Steam’s restriction on crypto and NFT games is real, but it is not a new 2026 ban. Valve added it to Steamworks publishing guidance in October 2021, and its Steam Direct page still lists applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs among content that should not be published. That wording is narrower than a ban on every game that uses blockchain: how Valve classifies a particular design is not fully documented.
What Steam’s rule actually prohibits
Valve’s Steam Direct guidance lists as item 13: “Applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs.” The official Steam Direct guidance is the clearest statement of the rule.

The operative details matter. The rule concerns applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrency or NFTs. A game that creates or distributes a token, lets players trade or convert cryptocurrency, or mints, sells, distributes, or enables trading of NFTs fits the conduct the text names. “Play-to-earn” is not the wording Valve uses; it becomes relevant when the rewards are tradable cryptocurrency or NFTs.
The text does not expressly say that every use of blockchain is prohibited. A blockchain used only for provenance, identity, or non-tradable records may be different from a game that issues or exchanges assets, but the wording alone is not a guarantee of approval. Valve’s public guidance does not spell out a definitive boundary for these cases.

When the policy appeared
The restriction surfaced through developer-facing guidance and reports from affected developers, rather than a prominent public policy announcement. Contemporary coverage described the change in October 2021; “quietly” describes how it emerged, not evidence that Valve deliberately concealed it.
- September 30, 2021: Light Nite’s developer said Steam had removed the game. The play-to-earn shooter rewarded players with small amounts of Bitcoin, according to GeekWire’s account.
- October 14–15, 2021: Age of Rust’s developer publicly discussed Steam’s position on blockchain games. Game Developer reported that Valve had informed developers and added the restriction to its guidance.
- October 16–18, 2021: GeekWire and then Axios covered the policy and its implications. Axios also contrasted Valve’s policy with Epic Games Store’s position at the time.
The rule remains on Valve’s Steam Direct page, which was reviewed on August 18, 2026. That current listing does not make the policy a new development; it shows that the restriction is still present in the published guidance.

What happened to the games caught up in the change
Age of Rust
Age of Rust was a puzzle-adventure game whose design included blockchain assets and cryptocurrency-linked rewards. Its developer chose not to remove those features because they were central to the game’s identity. Contemporary reports described the game as removed or rejected from Steam; they do not establish its present status. GeekWire and Game Developer covered the dispute.
Light Nite and other titles
Light Nite’s reported Bitcoin rewards made its play-to-earn model directly relevant to the rule. Other blockchain-related titles, including Mir4 and Project Genesis, were still visible on Steam in some contemporary reporting. Their presence at that time does not prove Valve had granted an exception or that every game was reviewed and treated identically; enforcement and classification were not necessarily instantaneous.

What Valve has—and has not—explained
Valve did not provide a detailed public rationale in the contemporary reporting. The rule itself states what content should not be published, not why Valve adopted that standard. GeekWire and Game Developer described the restriction appearing without a fuller public explanation.
Fraud, regulatory uncertainty, consumer protection, and the burden of moderating assets traded beyond Steam are plausible context, not confirmed reasons from Valve. Game Developer linked the discussion to Valve’s earlier changes to Counter-Strike key trading: in 2019, Valve said it believed nearly all traded or resold key purchases were fraud-sourced. That history may help explain why real-world-value trading raised concerns for the company, but it does not establish the official reason for the crypto and NFT rule.

Why Steam’s own item market is not the same thing
Steam operates the Community Market for certain conventional in-game items, some of which can have monetary value within Steam’s ecosystem. That can make the crypto restriction look inconsistent at first glance, but the systems are not equivalent. Steam’s marketplace is controlled by Valve and confined to its platform rules; blockchain assets may move through external wallets, marketplaces, or exchanges, creating ownership and financial exposure outside Steam’s direct control.
The comparison raises a real policy tension, but it does not prove legal inconsistency or mean that Steam’s marketplace is an external crypto exchange. Custody, transferability, settlement, and Valve’s ability to moderate transactions differ.

How developers should assess a Steam release
For a studio deciding whether a blockchain-enabled game can ship on Steam, the key issue is the product’s actual functions, not its marketing label. The public wording leaves important cases unresolved, so a design that seems outside the rule should not be treated as pre-approved.
- Does the game mint, distribute, or sell a token or NFT?
- Can players buy, sell, trade, or convert those assets through the application?
- Does the game connect to external wallets or direct players to an outside marketplace?
- Are token rewards earned through play, even if the transaction occurs through a separate service?
- Is blockchain central to the game, or an optional back-end feature that can be disabled in the Steam build?
- Can the project support a conventional, platform-controlled item system without undermining its core gameplay?
Ordinary Steam inventory items, skins, or cards are not automatically NFTs just because players value or trade them inside Steam. Conversely, calling an asset something other than an NFT does not establish that it falls outside Valve’s rule. Wallet links, external trading sites, optional blockchain features, and rewards delivered outside the game are all cases where the public guidance does not specify a definitive outcome.
Options if a game’s design conflicts with the rule
- Remove the issuance or exchange functions. A conventional game build without token or NFT mechanics may be a path to Steam, provided the resulting design meets Valve’s requirements.
- Separate the Steam build from the blockchain product. A conventional Steam edition alongside blockchain functions elsewhere may be possible, but merely moving an exchange to a website does not guarantee that Valve will accept an application that promotes or facilitates it.
- Ask Valve for a written determination. The public rule does not resolve every edge case. A project-specific answer is more useful than assuming wallet support or an external marketplace is permitted.
- Choose another distribution route. Developers can consider another PC storefront, a launcher, or direct distribution, after checking the relevant platform’s current requirements.
- Reconsider the asset model. Replacing transferable tokens with non-transferable, platform-controlled items can preserve some collection or progression features, but may change the game’s central promise.
Alternative distribution also transfers work to the developer: storefront discovery, payment processing, refunds, fraud prevention, age-rating obligations, and customer support all need to be handled through the chosen channel.
What the Epic comparison does—and does not—show
In October 2021, Epic Games Store said it was open to blockchain-based games, subject to applicable laws, disclosures, and age-rating requirements, as Axios reported at the time. That is a dated comparison, not a guarantee of Epic’s current policy or of acceptance by any storefront. Developers should check the platform’s present rules before committing to a release plan.

Valve’s published rule does not explain how it treats non-tradable blockchain records, wallet connections, optional blockchain features, external exchanges linked from a game, or tokens delivered through an outside service. The cited sources also do not establish a general grandfathering rule or describe a specific review or appeal process for these cases. As a result, the official wording is useful for identifying obvious conflicts, but it does not settle every borderline design.
