Google ended its official Steam for Chromebook beta on January 1, 2026. That means the Chromebook models and games still shown on Google’s help page are historical beta listings—not a current promise that Steam will install or run on those devices. You can still play some PC games on a Chromebook through cloud gaming or streaming from a gaming PC; installing Steam in ChromeOS’s general Linux environment is a separate, unofficial experiment.
Does Steam work on ChromeOS in 2026?
It depends on what you mean by “Steam on a Chromebook.” Google’s optimized Steam integration, called Borealis, was part of the Steam for Chromebook Beta, which was scheduled to end on January 1, 2026. Reports reproducing Google’s notice said games installed through that integration would no longer be available to play after the program ended (Tom’s Hardware; PC Gamer).
Google’s Steam for Chromebook help page still contains former hardware requirements, device names and tested games. Treat it as historical documentation unless Google updates or restores the feature. Google’s current general Chromebook gaming guidance points instead to options such as Android games and GeForce NOW.

Quick choice: Check GeForce NOW first if you want to use eligible games you already own. Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming for a subscription catalog, remote streaming if you already have a gaming PC, or a Windows/Linux gaming computer if local Steam installs and offline play are the priority.

For the complete historical list and Google’s former beta requirements, see Google’s retained support page. If your exact model is absent, do not assume a similar name or a Chromebook Plus label makes it eligible for any native Steam feature.
Games Google tested in the former beta
Google’s historical compatibility list included examples such as A Short Hike, Among Us, Barotrauma, Mirror’s Edge, Montaro, Neon Abyss, Business Tour and Poly Bridge 2. These were games Google reported testing on qualifying beta devices—not a current working list or a guarantee for every Chromebook.

The beta relied on Linux and Proton compatibility rather than running a standard Windows installation. A game’s Steam store badge does not certify ChromeOS compatibility. Linux builds and Proton results differ by title; anti-cheat systems, Windows-only launchers, graphics features, codecs, controllers and input behavior can all cause problems. The former beta also had performance limits, so even a game that launched might not run well.
How to play PC games on a Chromebook now
1. Use GeForce NOW for supported Steam games
GeForce NOW runs games on NVIDIA’s servers and streams the video to your Chromebook. It can connect supported libraries from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PC Game Pass and Ubisoft Connect, but owning a game does not by itself make it streamable: the specific title must be available on GeForce NOW. Check the service and game information and system requirements before signing up.
- Open GeForce NOW in Chrome or use the supported Chromebook experience.
- Sign in to or create an NVIDIA account.
- Connect the relevant game-store account, such as Steam.
- Search for the title in GeForce NOW. Confirm it is supported before expecting to play.
- Launch it and sign in to the store if prompted.
Streaming saves local storage and makes Chromebook graphics performance less important, but it depends on a reliable, low-latency connection. Image quality and responsiveness can suffer on weak Wi-Fi or a busy network. Queues, session limits and other features vary by plan and can change; check NVIDIA’s current membership details rather than relying on old prices or plan descriptions. Google announced a Chromebook GeForce NOW Fast Pass promotion in 2025, but eligibility and terms are offer-specific; verify the current promotion details before counting on it.

2. Use Xbox Cloud Gaming for a subscription catalog
Open Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser and sign in with a Microsoft account. Access depends on the applicable Game Pass plan and regional availability; the games available can change. A controller is recommended for most console-style games. Xbox Cloud Gaming is separate from Steam: it does not unlock your Steam purchases. Check Microsoft’s service overview and current plan information for what is included where you live.

