Steamworks Common Redistributables is a Steam-managed package of shared runtime installers and support files. Games use components such as Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX 9, .NET, OpenAL, XNA and PhysX when their developers declare those prerequisites. It is not a game, performance booster or normally a background service. Leave it installed unless you are deliberately repairing a Steam or game-launch problem.

What “Steamworks Common Redistributables” means

Valve designed the system so every game does not need to keep and repeatedly install its own copies of common prerequisites. A developer selects the components a title requires in Steamworks, and Steam manages the corresponding installers and shared content. Valve maintains the install scripts and updates them when applicable patches are available. The current categories are listed in Valve’s Steamworks Common Redistributables documentation, so the exact contents can change.

  • Steamworks: Valve’s developer distribution and integration platform.
  • Common: Intended for use by multiple Steam applications rather than duplicated in every game folder.
  • Redistributables: Runtime libraries or frameworks that software can install on a user’s computer.

These are prerequisites, not the game’s artwork, levels or executable. On 64-bit Windows, both 32-bit and 64-bit components may be present because games can target different architectures.

What it can install

Valve’s documented list includes:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes
  • .NET
  • DirectX 9 components
  • OpenAL
  • XNA
  • PhysX

Not every PC receives every item. Steam uses the requirements declared by each application, and a game may also use a custom installer. The list is not a permanent inventory: Valve says the complete, current selection is maintained in the Steamworks App Admin Redistributables tab.

Why it appears as a Steam Library item

Steam exposes the package as a free tool-like application associated with App ID 228980. Steam metadata identifies its shared directory as Steamworks Shared and its launch target as steam://open/tools; see the SteamDB configuration record. That presentation explains the Play button or Library entry some users see, but it does not make the package a conventional game.

Library visibility and context-menu options vary with Steam client version, operating system and user settings. Valve first named shared-installer updates in public client notes on April 17, 2019 (Steam client update).

Where Steam stores it on Windows

When the package is installed in a Windows Steam Library, its content is typically under:

Common-redist installers are generally below:

Use the actual Steam Library location rather than assuming the default system-drive path. SteamDB’s configuration record and longstanding user reports support these names, but Valve’s public documentation does not promise one fixed end-user filesystem map.

Should you delete or uninstall it?

Normally, no. Removing the shared package is unnecessary and can create a later repair job. Typical reported outcomes include:

  • Steam downloads the shared files again.
  • A first-launch prerequisite installer runs again.
  • A game that needs a missing runtime fails to start.
  • Several games are affected because they rely on the same component.

Community reports describe renewed downloads after the folder is removed, although Valve does not publish a user-facing guarantee that every deletion will behave identically (community discussion). Deleting the Steam folder also does not reliably uninstall Visual C++, DirectX or other runtimes already placed in Windows system locations. The Steam directory may contain installers, scripts and package files rather than the complete runtime footprint.

If disk space is the reason

  1. Check the package’s actual size and which Library drive contains it.
  2. Consider whether the installed games that use the components are still needed.
  3. Remove or relocate unused games instead of pruning shared prerequisite files.
  4. If you remove the package during a controlled repair, expect Steam to reacquire files later.

There is no universal size. SteamDB shows separate depots for App 228980, and their contents can change (SteamDB depot list).

Why it may download repeatedly

Some activity is normal when a newly installed game requests a dependency, a first-launch installer has not completed, or Steam validates or updates shared content. Persistent looping is different. Possible causes include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Interrupted or corrupted downloads
  • Insufficient free space
  • Disk-write errors or a failing drive
  • Steam Library permissions problems
  • Files deleted or partially removed
  • A game moved between Library folders
  • Steam’s package state and files on disk becoming inconsistent
  • A title requiring a legacy runtime or another architecture

Do not assume every repeat download is a bug, but an endless cycle warrants troubleshooting.

