The “60 seconds” in GamesBeat’s 2015 Steam-refund story meant the time needed to submit a request—not the time to get approval or receive money. In the demonstration, the request was still pending. Steam’s standard refund policy still generally uses a 14-day purchase window and fewer than two hours of playtime, but processing takes longer and some purchases follow different rules.
What the original 60-second demonstration showed
GamesBeat published Jeff Grubb’s article on June 4, 2015, shortly after Valve introduced its broad Steam refund policy. The page now carries a June 18, 2025 update date, but the story and demonstration describe the 2015 rollout. Grubb used a video to show a request for a $5 copy of the original Fallout, bought through PayPal. He said the process took less than a minute after clicking Support—and noted that the request was awaiting approval, not already paid.
The historical steps were straightforward: find the game in the Steam Library, click its Support link, select a problem such as “I purchased this by accident,” choose “I’d like to request a refund,” select a destination, give a reason, and submit. That is a useful record of the launch-era interface, not a current screen-by-screen guide. Read the original GamesBeat article.
Steam’s current standard refund rule
For ordinary games and software, Steam’s standard policy is to request a refund within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library playtime. Meeting those conditions makes a request eligible under the standard policy; it does not mean the money arrives instantly. You can still submit a request outside the standard limits, but Valve says it will review it rather than guarantee approval. Requests significantly beyond the 14-day window generally are not eligible.

The two-hour limit is a condition of the refund policy, not a formal trial period. If you are deciding whether to keep a game, remember that troubleshooting or testing it can add to counted playtime. Steam also reserves the right to restrict access to refunds if it believes the system is being abused, although it says eligible purchases can be submitted for refund without a fixed numerical limit. How to request a refund now
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Select Purchases, then choose the purchase you want help with.
- Select the problem that best describes the issue, then choose “I’d like to request a refund.”
- Complete the form, choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method if offered, and submit.
- Watch for Steam’s confirmation and processing emails.
Labels and layout can vary with language and whether you use a browser or the Steam client. Steam’s current request instructions are the reference; the Library Support link shown in the 2015 story is historical.

Request time is not payment time
Submitting the form may be quick. Review and payment are separate steps, and Steam does not promise approval within 60 seconds. For approved refunds, Steam says Wallet funds may appear within 24–48 hours. Refunds to other payment methods can take up to seven days to appear, and international payment methods may take longer. Choose Wallet only if you are comfortable keeping the money available for Steam purchases; it may be quicker, but it is not cash returned to your bank or card.

There is an additional wrinkle for a very recent purchase: if Steam approves a refund within 24 hours of purchase, it may cancel the original transaction instead of posting a separate refund. Your bank may take up to 30 days to confirm that it never received the funds and remove the authorization hold. A missing line-item credit in that situation does not necessarily mean the refund failed.

Purchases with different rules
- In-game purchases: For Valve-developed games, eligible purchases may be refundable within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party developers decide whether to enable refunds on those terms; Steam indicates availability at purchase. For a missing item, Steam recommends contacting the game’s support team first.
- Pre-orders: A pre-order can generally be refunded before release. After release, the standard 14-day and under-two-hours conditions apply. For some pre-orders bought more than six months earlier, a refund to the original payment method may not be available, although Wallet credit may be. A recipient of a gifted pre-order must initiate and approve removal of the gift before the purchaser can finish the request.
- Advanced Access: Steam says purchases that include Advanced Access follow its standard refund policy, with the 14-day period beginning at release under its pre-order guidance.
- Buying just before a sale: Steam says you can request a refund for an otherwise eligible purchase and buy it again at the sale price, provided you have not already requested a refund.
- Profile history: Refunding a game does not remove its playtime or achievements from your Steam Community Profile.

If you cannot find the purchase in Steam Support, check your purchase history and confirm you are signed into the account that paid for it. A purchase made on another account, or one outside the normal refund period, may not appear in the ordinary request flow. If you believe it should qualify, contact Steam Support with a clear explanation. If a request was rejected and you think it was mishandled, Steam says you can submit another inquiry with details.

After approval, allow the relevant processing time before treating an absent credit as a failure. Check whether Steam returned the money to Wallet or the original payment method you selected, and whether a recently completed transaction was canceled rather than credited. For a bank or card return that remains unclear after the stated window, consult Steam Support and your payment provider; international transactions can take longer.
The 2015 headline captured something real: Steam made the request itself low-friction. It never established that a refund was approved or paid in a minute. Today, the request can still be simple, but eligibility, review, refund destination, and payment processing determine when—and whether—the money comes back.
