SteamOS is usually the better choice if you want to play games from your Steam library on a handheld; Android is usually better if the games you want are native Android titles. Neither platform is a universal winner. Check compatibility and controller support for the specific games—and the exact device—you plan to use.
Choose by the games you want to play
Start with your library, not a broad claim about speed. A SteamOS handheld is a portable gaming PC built around Steam and PC games. Android handhelds run Android games and apps, with game and controller behavior varying by title and device.
| What matters to you | SteamOS handheld | Android handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Your existing library | Best aligned with games you own on Steam, subject to each game’s compatibility. | Best aligned with native Android games and apps; verify support for each title. |
| Compatibility information | Valve’s Deck Verified ratings indicate how comfortably a game works on Steam Deck. Ratings and compatibility information can change as games and software are updated. | Google documents controller support for developers, but support depends on how each game is built and tested. |
| Controls | Steam Deck has integrated gamepad controls. | Android supports a range of controllers, but a game may not support them—or may require touch for menus or onboarding. |
| Device range | Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3. Valve announced official SteamOS compatibility for Lenovo Legion Go S on May 12, 2025; check Valve’s current documentation for device-specific support. | Android is used across phones, tablets, TVs, and other form factors. Game availability and fit vary across them. |
| Storage | Valve says Steam Deck models support microSD storage expansion. | Storage specifications depend on the particular handheld; compare the model you are considering. |
| Performance and price | No matched current benchmark or comparable price evidence establishes a general winner. | Performance and price vary by model, chipset, game, and settings; there is no established general winner. |
When SteamOS is the better fit
You want to play games from Steam
SteamOS is the more direct fit if your priority is your existing Steam library. Steam Deck OLED is a portable gaming PC running SteamOS 3, with integrated gamepad controls. Valve’s product details are available on the Steam Deck OLED specifications page.
You want a compatibility signal before installing
Valve’s Deck Verified program rates how well games work on Steam Deck, considering factors such as display resolution, default settings, and text legibility. Treat a rating as useful guidance, not an unconditional promise: Valve says the review process continues as games and updates arrive.

For games that need compatibility help, Steam Support explains Proton and compatibility settings in its Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide. Some games may require per-game adjustments, and not every PC game should be assumed to work. The guidance notes that much of its information may apply to third-party AMD devices compatible with SteamOS; for other devices, it advises contacting the manufacturer for detailed support. Valve also documents compatibility review across Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and third-party SteamOS gaming devices in its Steamworks compatibility review documentation.
You value handheld-focused features and expandable storage
Valve describes a quick suspend-and-resume feature for SteamOS on its Steam Deck product page. Steam Deck models also support microSD expansion, which may be useful if you need more space for installed games; check the device specifications and card compatibility before buying.

When Android is the better fit
Your priority is native Android games
Android is the natural choice when the games you want are Android titles. Its range of device types can also suit people who want to use Android across more than one kind of screen. That range does not guarantee that every game is available or works equally well on every device. Google’s guidance covers both natural input across form factors and making games compatible with different form factors.
You have checked controller support in the actual game
Google says Android has supported a wide array of game controllers since API level 9 (Android 2.3 Gingerbread). That platform capability does not mean every game offers console-style controls: individual developers implement and test controller behavior. Before choosing an Android handheld for a particular game, look for explicit gamepad support and check whether the menus and tutorial work without touch. Google’s controller support guidance and controller testing guidance explain the developer side of that support.

How to compare two specific handhelds
- List the games you actually play. Mark which are Steam/PC games and which are Android titles; do not decide from platform labels alone.
- Check each title on the exact platform. For Steam Deck, consult Deck Verified and look for compatibility notes. For Android, confirm availability on the device and explicit gamepad support.
- Test the whole control flow. Check gameplay, menus, tutorials, and any setup screens, especially for Android games that may assume touch input.
- Compare the device, not just the operating system. Consider ergonomics, display, storage, battery/runtime needs, and price for the exact models. Current matched benchmark evidence is not established here, so a performance verdict needs model- and game-specific evidence.
- Confirm ongoing support. For third-party SteamOS hardware, check current device support information and the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming the Steam Deck experience transfers unchanged.
Recommendation
Choose SteamOS if your library is mostly Steam/PC games and you value Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility information. Choose Android if your priority is native Android games and you have confirmed that your chosen titles work well with a controller on the device you want. If both libraries matter, let your must-play games decide, then compare the particular handhelds on controls, comfort, screen, storage, runtime, and price. These recommendations follow the platforms’ documented capabilities; they are not based on matched hands-on testing.
