Current-status note: As of August 10, 2026, the unofficial SteamStat.us monitor listed the Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers and tracked Valve game APIs as normal.
Yes, Steam experienced a widespread outage on Christmas Eve 2025—but it was a partial outage rather than a complete shutdown. The disruption began at approximately 1 p.m. Eastern Time and affected the Steam Store, Community pages, Web APIs, mobile access and some Valve online-game services. Many users could not load the Store or Community, while some installed single-player games continued to work.
The Store reportedly returned at about 3:36 p.m. ET, followed by broader recovery through the afternoon and overnight. However, Community pages, forums, Workshop features and some login functions remained unreliable for some users on Christmas Day. Valve did not publicly confirm a cause in the contemporaneous reporting reviewed, so theories about holiday traffic, CDN problems or a cyberattack remain unconfirmed.

What happened to Steam on Christmas Eve 2025?
Steam began experiencing a major service disruption on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, during Valve’s official Winter Sale. The sale ran from December 18, 2025, through January 5, 2026, making the timing especially inconvenient for people shopping for games, redeeming gifts or trying to download new purchases.
Reports started appearing at approximately 1 p.m. ET. Engadget reported more than 6,000 DownDetector reports around 1:15 p.m. A later Christmas Day follow-up from Notebookcheck cited a peak of 13,850 reports.
Those numbers need to be read correctly. DownDetector counts user-submitted reports, not confirmed unique users. They do not establish how many people were actually unable to use Steam, and they should not be described as the number of affected players.
The incident did not resemble Steam’s usual short Tuesday maintenance window. It happened on a Wednesday, Christmas Eve, and contemporaneous coverage described it as an unexpected service failure. There is no reviewed Valve documentation confirming that this specific incident was scheduled maintenance.
Steam outage timeline
| Approximate time | What was reported |
|---|---|
| About 1 p.m. ET, December 24 | Steam services began failing for many users. |
| About 1:15 p.m. ET | DownDetector showed more than 6,000 user reports. |
| About 3:36 p.m. ET | The Steam Store and website were reported back online in a contemporaneous Wccftech update. |
| Roughly 4–6 p.m. ET | Engadget’s checks found the main PC, mobile and Mac clients largely functional, with broader service recovery underway. |
| Christmas Day | The Store and some games were usable, but reports continued of unreliable Community pages, forums, Workshop features and login functions. |
| About 4 a.m. ET, December 25 | Engadget reported that the Store, Community, Web API and games appeared restored, while separate follow-up coverage still found partial problems. This reflects the fact that different Steam components recovered at different times. |
Wccftech also reported approximately 250,000 visits to a SteamDB status page during the incident. That figure shows how many people were looking for information; it is not a count of players affected by the outage.
Which Steam services were affected?
Steam is not one indivisible service. The Store, account authentication, Community, Web API, game coordinators, matchmaking and game servers can fail independently. During this incident, the reported impact varied by service, region, device and account.
| Component | Reported impact |
|---|---|
| Steam Store | Many users saw an unavailable page, loading failure or an error while trying to browse or purchase games. |
| Steam Community | Forums, profiles, groups and Workshop pages were affected, with some remaining unreliable after the Store had returned. |
| Steam Web API | Reported offline or unavailable, potentially affecting connected tools and services. |
| Steam mobile apps | Some users reported sign-in and loading problems. |
| Valve game APIs | Services for games including Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 were reported degraded or unavailable. |
| Installed single-player games | Some continued to launch and play, particularly when they did not require live Steam authentication or another online service. |
| Multiplayer games | Availability depended on Steam authentication, matchmaking, a game coordinator and the game’s own servers. Some multiplayer games could fail even when the game itself was installed correctly. |
What errors did users see?
Reported symptoms included:
- A black or empty Steam client window.
- Store pages that would not load.
An error occurred while processing your request.
Bad Gateway
and E502-style errors.- WebSocket and connection-manager errors.
- Mobile sign-in failures.
- Unavailable Community, profile, forum and Workshop pages.
- Valve games failing to connect to matchmaking or game-coordinator services.
Some users also reported pages mentioning edgesuite.net and Reference #18
errors. Those observations may be consistent with a CDN or origin-routing problem, but they do not prove that Akamai was the cause. A CDN hostname or an error-page screenshot cannot establish whether the fault was at the CDN, Valve’s origin systems or the connection between them.
Was Steam completely down?
No. Steam was widely disrupted, but it was not uniformly unavailable to every user or for every function.
Rank #2
- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. - Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
One person might have seen a blank Store page and been unable to sign in on mobile, while another could open the Library and launch an installed offline-capable game. A third user might have been able to browse the Store but not access Community features or Counter-Strike 2 matchmaking. These differences are normal during a partial platform outage.
The most important distinction is between an installed game and the services needed to authenticate or connect it:
- Offline-capable single-player games: May continue to work if Steam Offline Mode and the game were prepared in advance.
- Games requiring Steam authentication: May refuse to launch until Steam can verify the account.
- Games using an external launcher: May require the publisher’s launcher or account even if Steam is working.
- Steam matchmaking and game-coordinator titles: Can fail when Steam’s online game services are degraded.
- Games with independent servers: May be affected by their own server outage rather than by Steam.
What caused the Christmas Eve outage?
The public record reviewed for this incident does not establish a confirmed root cause. Valve did not publicly explain the disruption in the contemporaneous reports, and the available coverage does not provide a verified incident report from Valve or Akamai.
Several explanations circulated:
- Unusually high Christmas traffic combined with demand from the Winter Sale.
- A failure involving Steam’s content-delivery network or CDN routing.
- A backend or origin-server failure.
- A cyberattack or distributed denial-of-service attack.
Heavy holiday traffic is plausible, but plausibility is not confirmation. Likewise, reports involving Akamai-related error pages do not prove an Akamai failure. Claims about AWS, a DDoS attack or any other specific infrastructure fault should be treated as speculation unless Valve or the relevant provider confirms them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to tell whether Steam is down globally or only for you
Before changing files, reinstalling the client or repeatedly attempting a purchase, check whether the problem is platform-wide.
- Check multiple Steam services. Try the Store, Community and Library separately. A Store failure with a working Library may indicate a partial outage rather than a problem with the entire client.
- Check SteamStat.us. It monitors services such as the Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers and selected Valve game APIs.
- Check DownDetector. A sharp increase in reports from many regions is evidence of a broader incident, although the reports are user submissions rather than confirmed outage counts.
- Try the browser and the Steam client. If both fail in the same way, a client-only problem becomes less likely.
- Test another device or network. A phone hotspot can help distinguish a home-network or ISP problem from a Steam-side problem.
- Ask whether friends in other regions are affected. Similar failures across different networks and countries point toward a platform or service outage.
SteamStat.us is an unofficial SteamDB-affiliated monitor, not an official Valve status page. Its documentation and source repository make that limitation clear. No third-party dashboard proves that every Steam feature is healthy, and a status page can lag behind user reports or monitor only selected components.
Global outage or local problem?
| What you observe | More likely explanation | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Store, Community, API and mobile access fail together | Platform-wide outage | Monitor status and wait; avoid drastic repairs. |
| Only one computer is affected | Local client, firewall, cache or network problem | Restart Steam, test another network and review firewall access. |
| Store works but Community does not | Partial Steam outage | Treat it as a service-specific failure; do not reinstall Steam. |
| Library works but an online game fails | Authentication, matchmaking, game-coordinator or game-server problem | Check the game’s own status and the relevant Steam service. |
| Store works but downloads are slow | Content-server or regional routing issue | Try a nearby download region. |
| A payment may have completed but the game is missing | Transaction or account-library delay | Check purchase history before trying to buy again. |
| Steam asks for a login while the service is unavailable | Offline Mode was not fully prepared | Wait for recovery; there is no guaranteed bypass for a required login. |
What to do if Steam is still not working
1. Do not reinstall Steam first
Reinstalling the Steam client cannot repair a server-side outage. It can also create unnecessary risk if you have not verified game-file locations, account credentials or cloud-save status. Establish that the failure is local before considering a reinstall.
2. Restart Steam after checking the service status
Exit Steam completely, reopen it and try again. Valve’s guidance for servers unavailable or too busy errors recommends restarting Steam. A restart can clear a stale connection, but it will not fix a continuing platform-wide outage.

