For more responsive smart-TV gaming, start with Game Mode, the correct HDMI input, and the console’s own output settings. If you have a compatible TV and console, enable 120-Hz output, VRR, and ALLM; for cloud gaming, prioritize a stable network. These free setup checks often matter more than buying new gear.
What causes gaming lag on a smart TV?
“Lag” can come from several places, and the fix depends on which one is responsible:
- Display input lag: Delay as the TV processes a signal before showing it. Game Mode reduces this TV-side processing delay.
- Game or console latency: Time spent rendering the game or handling its logic. A TV setting cannot fix poor frame pacing or a slow game engine.
- Controller latency: Delay in the controller connection, potentially affected by interference, distance, or a low battery.
- Network latency: Delay between your device and a game server. It matters in online play and is especially important for cloud gaming.
Input lag is not the same as pixel response time: the first concerns when the picture reacts to an input; the second concerns how quickly pixels change. A low-lag TV helps with the display portion, but cannot compensate for a distant server, unstable connection, or controller problem. LG explains input lag and VRR in its gaming TV guide.

Do not infer that a TV supports every gaming feature from a “HDMI 2.1,” “120 Hz,” or “gaming TV” label. Check the specifications for your exact model and HDMI port. A “120 motion rate” marketing label may describe motion processing rather than a native 120-Hz panel. Native panel refresh rate, the signal’s refresh rate, and the game’s frame rate are different things: a 120-Hz input does not make a 60-FPS game render at 120 FPS.

Turn on Game Mode first
Game Mode usually reduces processing such as motion interpolation, noise reduction, extra sharpening, or AI picture effects. That can make the image look less processed, but it is generally the best baseline for responsive play. Some TVs bypass certain processing automatically; effects vary by model and picture mode.
LG
- Connect the console by HDMI and select that HDMI input.
- Set the picture mode to Game Optimizer.
- Open Game Optimizer to manage available gaming options, including ALLM; enable Game Dashboard if your model offers it.
LG notes that the console must be connected and its input selected for Game Optimizer and Game Dashboard to operate properly. ALLM can restrict picture adjustments while active. See LG’s setup instructions.
Samsung
- Connect the console to HDMI.
- Open the TV’s gaming or external-device settings and enable Game Mode, or confirm that automatic Game Mode has activated.
- If available, use Game Bar to inspect information such as FPS, HDR, VRR, and input-lag status.
Compatible devices can trigger automatic Game Mode, but availability depends on the TV model. See Samsung’s Game Mode instructions.

Sony BRAVIA
- Connect the console to an appropriate HDMI input.
- In HDMI signal-format settings, select the enhanced or VRR-capable format if applicable to your model and port.
- Confirm that the picture mode is Game.
Sony warns that the correct input and TV-side signal setting may be needed to use HDMI 2.1 features. Its BRAVIA support page gives model-specific guidance. Menu names vary by model, region, and firmware; consult your TV manual if these paths differ.
Set up ALLM, VRR, and 120-Hz output
ALLM: automatic low-latency switching
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is a signal from a compatible game source that asks the TV to switch to a low-latency mode. It is a convenience, not a substitute for Game Mode, and both devices and the HDMI connection must support it. Picture adjustments may be restricted while it is active. Some media apps do not send the same signal as a game.
On PS5, go to Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → ALLM. Sony says the latest PS5 system software is required for ALLM support, and the console does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. PS5 VRR can also trigger low-latency behavior, so turning ALLM off completely may require turning VRR off too. See Sony’s PS5 video-output guide.

