If the Steam Store will not load, first check whether it also fails in a normal browser. A Store that works at store.steampowered.com but not in the Steam desktop client usually calls for a client restart, clearing embedded web data, or disabling web-view GPU acceleration. If it fails across browsers and devices, investigate a Steam outage or your network before changing Steam files or reinstalling.

Use the checks below in order. They separate client rendering trouble from browser problems and network blocks, so you can try the fix that matches your symptom without risking installed games.

Identify where the Store fails

Compare the Steam client with the Store website in a browser, then—if needed—with another device or connection. Open the Store, Steam Community, and Steam Support; note whether one page or all Steam sites fail.

What you observe Likely area Best first step
The Store fails in Steam, but loads in a browser Steam embedded web data, webhelper, or GPU rendering Restart Steam, clear its web data, then test with GPU acceleration off.
The Store fails in every browser and on multiple devices Steam outage, ISP, DNS, router, or network filtering Check Steam service guidance and test another network.
It works on a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi Router, DNS, ISP routing, or filtering Restart the router and test a wired connection if available.
The page is blank or black, or Steam reports that steamwebhelper is not responding Client rendering, graphics driver, or interfering software Restart Steam and disable GPU acceleration in web views.
Only Chrome or Edge fails Browser extension, profile, cache, or rendering Try a private window and another browser.
Steam works except on a school or work network Managed proxy, firewall, or blocked ports Test a personal connection; ask the network administrator if confirmed.
Only one Store page fails Page-specific or stale content Refresh it and try the page in another browser.

A blank page, endless spinner, missing images or buttons, “Could not connect to the Steam Network,” and “Access Denied” are different symptoms, not proof of one cause. The working client, browser, device, and network combinations are the useful clues.

Check whether Steam is having a wider problem

Valve recommends checking service status when timeouts affect Steam sites; if an outage or maintenance is affecting service, local cache changes will not restore access. See Valve’s Steam network troubleshooting guidance. This article does not make a live status claim.

  • Try the Store in a normal browser and check whether Community and Support pages load too.
  • Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If it fails there too, the issue is less likely to be isolated to your Steam client.
  • Try a phone hotspot or another trusted network. If Steam works there, focus on the home router, DNS, ISP, or filtering rather than reinstalling Steam.

If the whole service is unavailable, wait and retry later. Repeated client resets cannot fix a Steam-side outage.

Fix a Store that fails inside the Steam client

1. Exit Steam completely and reopen it

  1. In Steam, select Steam > Exit.
  2. On Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Steam did not close fully, end only remaining Steam-related processes, such as steam.exe or steamwebhelper.exe.
  3. Open Steam again and test the Store.

Restarting Steam is Valve’s first suggested remedy for webhelper rendering problems. Do not end unrelated Windows processes. See Valve’s guidance for Steam Client WebHelper issues.

2. Delete Steam’s embedded web data

Corrupted or stale embedded web data can leave Store pages blank, partially rendered, or stuck loading. In Steam, open Steam > Settings and look for Delete Web Browser Data. The control’s section and wording vary by client version and operating system; older clients may place web controls under Web Browser, while newer layouts may use another settings section. Confirm the deletion, restart Steam, and check the Store.

This removes embedded Steam web data, not installed games. You may need to sign in again or reload Store content. A community troubleshooting guide also documents deleting Steam’s browser cache and cookies: Steam community troubleshooting guide.

3. Turn off GPU acceleration in web views

Try this if the client Store is blank, black, or broken, or if steamwebhelper stops responding. Open Steam > Settings > Interface and turn off GPU accelerated rendering in web views (or the similarly named option), then restart Steam. The label may vary between client releases.

Valve notes that some video drivers can interfere with Steam content when acceleration is enabled. Update the graphics driver through your GPU or computer manufacturer if appropriate. Turning acceleration off is a rendering workaround and may reduce interface performance; it is not guaranteed to be a permanent fix. See Valve’s WebHelper troubleshooting steps.

4. Finish client updates and check beta participation

Let Steam complete pending updates, then restart the computer if the Store remains broken. If you are enrolled in a Steam beta and the problem began after a client update, test the stable client by opting out of the beta. Beta participation can introduce regressions, but it is not automatically the cause; joining a beta is not a first-line repair.

