Steam Workshop is the more integrated option for installing and receiving updates to WARHAMMER III mods; Nexus Mods gives you more direct control over downloading and installing files. Neither route guarantees that a mod is compatible with the current game patch, other mods, or an existing campaign. Steam’s “Verify Integrity of Game Files” checks the base-game installation—not whether a mod is current or working correctly.
How Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods handle updates
Steam Workshop: subscriptions and client-side updates
WARHAMMER III’s Steam Workshop lets you browse categories, check required DLC information, and filter by “Last Updated.” For games using Steamworks’ Ready-to-Use Workshop integration, Steam says Workshop content is downloaded through the client and the client is kept up to date with mod updates. That is platform-level guidance, not a guarantee of exact update timing or compatibility for every WARHAMMER III mod. Steamworks’ Workshop documentation describes that integration.
Workshop listings also include a “Most Required by Other Items” area, which can help surface dependencies. A listing or subscription does not establish that a mod works with every other item in your load order or with a particular save.
Nexus Mods: download and manage files deliberately
Nexus presents WARHAMMER III mods as files on individual mod pages. You can install them manually or use a manager: the TW Mod Manager listing describes WARHAMMER III support, Nexus downloads, manual installation, dependency and conflict views, profiles, and a way to check Workshop updates. Its listing does not establish universal automatic updating for Nexus files. Check the specific mod page and manager status for version information.

Before installing or updating from either source, review the mod’s latest file, game-version notes, required DLC, dependencies, and author guidance. The Workshop’s update filter helps you find recently updated items, but recency alone is not proof of compatibility.
What Steam’s “Verify Integrity of Game Files” actually checks
Steam’s verification feature is a troubleshooting step for the base-game installation. SEGA’s mod-removal and verification instructions recommend removing mods and then verifying game files when diagnosing installation problems. They do not describe the process as checking mod updates, compatibility, or safety.

So, if Steam reports that the game files are verified, that result is not a verdict on your Workshop or Nexus mods. It does not show that a mod supports the latest patch, is conflict-free, or is safe to use with a campaign save.

Steam Workshop is the straightforward choice if you want the game’s integrated subscription workflow. Nexus suits players who prefer to handle downloads and installation more deliberately. A manager is optional; consider one when its listed features address a real need in your setup. TW Mod Manager’s listing specifies Windows 10, Steam, and 7-Zip for local installation. How to troubleshoot a mod-related problem
- Check the mod first. Review its page for the latest file, supported game version, required DLC, dependencies, and author notes. Check whether another installed mod could conflict.
- Disable or remove mods to isolate the issue. SEGA’s support guide explains how to locate active mods in the Total War launcher, deactivate or delete them, and unsubscribe through Steam. It also identifies possible mod directories. See SEGA’s instructions.
- Verify the base game through Steam if installation trouble remains. Use this as a game-installation check, not as a mod update or compatibility check. Follow SEGA’s guidance to verify after removing mods. SEGA Support
- Keep the campaign in mind. SEGA warns that an ongoing campaign may depend on its mods; removing them can mean starting a new campaign. If the issue appears mod-specific, SEGA advises referring it to the mod developer or reverting to a previous game build where possible. SEGA Support
Keeping a campaign’s mod setup manageable
For a large or mixed mod list, record the versions and load order you use for a campaign. That gives you a reference if an update changes behavior or you need to troubleshoot. The Workshop and third-party managers provide useful update or organization features, but neither promises to preserve a compatible setup automatically.