VRR: smoother timing when frame rates fluctuate
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the game’s changing frame rate. It can reduce tearing and make inconsistent frame pacing less distracting, but it does not increase a game’s frame rate. TVs have operating limits, and VRR may be unavailable with certain input ports, picture modes, resolutions, or HDR formats. Some displays also show brightness or gamma shifts, particularly in dark scenes. LG describes the feature in its gaming guide.
For PC gaming, check whether your TV and graphics setup support a compatible mode such as FreeSync or G-Sync Compatible, and enable it in the TV and PC settings where required.
120 Hz: confirm the actual signal and game
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can support 4K/120-Hz output in compatible hardware and game configurations. Not every title runs at 120 FPS; some offer a performance mode, while others run at 30 or 60 FPS. Nintendo Switch models generally target lower output rates, so a 120-Hz TV does not automatically make Switch games faster. A capable PC may use refresh rates above 120 Hz, depending on the TV, GPU, game, resolution, and connection.
Check the TV’s native panel refresh rate and the console’s reported output rather than trusting motion-smoothing terminology. Sony’s PS5 guide confirms 4K/120-Hz support and lists setup requirements.
Get the HDMI connection right
Only some ports on a TV may support 4K/120, VRR, or the required bandwidth. One of them may also be the eARC port used by a soundbar. Check the TV manual for the capabilities of each input, and look for a required enhanced-signal option such as “Enhanced,” “Input Signal Plus,” or a model-specific equivalent.

- Connect the console directly to the TV while setting up or troubleshooting.
- Use the cable included with the console or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Use the specific TV port labeled for 4K/120, HDMI 2.1, or the relevant feature.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI signal format for that input.
- Update TV and console firmware.
- Set console output to Automatic or the appropriate supported resolution and refresh rate.
- Once the direct connection works, reconnect an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or capture device and verify that it passes the same features.
Sony recommends the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, the correct HDMI 2.1 port, current TV firmware, and direct connection when troubleshooting 4K/120. A more expensive cable does not make a TV process the picture faster; the point is a cable that reliably supports the needed signal.

Use the right settings for your device
PS5
Open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output and check resolution, 120-Hz Output, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and Video Transfer Rate. Use Automatic or the supported setting for your display; for 4K, check that the output is Automatic or 2160p. Run the HDR adjustment after enabling HDR on the TV. PS5’s 1440p test can check SDR/HDR, 60/120 Hz, and VRR support. If 4K/120 produces flicker or a blank image, Sony suggests testing Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2.
Xbox Series X|S
In the console’s TV and display options, verify 4K UHD and 120 Hz where supported, along with Allow 4K, Allow HDR10, Allow variable refresh rate, and Auto low-latency mode when available. Xbox interface labels can change with updates, so use the current console menus and TV details screen to confirm what the devices report.
Nintendo Switch
Use the correct HDMI input and Game Mode, and turn off motion interpolation. A neutral game preset with restrained sharpening can help if the image looks blurry or artificially outlined. For Switch, low TV processing is useful; a 120-Hz panel or HDMI 2.1 connection is not a general requirement.

Confirm the TV’s supported resolution and refresh rate for the specific input, then select that mode in your operating system or graphics settings. Enable a compatible VRR mode on both the TV and PC if supported. A high-refresh TV alone cannot guarantee higher frame rates: the GPU, game, resolution, cable path, and settings all matter.
Keep picture processing from adding delay
With Game Mode active, test other processing controls off if you still notice delay or artifacts. Depending on the TV, these may include TruMotion, Auto Motion Plus, MotionFlow, cinematic motion, noise reduction, MPEG noise reduction, edge enhancement, super-resolution, AI picture processing, dynamic picture modes, or automatic brightness and contrast. Game Mode may already disable some of them.
Do not assume every enhancement adds measurable delay on every model. Motion smoothing can make movement look more fluid, but it may add latency or visual artifacts; sharpening can create halos. Keep HDR, VRR, ALLM, Game Mode, and correctly matched black-level and color-range settings as appropriate. Use Automatic color range unless troubleshooting a mismatch.

