Steam September 2026 Revenue Estimated at $1.7 Billion; $20 Billion Year Remains a Forecast

Alinea Analytics estimates Steam generated $1.7 billion in September 2026 and $16.5 billion through September. Clearing $20 billion for the year would require about $3.5 billion in Q4; the annual record remains a forecast, not a confirmed result.

Alinea Analytics estimates Steam generated $1.7 billion in September 2026, its highest September estimate to date and 13% above the previous September record. The estimate puts Steam at $16.5 billion for January through September, making a $20 billion-plus year plausible—but not confirmed. Steam would need about $3.5 billion in the fourth quarter to exceed that mark.

How much money did Steam make in September 2026?

Alinea Analytics estimated Steam revenue at $1.7 billion for September 2026. The firm described it as the platform’s best September to date and 13% above the previous September record, set in September 2025. These are analyst estimates, not revenue figures published or confirmed by Valve. Alinea Analytics’ October 1 analysis is the primary source for the figures.

The same analysis estimated $5.5 billion in Steam revenue for the third quarter of 2026, up 12% year over year. For the first nine months of the year, Alinea estimated $16.5 billion, compared with $14.5 billion for January through September 2025.

Is Steam really on track to make $20 billion in 2026?

It is a plausible forecast, not a reported result. Based on Alinea’s $16.5 billion estimate through September, Steam would need about $3.5 billion in the fourth quarter to exceed $20 billion for 2026. That is an arithmetic implication of the nine-month estimate, not a separate published Q4 forecast.

Rhys Elliott, Alinea Analytics’ head of market analysis, forecast that Steam’s yearly revenue would “blow past $20B for the first time,” citing the release slate for the rest of the year. His statement is a prediction; as of October 4, 2026, the full-year total was not yet known and Valve had not confirmed it. TechSpot’s coverage repeats Alinea’s estimates and the approximate Q4 hurdle, but does not represent a separate measurement of Steam revenue.

What is behind the September estimate?

Alinea’s breakdown of the 500 top-grossing Steam games covered about three-quarters of its estimated September revenue. The figures below describe that top-500 group, not all Steam revenue:

Classification Alinea’s estimate What it describes
New intellectual property 20.5% of top-500 revenue Revenue attributed to new IP released in 2026
Established intellectual property 79.5% of top-500 revenue Established IP, including remakes and remasters
Free-to-play games 25.6% of top-500 revenue; 16% of titles A business-model classification, separate from IP status
Games released in 2026 33.6% of top-500 revenue A release-year classification

These percentages use different classification axes. New versus established IP describes franchise status; free-to-play describes a business model; the release-year share groups games by launch year. They are not mutually exclusive categories and should not be added together.

The title-level figures Alinea highlighted also combine different kinds of contributors. It estimated September revenue of $86.9 million for Wardogs, $30.4 million for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and $26.9 million for The Blood of Dawnwalker. Those amounts, too, are estimates rather than developer-reported earnings.

The breakdown therefore points to contributions from both premium releases and established free-to-play games.

What the $1.7 billion figure does—and does not—mean

Alinea’s analysis reports estimates for Steam as a platform and a breakdown of a sample of its top-grossing games. The reviewed analysis does not provide enough detail to independently reproduce the full estimation model or verify the underlying transactions. The figures should not be described as Valve’s official or audited revenue, profit, or the amount Valve retained after payments and other costs.
