StepMania is a free, open-source rhythm-game engine for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can play with a keyboard, controller, or dance pad, but the engine is separate from its songs: you will usually add song packs yourself. For the original StepMania experience, start with the official project releases; consider ITGmania for In the Groove-style play or Project OutFox for a broader engine and newer platform builds.
What is StepMania?
StepMania is an independent rhythm-game engine for home and arcade-style play. Notes scroll toward receptors, and you press the matching direction in time with the music using a keyboard, game controller, or dance pad. It is not an official Konami DanceDanceRevolution release, though it uses a familiar dance-game format.
The engine supports songs and charts, themes that change the interface, noteskins that change note appearance, courses that group songs, profiles, and chart editing. These are distinct pieces of content: installing the program does not install a full commercial DDR music library.
Is StepMania still available, and which version should you choose?
Yes. The original project remains available on GitHub. Its version information distinguishes the established 5.0.x stable branch from 5.1 beta releases. A beta is a prerelease, not simply a newer stable version; themes, content, and behavior may differ. Check the release page for the current assets and notes rather than relying on an old download page.

OutFox describes itself as a StepMania-based engine rather than the official continuation of classic StepMania. Its downloads page lists platform builds; check the live page for the current release and supported hardware. For a newer Mac or an ARM device, compare the fork’s stated requirements before downloading classic StepMania.
Is StepMania free?
The StepMania engine is free and open source. The project repository states that its source code is MIT-licensed, with exceptions and separate licenses for bundled components and content. Songs included with a build can have their own terms; the repository identifies included songs as CC-NC-licensed. “Free software” does not mean that every song online is free to redistribute or use.
Obtain custom packs from their creators or legitimate distribution sources. Do not assume that a downloadable pack of commercial DDR or arcade music is authorized just because it is easy to find.
Where to download StepMania safely
- Original StepMania: use the official GitHub Releases page, and select the appropriate installer or archive under that release’s Assets.
- ITGmania: use its official releases and installation documentation.
- Project OutFox: use the project’s official downloads page.
Avoid repacked installers, random “download” portals, and executables hosted on file-sharing pages. Confirm that the release belongs to the project you intended to install and check its operating-system and architecture notes. If you specifically want a Steam distribution of OutFox, verify the current listing at its Steam page; store availability and terms can change.
Operating-system support: what to expect
Windows
Windows builds are available from the original project, but requirements depend on the specific build. Older project documentation lists Windows 7 and notes that some packages may require the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x86 redistributable; it advises 64-bit Windows users to install the x64 redistributable as well. Treat these as legacy, build-specific notes—not a promise that an old package is the best choice for every Windows 10 or 11 computer. Read the release notes for the asset you download.
If the game cannot save settings, a protected install location can be part of the problem. A user-writable folder is often easier for managing settings and songs than Program Files. Running as administrator should not be the default workaround.

macOS
The original project’s older documentation lists Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, but that is not a modern compatibility guarantee. On current macOS, an old build may be blocked, incompatible with the operating system, built for the wrong processor architecture, or dependent on outdated components. Confirm the exact release’s requirements and architecture before installing. If macOS blocks an app, first verify that it came from the official project; security prompts do not establish that an otherwise incompatible legacy binary will work.

Linux
Linux support depends on distribution, architecture, graphics and audio stack, and the build available. The original project documents both obtaining dependencies through a package manager and building with CMake; some release archives have been built for specific environments such as Debian amd64. Check the archive architecture and release notes before assuming it will run on your distribution. If no suitable binary is available, follow the repository’s build instructions rather than copying a dependency command intended for a different distribution. OutFox also lists Linux builds, including selected ARM builds, on its downloads page.
Install the game and get to the first song
- Open the official release page for the engine you chose.
- Choose the asset for your operating system and processor architecture. For classic StepMania, distinguish stable 5.0.x from 5.1 beta.
- Install the package or extract the archive to a folder you can write to. On Windows, a user-writable location can avoid some permissions friction.
- Launch the game and configure display, audio, and input using the options available in that build. Menu wording varies between versions and forks.
- Add a song pack you are entitled to use, then reload songs if the game offers that option, or restart it.
On Windows, check the release notes for runtime prerequisites if the game will not launch. On macOS, check the release’s operating-system and CPU requirements before treating a security warning as the only obstacle. On Linux, check the architecture, executable permissions, and any missing-library message printed when launching from a terminal.
How to add songs
A song package commonly contains audio, chart data (often called a simfile), metadata, and optional artwork. Folder locations depend on engine and version. The documented user-data directories for classic StepMania 5.0 are:
Windows: %APPDATA%StepMania 5
Linux: ~/.stepmania-5.0/
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/StepMania 5/For StepMania 5.1, the release notes identify these instead:

Linux: ~/.stepmania-5.1/
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/StepMania 5.1/These are user-data locations, not a guarantee that every fork uses the same directory name. Within the appropriate content location, the usual organization is a Songs directory, then a pack folder, then individual song folders. Confirm the expected location for your build in its documentation or preferences.
- Download a pack from its creator or a legitimate source and extract it if it is compressed.
- Put each song folder under a pack folder in the engine’s
Songsdirectory. - Check that the chart and audio files are inside the song folder—not hidden an extra level down.
- Reload the song list if that option exists, or restart the game, then look for the songs in the wheel.
For example, a normal nested layout is Songs/CommunityPack/SongName/SongName.sm alongside the song’s audio and any artwork. A frequent mistake is leaving everything inside the downloaded ZIP or adding an extra wrapper level such as Songs/CommunityPack/ExtractedFolder/SongName/SongName.sm. A song that appears but will not play may have missing audio, an unsupported format, or a chart/content compatibility problem.
Play with a keyboard, controller, or dance pad
You do not need a dance pad to try StepMania. A keyboard is free and useful for checking that the game launches and learning the chart format. A controller can work too, though its layout may feel awkward for four directional lanes. A pad gives the intended physical play experience but introduces hardware and input-mode variables.

Before buying a pad, check its four- or five-panel layout, USB compatibility, controller mode (such as DirectInput or XInput), cable length, stability on your floor, durability, replacement-part availability, and support for your operating system. Most importantly, establish that it can register simultaneous opposite directions. The StepMania release notes document controller-handling differences, including a DirectInput issue where arrows treated as a hat may prevent pressing opposite directions together. A computer recognizing a USB device does not prove the game is receiving usable four-direction button events.
Bind and test controls
- Open the options or input settings and choose the player or controller assignment.
- Bind left, down, up, right, start, select, and back to the intended buttons.
- Test each direction, then test left+right and up+down together.
- Save, and try a short, easy chart before moving to difficult play.
If inputs are missing or mapped incorrectly, try another USB port, rebind manually, disconnect other controllers, and switch between the pad’s DirectInput and XInput modes if it supports both. Test the device in the operating system’s controller tools. On Linux, check device access and mapping; on macOS, check relevant app permissions. If opposite-direction inputs fail, the limitation may be the pad, its mode, or the input API—not simply a bad button binding.

If notes consistently feel early or late, the cause may be display, audio, or controller latency rather than a bad chart. Bluetooth audio, television image processing, USB input handling, frame-rate instability, and global offset settings can all affect the feel. There is no universal offset value that works for every setup.

- Start with wired audio and a direct display connection where practical.
- Disable unnecessary television picture processing and confirm the game runs at a stable frame rate.
- Use the engine’s timing or calibration tool if available.
- Play a simple chart, adjust the relevant audio or visual offset in small increments, and test again.
- Repeat calibration if you change the TV, monitor, audio device, or controller.
Adjust the engine’s timing settings rather than editing individual song files to compensate for a system-wide delay. If timing changes between machines, that is expected when their displays, refresh rates, audio paths, controllers, or engines differ.

A theme changes menus and presentation; a noteskin changes how notes look. Courses group charts into sequences, and some forks support additional modes or formats. Install content only in the directory and version expected by the engine. A theme made for StepMania 5.0 may not behave properly in 5.1, ITGmania, or OutFox. Likewise, a missing song banner or audio file can make a pack look incomplete even when its chart loads. Chart validity does not guarantee good synchronization or quality.
Common problems and fixes
The game will not launch
Confirm you downloaded the intended asset for your operating system and processor. On Windows, check the release-specific runtime notes. On macOS, distinguish a blocked app from an old or incompatible binary. On Linux, check architecture, executable permission, and terminal output for missing libraries; use the distribution’s package or the project’s build guide if the archive does not fit your system.
Songs do not appear
Make sure the archive is extracted, the song is in the correct version’s Songs directory, the chart is not buried under an extra folder level, and the selected mode supports its format. Reload songs or restart the game.
The controller is detected but arrows are wrong or missing
Rebind directions, test simultaneous opposite inputs, try another USB port, and switch input modes if possible. Remove other controllers while testing. If the operating system sees the device but StepMania does not receive the expected button events, the device mode or compatibility may be the issue.

Music feels out of sync
Use wired audio for diagnosis, reduce display processing, verify stable performance, and calibrate the engine’s offset in small steps. Recalibrate after changing hardware rather than assuming one setting suits all setups.
The game cannot save settings
Check whether its installation folder is writable and whether it created the expected user-data folder. Moving it to a user-writable location is a better first test than permanently running as administrator.