Calibrate HDR without washing out the image
Enable HDR for the correct TV input, select the TV’s HDR Game picture mode if available, then run the console’s HDR calibration. Avoid blindly raising brightness or contrast: too much can crush shadow detail, clip highlights, or make the image look gray. If HDR looks dim, washed out, or overexposed, compare the console’s HDR output with HDR disabled and check the TV input’s signal-format setting.
HGiG, where available, is an HDR gaming approach intended to preserve creator-directed tone mapping. It can be worth testing with compatible games, but it is not a universal best setting. LG describes HGiG and gaming HDR in its gaming TV guide.
Make cloud gaming more responsive
Local console play sends controller input to hardware in the room and returns a video signal over HDMI. Cloud gaming sends input across the internet and streams compressed video back, so network quality and service conditions become part of the control loop. A high-refresh screen cannot fix jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, or a distant server.
- Prefer Ethernet from the TV or streaming device to the router.
- If using Wi-Fi, choose 5 GHz or a newer supported band with a strong signal.
- Place the router near the TV or use a wired access point.
- Pause large downloads and uploads, and avoid crowded wireless channels where possible.
- Pair a controller supported by the TV or streaming device directly with that device.
- Test during the time of day you normally play.
- Compare a local game with a cloud game to isolate whether the delay is likely on the network or display side.
Xbox supports cloud gaming directly on select LG TVs, Samsung TVs, VIDAA OS devices, and specified Amazon Fire TV devices; availability depends on model, software version, region, subscription, and controller compatibility. Xbox’s TV guidance says cloud play requires a high-speed connection and cites approximately 20 Mbps for best performance on consoles, PCs, and tablets, while recommending 5-GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. This is guidance, not a guarantee: location and connection conditions affect results. Check current supported devices and requirements at Xbox’s TV cloud-gaming page. The console or TV reports 60 Hz instead of 120 Hz
- Connect the console directly to the TV, bypassing a receiver or switch.
- Try the console’s included cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Move to the TV input designated for 4K/120 or HDMI 2.1 and enable its enhanced signal format.
- Check console refresh-rate settings and whether the game itself supports a 120-Hz mode.
- Confirm the TV has a native 120-Hz panel, not merely a motion-interpolation label, then update firmware and recheck output information.
VRR is unavailable or greyed out
Check whether the TV and selected input support VRR, whether it is enabled on the console, and whether the current resolution, HDR mode, or picture mode allows it. Temporarily bypass receivers, switches, and capture devices, then check the TV’s VRR range and model-specific limitations.

Flicker can relate to OLED near-black behavior, unstable frame rates, a cable or port problem, firmware, or operation near the edge of the TV’s VRR range. Update both devices, try another suitable port or cable, and test with a stable frame-rate cap. If it continues in one title, disable VRR for that game; 60 Hz may be preferable to unstable 120-Hz output.

Game Mode looks worse
Game Mode may remove motion effects or image processing you prefer, and HDR Game presets can look darker or flatter than other HDR modes. Keep Game Mode as the responsiveness baseline, then adjust brightness, contrast, color temperature, and shadow detail carefully. Use separate SDR, HDR, or Dolby Vision profiles if your TV supports them, rather than restoring motion interpolation just to make movement look more processed.
The soundbar breaks 4K/120 or VRR
Connect the console directly to the TV to confirm the signal works. If supported by your equipment, send audio from the TV to the soundbar over eARC. Verify the receiver or soundbar passes the required gaming features, and check whether the TV’s eARC input is also one of its high-bandwidth gaming ports.
The TV feels responsive, but online multiplayer does not
Display input lag and online latency are separate. Game Mode can improve local screen response, but it cannot reduce the distance to a game server or repair packet loss. If only online play feels poor, investigate the connection and game server rather than changing the TV picture mode again.

Cloud gaming feels delayed despite a good speed test
Download speed is not the same as responsiveness. Round-trip latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, ISP congestion, server distance, controller delay, and limitations of the TV app can all matter. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi, a wired controller with Bluetooth, a local game with a cloud game, and the TV app with a supported streaming device if available.
When a TV upgrade is worth considering
Replace the TV only after free setup changes fail and its hardware lacks a feature you actually need. Compare exact models rather than brand labels; independent measurements of input lag are more useful than a manufacturer’s gaming claim. - Cloud gaming: Check whether the exact TV model and operating-system version support the service and controller you plan to use.
Quick victory checklist
- Game Mode is active on the console’s HDMI input.
- The console uses a port that supports the desired resolution, refresh rate, and VRR.
- The TV’s enhanced HDMI format is enabled where required.
- The cable supports the signal; the console is connected directly during troubleshooting.
- Console output information confirms the resolution and refresh rate you expect.
- VRR, ALLM, and HDR are enabled only where the TV, console, game, and signal mode support them.
- Motion interpolation and distracting processing effects are off or tested individually.
- For cloud play, the network is stable and the controller is paired to the device running the game.