Fix the Store website in a browser

If the client works but the Store website does not, test the browser before changing Steam settings:

  1. Open a private or incognito window and load the Store. If it works there, an extension or existing browser profile data is a likely factor.
  2. Temporarily disable extensions that block ads, scripts, tracking, or network traffic. If this resolves the page, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.
  3. Clear cookies and cached files for Steam sites rather than wiping all browser history.
  4. Try another up-to-date browser. If Firefox works while Chrome or Edge does not, focus on the failing browser’s extensions, profile, cache, or hardware acceleration.
  5. For a browser-only rendering problem, test with browser hardware acceleration disabled, then restore your preferred setting if it makes no difference.

If the Store fails in every browser, the cause is more likely outside one browser profile. Compare another device and another network before troubleshooting browser settings further.

Check your network, VPN, proxy, and security filters

Restart the router and compare connections

  1. Exit Steam.
  2. Restart the modem or router using its manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Wait until the internet connection is restored, then open Steam and test the Store.
  4. If possible, compare with wired Ethernet or a phone hotspot.

A wired connection can help separate Wi-Fi interference from other network causes. Valve also recommends power-cycling network equipment for certain connectivity problems; see its network troubleshooting steps. For Steam Deck, Valve’s network guidance also recommends comparing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and checking router or proxy restrictions: Steam network troubleshooting.

Test VPNs, proxies, and traffic filters temporarily

Disconnect a VPN and test again. Check whether a system or browser proxy is enabled, and briefly isolate third-party web filtering or antivirus HTTPS inspection if you know how to do so safely. On a school, university, or work network, compare with a personal connection rather than trying to bypass its controls. Proxies and managed networks can block ports Steam requires; Valve notes those ports cannot simply be remapped to HTTP or changed to a custom range. Contact the network administrator if the personal connection works but the managed one does not.

If a filter proves to be the cause, restore protection and configure a narrowly scoped Steam exception using the security product’s supported method. Do not leave antivirus or a firewall disabled. A VPN may help compare routing in some cases, but it can also add latency or trigger further blocking; it is a diagnostic option, not a required Steam fix. Valve discusses proxies and interfering software in its network guidance and WebHelper guidance.

Flush the Windows DNS cache if another network works

If Steam loads on a hotspot but not your usual connection, clear Windows’ local DNS resolver cache as a limited test:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run ipconfig /flushdns.
  3. Restart Steam and retry the Store.

This clears cached DNS lookups on that Windows computer; it does not repair an outage, a network block, or a faulty router. DNS changes are not a universal fix. Valve’s network troubleshooting also advises reverting router DNS changes in some cases, so avoid changing multiple DNS settings at once while diagnosing the problem: Valve network guidance.

Consider recurring or suspicious symptoms

If failures reliably occur at certain hours, record when they happen and compare another network; Valve notes that time-of-day connection problems can point to ISP involvement. If Steam shows unexplained ads, redirects, or severe slowdowns, treat that differently from a simple loading failure: scan for malware or adware using security tools obtained from official, trusted sources. Valve warns that unwanted software can interfere with Steam: Steam security guidance.

Advanced Windows-only repairs

Try these only after the restart, embedded web-data, rendering, browser, and network checks. They are Windows steps and are documented in a community troubleshooting guide, not in the Valve support pages cited above.

Reset local Steam configuration

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter steam://flushconfig and press Enter.
  3. Follow any prompts, reopen Steam, and test the Store.

This resets local Steam configuration. It is distinct from deleting web data and is not a guaranteed fix. The command is documented here: Steam community troubleshooting guide.

Run it only if you are comfortable using an elevated Command Prompt. The example assumes Steam is installed in the default folder; if yours is elsewhere, use the actual path to SteamService.exe. The procedure is community-documented, not confirmed by the official Valve support pages cited here: Steam community troubleshooting guide.

Reinstall Steam without deleting your games

Reinstalling is a last resort for suspected damaged local client files, not a fix for an outage, ISP problem, router fault, or blocked network. Before uninstalling or removing files, locate your Steam installation and preserve the steamapps folder, which contains game files, and userdata if you want to retain local Steam data. Back up anything important and record the installation path. Do not delete the entire Steam directory without first protecting those folders.

When to contact Steam Support

Contact Steam Support if the Store still fails across browsers and networks after the relevant local checks, if only your account appears affected, or if you see unauthorized account activity or purchase, login, or access problems. Include the exact error, whether the browser version works, and which networks or devices you tested. For a managed school or workplace connection that alone blocks Steam, the network administrator is the more appropriate contact.