Repair steps when a game will not launch

  1. Restart Steam completely. Exit the client, confirm it has closed, and open it again.
  2. Finish pending downloads. Allow the shared package and the affected game to complete rather than repeatedly cancelling them.
  3. Check storage and connectivity. Confirm free space on the Library drive, Steam’s online state and any disk-write error shown in Downloads.
  4. Launch the game again. This gives its prerequisite check or first-launch installer another opportunity to run.
  5. Verify the game files. In current clients, open the game’s Properties, then Installed Files, and choose the file-verification command. Labels can change between Steam versions.
  6. Repair only the named dependency. If an error identifies Visual C++, DirectX or another framework, use the vendor’s official installer rather than downloading an arbitrary “all-in-one” pack.
  7. Restart Windows after a failed runtime installation, since locked files can block replacement.
  8. Escalate based on scope. If several unrelated games fail, investigate Steamworks Common Redistributables, Library permissions, disk health and the Steam client installation instead of treating every title as an isolated failure.

Microsoft’s guidance for Visual C++ installation problems recommends Microsoft-hosted downloads, reviewing installer logs and restarting to release locked files (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).

Visual C++ is not one universal package

Steamworks Common Redistributables can involve multiple Visual C++ generations and architectures. Microsoft states that the runtime architecture must match the application: a 32-bit game may need the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows. The current v14 runtime supports applications built with Visual Studio 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2026 toolchains, while older generations such as Visual C++ 2013 and earlier remain separate and may need to coexist. See Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ downloads.

Installing only the newest package therefore does not guarantee that an older game’s requirement is satisfied. Download redistributables from Microsoft or another original vendor, not an unofficial mirror.

What it is not

  • Not the Steamworks SDK: the SDK is a developer package for integrating Steam features.
  • Not Steamworks.NET: Steamworks.NET is a third-party .NET wrapper for developers; its installation documentation discusses files such as Steamworks.NET.dll, steam_api.dll, libsteam_api.so and steam_appid.txt (Steamworks.NET installation).
  • Not Proton or the Steam Linux Runtime: those are separate Linux and compatibility-layer systems.
  • Not a graphics driver or performance optimizer: it supplies compatibility prerequisites.
  • Not automatically malware: a package obtained through Steam in the expected directory is legitimate infrastructure, but a similarly named file elsewhere still deserves normal security checks.

Steam Deck and Linux caveat

Valve’s public common-redist documentation is primarily a Windows-oriented workflow and even describes Windows registry locations for testing. Do not assume that Steam Deck or native Linux handles these files exactly like Windows. Proton may manage Windows dependencies inside compatibility prefixes, while native Linux applications use different runtime arrangements. A Windows fix such as manually running a .exe redistributable installer may be inappropriate for a Linux-native game. Troubleshoot the title’s Proton, runtime or Linux-specific guidance when working on Steam Deck.

Developer configuration and testing

For Steamworks partners, Valve documents this configuration path:

  1. Open the application in Steamworks App Admin.
  2. Open Installation.
  3. Select Redistributables.
  4. Check the components the application requires.
  5. Publish the changes.

Valve recommends a custom install script when a dependency is uncommon or application-specific. For clean-machine testing, its documentation records common-redist state in these Windows registry locations:

32-bit Windows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREValveSteamAppsCommonRedist
64-bit Windows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeValveSteamAppsCommonRedist

Each installed redistributable has a subkey that developers can remove to simulate a partially installed state. These instructions are for developer testing; ordinary users should not edit these registry keys as a routine repair.

When antivirus flags a file

First distinguish a legitimate Steam installer from a modified or misplaced executable. Check the file path and digital signature, and do not run a suspicious file manually. Let Steam reacquire the content through its client, scan with a reputable security product, and contact Steam Support or the security vendor if a false positive is suspected. A filename containing “redistributable” is not, by itself, proof of safety.

Bottom line

Steamworks Common Redistributables is legitimate shared Steam infrastructure for game prerequisites, not a game you need to play or a service that should constantly consume CPU. Keep it installed, allow normal downloads to finish, and repair the specific runtime or Steam Library only when a real launch or download problem appears. Manual deletion can remove Steam’s shared installers without removing Windows runtimes and can lead to renewed downloads or failed launches.
