Steam’s helpfulness system changes which user reviews appear first on a game’s store page; it does not directly change the game’s positive or negative review score. Introduced as a public test on August 14, 2024, it is intended to give reviews with useful information for prospective buyers more visibility than one-word posts, memes, ASCII art and in-jokes. You can compare the new ordering with the previous system using a control in the Customer reviews section.
What changed in Steam review ordering?
Before the update, reviews that attracted helpful votes and other engagement could dominate the most visible parts of a store page, including when they were jokes or short reactions. The new system adds an attempt to identify reviews that are more informative to someone deciding whether to buy the game. Valve says the aim is to reduce the prominence of entertaining posts that offer little purchase-relevant detail, not to remove them. Steam’s announcement

This is a visibility and ranking change, not a new rating scale. A review’s blue thumbs-up or red thumbs-down recommendation is separate from whether Steam considers its text informative.

Steam’s examples include one-word reviews, posts mainly made up of ASCII art, playful memes and in-jokes. These can be fun for existing players without telling a prospective buyer much about the game. The system may place them behind more informative reviews, but a short or humorous review is not automatically hidden, and length alone is not a stated ranking rule.

Reviews ranked lower by this system remain available. Removal or reduced visibility for rule violations is a separate moderation matter.
How does Steam decide what is informative?
Valve describes a combination of user reports, human moderation and machine-learning algorithms. It has said the system began by targeting forms of unhelpful content that are relatively easy to identify. Helpful and unhelpful votes still matter, but Steam has not published the model architecture, thresholds, weighting or complete store-page ranking formula. Valve’s explanation of the system

Steam’s public review API exposes fields such as votes_up, votes_funny and weighted_vote_score. Those fields provide review and vote data; they do not disclose the full new ranking logic, and the weighted vote score should not be treated as a direct equivalent of the complete store-page ordering. Does it change a game’s rating or hide negative reviews?
No: Valve says this update changes display order, not how Steam generates review scores. Recommendation polarity is not used to judge whether the review text is informative, so a detailed negative review can rank prominently and a positive meme review may not. Steam’s announcement

Steam displays lifetime and recent review scores; the recent score covers the past 30 days, while the lifetime score covers the product’s review history. Only qualifying Steam purchases count toward the score, although reviews from users with keys, free access or Family Library access may still be readable. These score rules are distinct from the helpfulness ranking. Steamworks review documentation
A separate change announced August 14, 2025, introduced language-specific scores for qualifying games with more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews in a language. That can change the score shown to some users; it is not part of the helpfulness ordering. Steam says users can switch back to the overall score in Store preferences. How to turn off the new helpfulness system
- Open the game’s Steam store page and scroll to Customer reviews.
- Open the review display controls, called Display in Steam’s announcement.
- Unselect Use new helpfulness system to compare the previous ordering.

Which review view should you use?
Current store pages offer Summary, Most Helpful, Recent and Funny. The new-system switch applies to Summary and Most Helpful, rather than Recent or Funny, based on pages inspected in August 2026. Most Helpful should not be assumed to mean a simple sort by raw helpful-vote count while the new system is enabled. Steam store page example

- Summary: Start here for Steam’s purchase-oriented overview.
- Recent: Check this for feedback on the game’s current state after patches.
- Most Helpful: Compare the new ordering with the toggle off; read both positive and negative explanations.
- Funny: Use this when you want community humor rather than a buyer-focused overview.
Where available, refine reviews by language, purchase type, playtime, date range and Steam Deck usage. Check both the review date and playtime: an older launch-era review may document a problem that has since changed, while it can also preserve evidence of a major failure or shift in support. A review’s ranking is a starting point, not proof that its claims are accurate or relevant to your situation.
Helpfulness ranking versus off-topic moderation
The helpfulness system ranks reviews for display; it is not the same as Steam’s off-topic review process. Steam moderators can flag reviews as off-topic when they are uninformative or unrelated to the product, development or community experience. Steam’s store pages also provide an Off-topic Review Activity control. Off-topic reviews may receive reduced visibility while still contributing to a score; reviews removed for rule violations may stop contributing. Steamworks review documentation
The helpfulness update is not, by itself, a review-bomb safeguard because it does not change score calculation. For a suspected review bomb that affects a score, Steam tells developers to contact Partner Support; Valve may identify unrelated activity and exclude it from the overall score. What developers should know
Developers do not choose which reviews Steam ranks first. A review can remain visible while becoming less prominent, and a negative recommendation is not automatically less informative. Steam’s review API can help developers monitor review text, votes, purchase status, timestamps and developer responses, but does not expose the complete store-page ranking algorithm. - Do not offer rewards for positive reviews or solicit reviews inside the game.
- Treat critical feedback as feedback rather than assuming it is abuse.
- Use official responses sparingly and factually; Steam advises against arguing with reviewers or responding to everything.
- Contact Valve Partner Support about suspected review bombing, and track recent sentiment separately from lifetime sentiment.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is to compare views and read the reasons behind recommendations. For developers, the key distinction is that prominence can change without the score itself changing.
