Stop Your PS5 From Turning On and Off With Your TV: Ultimate Techniques

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your PS5 powers on when the TV starts, enters Rest Mode when the TV shuts down, or wakes the television unexpectedly, the most likely cause is HDMI-CEC. On PS5, Sony labels this feature Enable HDMI Device Link.

Go to Settings > System > HDMI and turn Enable HDMI Device Link off. Turn both devices off and on again, then test them independently. If the behavior continues, disable HDMI-CEC on the TV and isolate soundbars, receivers, switches, and other HDMI devices.

First, identify what “turning off” means

Before treating the problem as a hardware failure, check the PS5 power indicator:

  • White: The console is on.
  • Orange: The console is in Rest Mode, not fully powered down. Depending on your settings, it can charge controllers, download updates, stay connected to the internet, and suspend games.
  • Off: The console is fully powered down.

A PS5 that follows the TV’s power state is usually responding to a control command over HDMI rather than suffering a failed shutdown. HDMI-CEC allows compatible devices to switch inputs, wake one another, and synchronize standby. Google documents manufacturer names such as Anynet+ and SIMPLINK for this general feature in its HDMI-CEC overview.

Typical HDMI-CEC symptoms

  • The PS5 starts when the TV switches to its HDMI input.
  • The PS5 enters Rest Mode when the TV is turned off.
  • The TV changes to the PS5 input as soon as the console starts.
  • The TV turns on again after the PS5 wakes.
  • The behavior disappears when the HDMI cable is disconnected.

Symptoms that point elsewhere

Do not blame HDMI-CEC if the PS5 shuts down while you are gaming and the TV remains on, loses power with HDMI disconnected, repeatedly cycles on and off, flashes blue without reaching a steady white light, displays an unexpected-shutdown error, becomes abnormally hot, makes unusual fan noise, or smells of overheated electronics.

Disable HDMI Device Link on the PS5

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open HDMI.
  4. Turn Enable HDMI Device Link off.
  5. Restart the PS5 and TV.

Sony documents this location in its PS5 energy-efficiency documentation. Test the result by turning on the TV without touching the PS5, turning off the TV while the PS5 is running, starting the PS5 while the TV is off, and changing the TV to another input.

What disabling the setting changes

The PS5 should still display video when you manually select its HDMI input. You may lose automatic input switching, synchronized power behavior, turning on the TV when the PS5 starts, and some TV-remote control functions. If those conveniences matter, you can re-enable the option after diagnosing the device that sends the unwanted command.

Turn off HDMI-CEC on the TV

If the PS5 still responds to the TV, disable the television’s CEC or device-link feature. Menu names vary by model, region, and firmware, so search Settings for “CEC,” “HDMI control,” “device link,” or “power control.” Common brand names are:

LG examples

On many current LG models, the path is Settings > All Settings > General > Devices > HDMI Settings > SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) > Off. Older webOS versions may use All Settings > Connection > HDMI Device Settings > SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) > Off. LG’s SIMPLINK instructions show why the exact path can differ.

Isolate soundbars, receivers, switches, and other HDMI equipment

A soundbar, AV receiver, streaming stick, cable box, capture device, or HDMI switch can relay CEC commands. Use this test:

  1. Turn off the TV and PS5.
  2. Disconnect every HDMI device except the PS5.
  3. Connect the PS5 directly to a TV HDMI input.
  4. Test power behavior with HDMI Device Link disabled and, if necessary, TV CEC disabled.
  5. Reconnect the soundbar, receiver, switch, and other devices one at a time.
  6. When the behavior returns, disable that device’s HDMI-CEC, power sync, standby sync, one-touch play, or automatic input-switching option.

Sony recommends a direct PS5-to-TV connection, removing intermediary audio/video equipment, trying another HDMI cable, and trying another HDMI port in its PS5 support guidance. A direct connection is also the cleanest long-term setup when a receiver or switch repeatedly reintroduces the problem.

Check the cable, port, and firmware

  1. Turn the devices off and reseat the cable at the PS5’s HDMI OUT and the TV’s HDMI IN.
  2. Try another TV HDMI port.
  3. Use the cable included with the PS5 or a reputable Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
  4. Update PS5 system software, TV firmware, and firmware for any soundbar, receiver, or HDMI switch.

Sony’s 4K and HDMI guide recommends the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed cable for demanding signals such as 4K at 120 Hz, and an appropriate HDMI 2.1-capable TV port may be needed for that video mode. HDMI 2.1 is not required for the basic CEC power fix. A defective cable more commonly causes a black screen, flicker, or failed handshake than genuine power cycling.

Check TV automatic-power features

If the TV itself turns on or off unexpectedly, inspect TV-side settings separately from CEC:

  • Quick-start or fast-standby features
  • Sleep and power-on timers
  • Automatic power-off and energy-saving standby
  • “Last input” behavior
  • Mobile-app and voice-assistant control
  • TV firmware updates

On supported LG televisions, LG documents Quick Start+ under Settings > All Settings > General > Devices > TV Management > Quick Start+ > Off. See LG’s intermittent-power troubleshooting for model-specific behavior.

Check PS5 Rest Mode timing

The PS5 can enter Rest Mode after inactivity, which may look like a shutdown. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode and review the gaming and media-playback timers. Sony notes that Don’t Put in Rest Mode keeps the console on but uses more power; this setting does not normally explain an immediate TV-linked power change. Details are in Sony’s power-saving settings.

Perform a safe complete power reset

Use this only after the PS5 has fully shut down.

  1. Choose Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5.
  2. Wait until the indicator is completely off, not lit or blinking.
  3. Turn off the TV.
  4. Unplug the TV and PS5 from the wall.
  5. Disconnect other HDMI devices and wait several minutes.
  6. Reconnect the PS5 directly to the TV.
  7. Turn on the TV and test again.

Never unplug the PS5 while its indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that interrupting an active or incomplete shutdown can cause data loss, corruption, or console damage.

Use Safe Mode only when the console is unstable by itself

If the PS5 shuts down with the TV uninvolved, Safe Mode offers diagnostic and recovery options:

  1. Hold the power button for about three seconds to turn the console off.
  2. Wait for the indicator to stop blinking and turn off.
  3. Hold the power button again.
  4. Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
  5. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

Available options include Restart PS5, Change Video Output, Repair Console Storage, and Update System Software. Sony lists these in its Safe Mode guidance. Do not choose reset or reinstall options casually: they can erase data. Back up saved data where possible. If the console cannot stay on long enough to use Safe Mode, use official PlayStation support rather than buying accessories.

Follow the right diagnostic path

The PS5 turns on when the TV turns on

Start with Settings > System > HDMI > Enable HDMI Device Link > Off. If that fails, disable TV CEC and test with every other HDMI device disconnected.

The PS5 enters Rest Mode when the TV turns off

This is commonly synchronized standby. Confirm the orange indicator, then disable HDMI Device Link and, if needed, the TV’s CEC.

The TV turns on after the PS5 starts

Disable CEC on the PS5, TV, or intermediary device that is issuing the wake command. Reconnect equipment individually to identify it.

The PS5 powers off during a game

With the TV still on, investigate the AC cable, wall outlet, surge protector, ventilation, dust, overheating, system software, storage corruption, and possible hardware failure. HDMI-CEC does not adequately explain this pattern.

The PS5 repeatedly starts and stops

Disconnect all HDMI equipment and test the console directly with the TV, a different outlet, and a known-good cable. If cycling continues, the issue is more likely console-side than CEC-related.
