Steam Performance Data vs. In-Game Telemetry: What Developers Should Use

Steam’s performance tools reveal local and bounded platform signals; custom in-game telemetry captures the gameplay events and context developers choose to record.

Use Steam’s performance tools for local system signals and, where eligible, Steam Deck performance reported by opted-in players. Use developer-instrumented in-game telemetry to answer questions about custom gameplay events and the context around them. They serve different purposes and can complement each other; neither replaces a detailed profiler when you need to find the cause of a performance bottleneck.

What “Steam performance data” means

The phrase can refer to several different tools and datasets. They are not interchangeable, and none should be mistaken for a complete, general-purpose gameplay analytics pipeline.

Steam’s in-game performance overlay

The Steam client overlay is a player-facing view of performance on the local machine. Depending on the system and supported hardware, it can show frame-rate information, distinguish generated frames, and display CPU/GPU information and system memory use. Valve’s June 30, 2025 announcement described the initial rollout as focused on Windows and common GPU hardware; some platforms and older or less common GPUs may not expose the full set of metrics. See Steam Support’s performance overlay FAQ and Valve’s overlay announcement.

This is useful for a quick look at what a player’s system is doing, not as a central developer backend that records arbitrary gameplay events. Valve also cautions that developers need more detailed profiling tools to investigate matters such as GPU blocking and core utilization.

Steamworks Steam Deck framerate reporting

Steamworks partners can view framerate information for eligible titles marked Steam Deck Verified. It reflects anonymized data from Steam Deck players who opted in, not a representative report for all PC players or all Steam Deck owners. Valve’s October 1, 2026 announcement states: “This data comes from Steam Deck players who have opted in to providing anonymized framerate data.” Read the Steamworks Development announcement for the data’s scope and interpretation caveats.

The dashboard includes sampled time such as loading screens, and player-selected frame limits can affect the reported distribution. Treat it as an in-the-wild signal from a bounded device population, not as a clean measure of gameplay-only performance or a universal PC benchmark.

Steamworks stats APIs

The Steamworks API reference describes ISteamUserStats functions for accessing and submitting stats, achievements, and leaderboards, and ISteamGameServerStats functions for game servers to set player stats and achievements. Those are documented Steam platform features; their presence does not establish a general-purpose arbitrary event analytics pipeline. See the Steamworks API reference.

SteamVR assessment

VR has a separate SteamVR performance-assessment overlay for resolution and frame rate. For VERIFIED/PLAYABLE results, its documentation says average frame time is calculated over a rolling window of the last 32 frames. Transient frame-time issues can be inspected in perfcriteria.txt, which lists frame times associated with a threshold violation. This is a VR compatibility and local troubleshooting aid, not player-behavior analytics. See SteamVR performance assessment documentation.

Choose the tool by the question

What you need to know Use What it tells you—and what it does not
How does the game behave on this test machine? Steam performance overlay, followed by a detailed profiler where needed Quick local frame and system signals; the overlay alone does not trace the cause of a bottleneck.
How is the game performing on Steam Deck in players’ hands? Steamworks framerate reporting for eligible Steam Deck Verified titles A bounded, opted-in Steam Deck signal affected by frame limits and sampled loading time; not an all-PC population report.
Do players reach a particular level, trigger an ability, or encounter a specific gameplay state? Developer-instrumented in-game telemetry The events and context the game team chooses to record; the Steam stats API reference does not document arbitrary custom-event analytics.
Is a VR title meeting frame-time or resolution expectations? SteamVR assessment overlay and its logs VR assessment and troubleshooting information, not gameplay behavior or broad player analytics.

How to combine platform signals and game telemetry

Use the Steam tools for the platform or local performance questions they actually cover, then add instrumentation for questions that require game-specific context. For example, an overlay can help inspect a local machine’s frame behavior, while custom telemetry can record which game state or event occurred. Steam Deck reporting can provide an additional view of eligible players’ framerate outcomes. These signals are complementary because their populations, granularity, and purposes differ.

When a reported symptom needs a technical explanation, move to a more detailed profiling tool rather than inferring a cause from an aggregate distribution or a few system counters. Platform reporting may flag where a performance concern deserves investigation; a profiler is the appropriate path for examining low-level bottlenecks.

Plan custom telemetry around the question

In-game telemetry is appropriate when the team needs data the platform reporting does not expose. Before instrumenting, define the question and the event schema: what event is recorded, what game context is needed to interpret it, and how the resulting data will be used. The developer is responsible for those choices and for managing collection. Legal and privacy requirements depend on the game’s jurisdictions and design; the platform documentation cited here does not establish those requirements.

Do not assume that Steam stats, achievements, and leaderboard interfaces cover every gameplay event a team may want to analyze. They are useful for their documented platform features; custom behavioral questions require a deliberate instrumentation approach.

Interpret the data without overgeneralizing

  • Check the population. A local overlay describes one running system; Steam Deck reporting describes opted-in Deck players for eligible titles; game telemetry describes the players and events your instrumentation captures.
  • Check what the measurement includes. Steam Deck reporting includes sampled loading time, and user-selected frame limits can shape its distribution.
  • Check hardware and platform support. Overlay metrics may be incomplete on some platforms or less common or older GPUs.
  • Separate symptoms from causes. A frame-rate result or system counter can point to an issue, but detailed profiling is needed to investigate GPU blocking, core utilization, or other low-level causes.
  • Keep VR assessment distinct. SteamVR’s frame-time and resolution assessment serves VR compatibility and troubleshooting, not general gameplay analytics.

Practical decision

For quick local performance checks, start with the Steam overlay. For a real-world Steam Deck signal, consult the eligible Steamworks report and account for its opt-in population and sampling caveats. For custom gameplay behavior, instrument the game around clearly defined questions. For causal performance analysis, use detailed profiling tools; for VR compatibility checks, use SteamVR’s assessment overlay and logs.