- 🔌【Incredible Durable】 Double braided nylon exterior make Cat8 Ethernet Cable more durable, flexible and tangle-free. And this sturdy cat 8 patch cord can be bended at least 10 thousands times, so that you can reuse it without any concerns.
3. Test the network
- Restart the router.
- Try a wired connection if one is available.
- Test a phone hotspot or another network.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy.
- Check whether ordinary websites and other online services work.
Valve’s Steam network troubleshooting guidance also covers direct wired connections, firewall settings and interfering background applications.
4. Check firewall permissions
A Steam client update can cause a firewall to retain stale permissions. Valve lists these executables when troubleshooting Steam firewall access:
steaminstall.exesteam.exehl.exehl2.exesteamTmp.exe
Close Steam, remove the old Steam-related firewall permissions, restart the client and allow the listed programs when prompted. Do not leave the firewall disabled as a workaround. Follow Valve’s official firewall procedure.
5. Change the download region only for download problems
On Windows, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region, choose a nearby alternative and retry the download. Valve documents this as a connection and download troubleshooting step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing the download region is not a reliable fix for a Store, Community, account-authentication or Steam-wide outage. It is most appropriate when browsing works but downloads are slow, stuck or failing. See Valve’s download-region guidance and its server troubleshooting page.
6. Clear the download cache only when the symptoms justify it
Use Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache for an appropriate local download or launch problem. Valve says this does not remove installed games, but it does require you to log in again. That makes it a poor first step during an authentication outage or when Offline Mode is your only way to launch a game.
Use the official cache instructions after confirming that Steam’s services are generally healthy.
7. Try -tcp only as an advanced local-network test
Valve documents the -tcp launch option, which starts Steam using TCP rather than UDP. It can help identify a local routing or connection-manager problem, but it cannot repair a Steam server outage.

