SteamVR’s Chaperone grid normally appears when you approach the boundary set during Room Setup; it is not meant to stay visible throughout play. If it does not appear when expected, check its visibility settings first, then confirm SteamVR devices are ready and work through Room Setup and tracking checks.
First, check when Chaperone should appear
Chaperone is a visual warning for the play area you designated during setup. By default, the boundary appears as you approach it, rather than remaining visible at all times. Steam notes that a quick movement such as a sudden run or lunge can reach the edge before the warning appears. (SteamVR Chaperone FAQ)
- Move toward the configured edge slowly and deliberately to see whether the grid activates.
- While wearing the headset and running VR, press the controller’s System button and open Chaperone settings. Check whether visibility has been customized; Steam says the default setting offers the most visible boundaries.
If you expected a permanent grid, the default behavior may explain why it seemed to be missing. Chaperone is only a boundary indicator: it does not detect furniture, pets, floor or ceiling hazards, or objects overhead. Clear the play area and plan for hazards the grid cannot show; do not rely on it as protection during fast movement.
Check SteamVR device status
Open the SteamVR status or monitor window and check whether the headset, controllers, and any tracking devices show as ready. Valve’s Index setup guide says to make all devices green before following the on-screen Room Setup instructions. A device that is not ready may point to a broader connection or tracking problem rather than a Chaperone-only setting. (Valve Index Setup Guide)

Restart SteamVR and rerun Room Setup
When checking the setting and device status does not restore the expected boundary, follow Steam’s general troubleshooting sequence for SteamVR issues. Menu wording may vary by SteamVR version and headset.
- In Steam, verify the integrity of the SteamVR tool files.
- Check for graphics-driver issues and install an available driver update if needed.
- Restart SteamVR.
- From the SteamVR status window, run Room Setup again and follow its instructions.
- If the issue remains, restart Windows.
Steam also suggests trying Safe Mode if the problem persists. Safe Mode prevents some third-party drivers and components from loading, which can help identify whether a conflict is involved; it does not by itself establish that a third-party component is the cause. (SteamVR Troubleshooting (Index))

If the boundary is misplaced, check floor calibration
If Room Setup completes but the floor position or boundary is wrong, repeat the setup and take care during floor calibration. Steam recommends placing controllers steadily, with their triggers facing upward to reduce wobble. On a reflective floor, put a flat, non-reflective item beneath each controller. Complete any available device firmware updates without interrupting them. (SteamVR floor position troubleshooting)
If your virtual position drifts, investigate tracking
A boundary that shifts along with your virtual position can be a tracking issue, not simply a Chaperone display setting. Steam lists drifting or floating positions, a pulsing green device status, and a gray headset display among tracking clues. Its troubleshooting checks include base-station placement, visibility and synchronization, secure cables, reflective surfaces, and possible environmental interference. - If the grid is absent but tracking and device status appear normal, revisit Chaperone visibility settings and Room Setup.
- If the virtual position drifts, a device status pulses, or the display turns gray, include tracking checks in the diagnosis.
Use the boundary as a warning, not a safety system
Steam cautions that Chaperone may not display a boundary soon enough during sudden fast movement. Keep the play space clear and account for hazards beyond the visible floor area. For Valve Index, the setup guide recommends a room-scale area of at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft); that is Index setup guidance, not a diagnostic threshold for a missing grid.