If you already have a Windows or Linux gaming PC, remote streaming can let it run your Steam games while the Chromebook acts as the screen and input device. The PC must be available, and a stable home network is essential. This can reach games that are not offered by a cloud service, but setup and network quality matter. It is streaming, not local installation: the Chromebook itself does not become a gaming PC.
4. Treat Linux Steam as an unsupported experiment
Borealis was a Steam-specific ChromeOS environment with its own packages, drivers and dependencies. Crostini is ChromeOS’s general Linux development environment; installing Steam there is not a continuation of official Steam for Chromebook support. Steam may install or run games in Crostini on some devices, but there is no guarantee of performance, compatibility or continued operation after ChromeOS updates. Graphics acceleration, Proton, anti-cheat, available memory and storage can all be obstacles. If you experiment, back up important files first and avoid relying on old instructions that ask you to enable ChromeOS flags, switch to a development channel or run alpha-era setup commands. Do not treat Developer Mode as a casual fix; changing device modes can carry security and data-loss risks.

Do not buy a Chromebook because it appears on the former beta list or is branded Chromebook Plus. Neither is a current native-Steam guarantee. For cloud gaming, prioritize a good screen, comfortable controls and stable Wi-Fi; the remote server does most of the game rendering. For Linux experimentation, hardware matters more, but even capable specs cannot guarantee a game will work.
- Memory: 8 GB is a practical minimum for multitasking and Linux experimentation; 16 GB gives more headroom. Chrome tabs, Android apps and a Linux game can compete for memory. Historical Chromium guidance warned that 8 GB devices could struggle with games requiring 6 GB or more of RAM.
- Processor and graphics: Prefer a modern Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processor over entry-level hardware if you intend to experiment locally. Integrated graphics and shared memory remain meaningful limits.
- Storage: 128 GB is a sensible floor; 256 GB or more is more practical for local Linux games. ChromeOS, Linux files, updates, shader caches and game installs all use space.
- Display: A 1080p or 1200p screen is a reasonable choice for local play. Higher resolutions can increase rendering demands and may create scaling issues.
- Network and controls: For cloud play, prioritize reliable Wi-Fi 6 or newer, Bluetooth or USB controller support, and a comfortable keyboard. A compatible Ethernet adapter can help diagnose Wi-Fi latency.
- Software support: Check how long the specific model will receive ChromeOS updates, especially if you are buying used. School- or employer-managed devices may block Linux, services or account changes.
Google’s former beta minimums were an Intel Core i3 or Ryzen 3 or better, 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Those were requirements for Borealis during its beta, not a current recipe for installing Steam. Google’s old page explains how to check hardware using Ctrl + Search + Esc and storage under Settings → Device → Storage Management; labels may differ by ChromeOS version.
Why a game may fail or run poorly
- Compatibility: A Steam “Playable” or Linux indicator is not a ChromeOS certification. Proton support varies, and some anti-cheat systems or launchers prevent a game from running.
- Graphics: Crostini may not provide the acceleration or graphics features a particular game needs. Integrated graphics can also limit frame rate and visual quality.
- Memory and storage: Browser tabs and background apps compete with games for RAM. Large games and their updates can quickly consume local space.
- Resolution and scaling: A high-resolution panel increases the rendering load; scaling may also make controls or interface elements awkward.
- Input and session behavior: Controller support, mouse lock, keyboard mapping, audio and suspend/resume can vary by game.
- Updates: ChromeOS or game updates can change whether an unofficial Linux setup works.
If a Linux game starts but performs badly, close other windows and background apps, lower in-game graphics settings and reduce resolution—the same broad steps Google recommended during the beta. If it will not launch, investigate the title’s current Linux/Steam Deck status and community Proton reports, but remember those reports are not official ChromeOS support.
Cloud gaming stutters: a quick checklist
- Use a strong 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 connection; move closer to the router or try a compatible Ethernet adapter.
- Pause downloads and other video streams sharing the connection.
- Use a low-latency controller connection and reduce streaming resolution if bandwidth is limited.
- Check NVIDIA’s current Chromebook troubleshooting advice and system requirements.

For casual play, Android and browser games may be all you need. If offline access, mods, anti-cheat multiplayer or a broad library of native Steam installs is the goal, a Windows/Linux gaming laptop or gaming handheld is a more dependable purchase than a Chromebook. Chromebook Plus can offer better baseline hardware for everyday work and cloud gaming, but it is not synonymous with native Steam support.