On Windows:
- Locate
steam.exe, normally underC:Program Files (x86)Steam. - Create a shortcut to the executable.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties.
- In Target, add
-tcpafter the quoted executable path. - Launch Steam through that shortcut.
"C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteam.exe" -tcp
More details are available in Valve’s Steam TCP launch-option instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you play Steam games during an outage?
Sometimes, but Offline Mode has to be prepared before the connection disappears. It is not an emergency switch that can reliably be enabled for the first time after Steam has gone offline.
Valve’s official Offline Mode documentation says users should:
- Start Steam while online.
- Check Remember me at login.
- Allow the game to finish updating.
- Launch the game once while online.
- Confirm there are no pending updates or installations.
- Check that Steam > Settings > Security > Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline before losing connectivity.
Games that require an active connection or an external launcher will not work in Offline Mode. Online multiplayer, Steam matchmaking, friends, profiles, Workshop content, cloud saves and some achievement functions also require connectivity. A game that is installed is therefore not automatically a game that can be played during a Steam outage.
Recommended Free Tools
The same general limitations matter on Steam Deck, although the exact behavior can vary with the client state, the game and any external launcher it uses. Do not assume that every Deck-installed title will launch offline; test important games in Offline Mode before relying on them during travel or an outage.
What happened to purchases, gift cards and the Winter Sale?
The outage occurred while the Winter Sale was active, but the official sale window continued through January 5, 2026. That meant users did not need to repeatedly attempt a purchase or panic-buy while the Store was failing.
If a payment appeared to fail:
- Wait for Steam services to recover.
- Check your account’s purchase history.
- Check whether the game has appeared in your Library.
- Do not immediately submit the same order repeatedly.
- Log out and back in if a recent purchase is not visible after recovery.
- Contact Steam Support if your payment was charged but the purchase or game remains missing.
Valve’s guidance for servers unavailable or too busy errors specifically recommends logging out and back in to determine whether a recent purchase was processed. Checking the transaction record before trying again is the safest way to avoid duplicate purchases.
How should the outage be described today?
The accurate description is a widespread, partial Steam outage on December 24, 2025. It is not accurate to say that every Steam user was locked out, that every game stopped working or that the outage was caused by a confirmed Akamai failure, AWS failure or cyberattack.

It is also important to separate Store recovery from complete platform recovery. The Store came back during the afternoon, while reports of Community, Workshop, forum and login problems continued into Christmas Day. Different checks found different services healthy at different times.
For a future December 24, do not reuse this incident as evidence that Steam is experiencing another outage. December 24, 2026 was still in the future as of the August 10, 2026 research date. A new live-status report would need fresh evidence from Steam, an outage monitor and current user reports.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Steam down right now?
The Christmas Eve incident discussed here occurred on December 24, 2025 and was resolved. As of August 10, 2026, SteamStat.us listed the Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers and tracked Valve game APIs as normal. Because SteamStat.us is unofficial and status can change, check SteamStat.us and current user reports for a live answer.
Was the Christmas Eve outage a hack or DDoS attack?
There is no confirmed public evidence in the reviewed coverage establishing a hack or DDoS attack. Holiday traffic, CDN problems, backend failures and cyberattacks were all discussed as possibilities, but Valve did not publicly confirm the root cause.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I play a single-player Steam game during an outage?
Possibly. The game must support offline play, be fully updated, have been launched once while online and have Steam Offline Mode prepared in advance. Games requiring live authentication or an external launcher may not start.
Why did my Steam Library work while the Store was down?
Steam’s Store, Library, Community, authentication and game services are separate components. A partial outage can affect Store or Community requests while the local Library remains available and an already-installed offline-capable game continues to launch.
Does the outage affect Steam Deck?
A Steam Deck may still run an installed offline-capable game if Offline Mode and the game were prepared beforehand. Results vary by game, client state and external-launcher requirements, so no blanket guarantee applies to every Deck title.
Should I reinstall Steam if the Store will not load?
No—not while multiple users or Steam services are failing. Reinstalling cannot fix a server-side outage and may create additional account, installation or save-management complications. First compare SteamStat.us, DownDetector, another device and another network.

Was the Steam Winter Sale extended because of the outage?
The official Winter Sale was scheduled to run from December 18, 2025, through January 5, 2026. The available research does not establish an automatic extension, so users should not assume that an outage changes the published sale end date.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Steam was widely but not completely down on December 24, 2025. The Store recovered first, while Community, Workshop, API, authentication and Valve game services recovered unevenly. There was no confirmed public cause. If a similar failure occurs, check service status before troubleshooting, avoid duplicate purchases and do not expect Offline Mode to work unless it was configured while Steam was online.
