Google’s old Help page as proof that the beta remains supported. The reported shutdown date has passed. If the old environment no longer launches games, reinstalling it is unlikely to restore official support.

Can I bypass the shutdown with a ChromeOS flag or developer mode?
Community workarounds may exist, but they are not supported solutions. Flags and unofficial launchers can break after ChromeOS updates, reduce security, erase local data, or fail on managed devices. Use them only if you understand the risks and have a reliable recovery plan.
Will every Chromebook that supports Linux run Steam?
No. Linux app support does not imply adequate 3D performance. The Chromebook may support Linux applications while lacking the graphics capability, drivers, memory, storage, or Proton compatibility needed by a particular game.
Does the end of Steam support mean my Chromebook has stopped receiving updates?
No. ChromeOS automatic-update support is a separate, model-specific policy. Google says many newer Chromebooks receive up to 10 years of automatic updates, but the exact date depends on the model. Check Google’s Chromebook Auto Update policy or the Chrome Enterprise device list.

Google maintains a separate schedule for Chrome app support, including a July 2026 milestone for ChromeOS releases supporting Chrome apps in kiosk mode and broader retirement extending into 2028. That does not explain or reverse the Steam Beta shutdown.
What this means for Chromebook buyers
Do not buy a Chromebook in 2026 expecting official local Steam gaming, even if the model has a fast processor, 8 GB or more of RAM, or Chromebook Plus branding. Those specifications may improve cloud gaming or an experimental Linux setup, but they do not recreate the discontinued Google- and Valve-integrated beta.
Choose cloud gaming if you have dependable broadband and the service supports the games you want. Try Linux Steam only if you are comfortable troubleshooting and your Chromebook has suitable hardware. If local, broad Steam compatibility is non-negotiable, choose dedicated gaming hardware instead.
