Yes—if an offer explicitly says “free-to-keep” and you claim it before the deadline, the game is intended to remain available in your account after the promotion ends. A Steam Free Weekend is different: it grants temporary access only for the event window. Epic advertises a free game every week, with a new game available each Thursday on PC and mobile, but each offer has its own dates and conditions.
Free-to-keep vs. temporary access
“Free-to-keep” describes a limited-time promotion in which claiming the game within the offer period adds it to your account for access afterward, subject to the offer’s terms. The promotion deadline limits when you can claim it; it does not, by itself, mean access expires when the promotion ends.

Temporary access is not an ownership claim. A Steam Free Weekend lets you play during the event window, and access ends when that window closes unless you separately obtain the game. Steam’s Jump Space announcement states, “This is a Free Weekend, not Free-To-Keep forever.” Steam’s Free Weekend announcements show event-specific terms and dates; the Jump Space dates are an example, not a recurring schedule.
How the offers compare
| Offer type | What you get | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Steam free-to-keep promotion | A lasting account claim only when the individual offer says the game is free to keep and you claim it in time. | The offer wording, claim deadline, required storefront account, and any regional or other conditions shown on the offer page. |
| Steam Free Weekend | Temporary play access for the event window; it is not a free-to-keep claim. | The event’s start and end time. Steam announcements specify dates for each event. |
| Epic Games Store giveaway | A game offered to claim during a limited promotional period. Check the active offer’s terms to confirm what happens after claiming. | The title, end date and time, account or device requirements, and any regional conditions on the live page. |
| Free-to-play game | A game listed in a free-to-play category, not necessarily a limited-time giveaway. | The game’s listing and any separate terms for optional content or access. |
How often does Epic give away free games?
Epic Games Store’s official Free Games page advertises a free game every week and says a new game is available each Thursday on PC and mobile. That is the storefront’s published cadence, not a promise that a particular game will return or that every offer is identical in every region. Check the live page for the current title and its deadline before claiming.

How to tell whether a game will remain available
- Open the game’s offer page in the relevant storefront. Confirm whether it describes a claim or temporary access; do not infer permanence from the word “free” alone.
- Read the offer wording. Look for an explicit free-to-keep claim. “Free Weekend” means access is limited to the stated event period.
- Check the deadline and conditions. Note the exact end time and any region, device, account, or other restrictions displayed on the page.
- Complete the claim before the deadline. Follow the storefront’s claim flow and verify that the offer is recorded in the account associated with that store.
Free-to-play is a separate category
Free-to-play describes a game’s normal pricing category; it is not another name for a temporary weekend or a limited-time giveaway. Epic lists a Free-to-Play section alongside its giveaway information, and Steam maintains a separate Free to Play catalog. A game can therefore be free to access under its listed category without being part of a limited-time claim promotion.

Epic’s page publishes a weekly, Thursday cadence for its giveaways. Steam’s Free Weekend announcements are tied to individual event windows; the available announcements do not establish one universal schedule or policy for every Steam promotion. Treat each store page as the authority for that offer rather than assuming the two stores use the same mechanics or terms.
