Steam crossed 38 million concurrent users on September 22, 2024, reaching about 38.3 million people online at once. That was a platform milestone, not a count of people all playing games—and it is no longer Steam’s all-time peak.
What happened on September 22, 2024?
Steam passed the 38 million concurrent-user mark on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Contemporary reports put the peak at roughly 38.367 million. VGChartz, citing SteamDB, reported 38,367,277; Neowin, citing Steam’s statistics page, reported 38,365,632. The small difference is why the rounded figure of 38.3 million is the clearest way to describe the milestone.
VGChartz’s report and Neowin’s report documented the event at the time.
Does concurrent online mean actively playing?
No. Concurrent users is a platform-level count of Steam users online at the same time. It is distinct from the number actually in a game. GamingOnLinux reported that 12,270,218 users were in-game at the 2024 peak—far fewer than the total online.

Steam’s statistics page presents the overall concurrent-user count separately from player counts for individual games. SteamDB also describes its charts as tracking concurrent player counts; it updates the current top 1,000 games every five minutes and other games every ten minutes. Those refresh intervals are useful context when comparing rapidly changing tracker readings.
Is 38.3 million still Steam’s all-time record?
No. Valve’s official Steam statistics page displayed an all-time peak of 38,599,430 on October 8, 2026, surpassing the September 2024 milestone. The 38.3 million figure remains a significant historical threshold, but it should not be described as Steam’s current record.

What caused the 2024 surge?
The available accounts establish when Steam crossed the milestone and how large the count was, but they do not prove that a particular game, device, or event caused the increase. The record alone also does not establish a trend for the wider PC gaming market; it measures activity on Steam.
