That figure is a configurable ceiling, not a promise that a home network can sustain it or that choosing it will improve gameplay. The update also resets Pyrowave bitrate to automatic, so check the setting after installing the beta.
What the 1 Gbit/s setting means
Valve’s October 1, 2026 Steam Client Beta notes raise the maximum manual Pyrowave bitrate to 1 Gbit/s. This is a setting limit, not a measured throughput result, a minimum internet plan, or evidence that a stream will reach that rate. Valve publishes no latency figures by bitrate, network type, or hardware in these notes.
The warning is explicit: “Pyrowave manual bitrates can be increased up to 1 Gbit/s (more bandwidth increases latency!).” A higher bitrate may give the stream more room for visual detail, but it can also work against responsiveness. The notes do not identify a universally best value or quantify the latency cost, so the maximum should not be treated as a target for every setup.
Automatic or manual bitrate?
| Setting | What the update says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Valve says it improved automatic Pyrowave bitrate calculation for visual quality and reset the bitrate to the automatic default. | A previous manual choice should not be assumed to persist after updating. The notes do not publish a specific automatic bitrate or performance guarantee. |
| Manual | The beta allows a Pyrowave bitrate up to 1 Gbit/s and provides the @PyrowavePSNR and @PyrowaveHeightFactor convars to tune automatic calculation. | Valve warns that more bandwidth increases latency; it gives no recommended manual value or millisecond comparison. |
If you are unsure, leave the setting on automatic rather than assuming that the largest number is best. Manual adjustment is an option for users who want to tune their setup, not a requirement for Remote Play.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why did the bitrate reset?
The October 1 beta notes say Pyrowave bitrate “has been reset to the automatic default”. If your manually selected value changed after installing this build, that reset is expected behavior, not necessarily a problem with your client. Recheck the setting before streaming if you intended to keep using a particular manual value.
Other Remote Play changes in the beta
Alongside the bitrate changes, Valve lists several fixes and controls in the Steam Client Beta announcement:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- A fix for gradually increasing video latency when Pyrowave is used over slow network links.
- Reduced audio dropouts.
- A recovery dialog for cases where the network cannot handle the current streaming settings.
- A Steam menu option to stop desktop streaming.
The recovery dialog is useful when current settings exceed what a connection can handle; the notes do not describe its exact prompts or guarantee that it will resolve every network problem.
Is this available in the stable Steam client?
No stable-release date is given in Valve’s October 1 notes. The 1 Gbit/s ceiling and the other listed changes are for the Steam Client Preview/Beta channel; the announcement does not establish when, or whether on a particular schedule, they will reach the stable client.

How to think about bitrate and lag
Valve has described the tradeoff in earlier Remote Play controls, too. In an October 25, 2023 Steam Client update, Valve said its low-latency networking option “reduces latency at the cost of bandwidth.” That statement is context for the general tradeoff, not a measurement of the 2026 Pyrowave setting.
Remote Play Together is specifically described by Valve as streaming video, audio, input, and voice between players so they can play local multiplayer games remotely. That feature description does not mean every Remote Play streaming use case is identical to the Pyrowave bitrate changes in this beta. See Valve’s Remote Play Together announcement for its separate feature description.
