If Stray closes immediately, shows “Preparing to launch” and returns to Play, or gets stuck on a black screen, start with Steam’s file verification and your graphics driver before reinstalling the game. Stray’s Steam requirements list 64-bit Windows 10 and DirectX 12; Windows 11 is not automatically the cause, but compatibility depends on working drivers, dependencies and a PC that meets the requirements.
Identify what happens when you click Play
The symptom helps narrow the next step. If Steam briefly shows Stray as running and then returns to Play, check the game files, drivers and background software. A specific Visual C++ error points toward a missing or damaged runtime. A black screen before the menu makes overlays, graphics initialization and local settings worth checking. If the game starts but crashes later, investigate stability and graphics settings rather than treating it as a launch failure.
- Nothing happens: Check Windows Security or antivirus quarantine, verify the files, and close overlays or injectors.
- “Preparing to launch” ends at Play: Follow Steam’s Windows launch troubleshooting, beginning with updates, file verification and non-essential software.
- Missing Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime: Use Microsoft’s redistributable package; do not download individual DLL files from third-party sites.
- Black screen or immediate crash: Test with overlays disabled, then consider a safe configuration reset and Windows crash logs.
- Crashes after gameplay begins: Check for unstable overclocking, overheating, graphics settings or marginal hardware. These are possible causes, not established Stray-specific defects.
Check whether your PC meets Stray’s requirements
Steam lists these requirements for Stray. They are a baseline, not a promise that every system meeting the minimum will run smoothly or launch without a driver or configuration problem. Steam’s Stray listing names Windows 10, 64-bit, and DirectX 12.

The listing does not separately name Windows 11. Microsoft says many older apps can run on newer Windows versions, so Windows 11 is a reasonable environment to try, not an unconditional compatibility guarantee. See Microsoft’s compatibility guidance. A 32-bit Windows installation is not the listed target. A GPU’s DirectX support alone also does not show that it has sufficient performance, video memory or a functioning driver.

Check your Windows and hardware details
- Press Win + R, enter
msinfo32, and check System Type, OS Name and Version. The system type should indicate an x64-based PC. - Press Win + R, enter
dxdiag, and inspect the Operating System, Processor, Memory and Display tabs for your GPU and driver details. - Open Settings → System → Storage and make sure there is room beyond the game’s listed 10 GB for Windows, updates and temporary files.
- On a laptop, check that Stray uses the dedicated GPU. In Windows, look under Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game executable if needed, and choose High performance when the dedicated GPU is available. Labels vary by Windows version.
Try the low-risk Steam and Windows fixes first
1. Restart Windows and Steam
- Exit Stray, then use Steam → Exit.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Steam processes remain, end them.
- Restart Windows, open Steam and try Stray before launching other games or utilities.
2. Install normal Windows updates
Go to Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install pending updates and restart. Steam includes Windows updates in its launch troubleshooting advice. Do not assume an optional preview update or major feature upgrade is required. If the failure started immediately after a Windows or driver update, note the date; a clean driver installation or rollback of the affected driver may be a more useful test than changing several settings at once.
3. Update the graphics driver from its manufacturer
- Identify the GPU in Device Manager → Display adapters or in
dxdiag. - Download a stable driver from the GPU manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.
- Install it, choosing a clean-install option if the installer provides one, then restart Windows.
- Test Stray before reinstalling overlays or tuning utilities.
Avoid driver-download aggregators and automatic driver-updater applications; they complicate diagnosis without being necessary for this check.
4. Verify Stray’s Steam files
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Stray and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam and try the game.
Steam’s launch checklist recommends verification because incomplete or corrupted game files can prevent launch. Steam may reacquire damaged or missing files, but verification checks Steam-managed files; it cannot repair a graphics driver, runtime, security block or hardware fault.

Repair a missing runtime or prerequisite
If Stray displays a Visual C++ Runtime error, download the supported package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable page. Microsoft explains that applications built with its C++ tools can require these runtime libraries and that the package architecture must match the application. The available documentation does not establish one exact Visual C++ version as the cause of every Stray launch failure.
- Install the current supported x64 package on a 64-bit Windows gaming PC.
- If the error remains, install the x86 package too; a helper component can need 32-bit libraries even on 64-bit Windows.
- If the installer offers Repair, select it. Restart Windows afterward.
- If needed, run Steam’s file verification again.
Never download files such as vcruntime140.dll or api-ms-win...dll individually from DLL websites. Steam notes that games may also rely on installers for components such as DirectX, Visual C++ or PhysX, and that a canceled or blocked prerequisite installer can prevent launch. Use Steam’s prerequisite guidance if an installer appears to have been interrupted.
To check for local installers, open Stray’s Steam properties and choose Browse local files. If a _CommonRedist folder or prerequisite installer exists, run the relevant Microsoft installer and restart. Not every installation has the same folder structure. The Steam requirement for DirectX 12 does not mean that forcing a DirectX 12 launch option is the right fix.

Rule out overlays, mods and security blocks
Steam recommends disabling non-essential software when a game will not launch. Temporarily close or disable the following, then test Stray:
- Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay and Xbox Game Bar;
- NVIDIA or AMD overlays and recording features;
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server;
- OBS game capture, ReShade, injectors and unofficial mods;
- RGB, audio-enhancement, controller-remapping and motherboard utilities.
Test one category at a time. If the game works, re-enable programs individually to identify the conflict rather than leaving everything disabled.

Check quarantine and blocked-app history
If Stray.exe is missing or seems to disappear, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Check for a quarantined Stray file. Restore or allow it only if it is a legitimate file from your genuine Steam installation, then verify Stray’s files. For third-party antivirus, inspect its quarantine and blocked-application history. Do not turn off protection globally or exclude the entire Steam library. If Controlled Folder Access or ransomware protection blocks writes to the game’s configuration, use only a narrow, temporary test and restore protection afterward.

If the failure began after adding ReShade, a mod, a custom launcher or another injector, remove it and return the installation to an unmodified state before verifying the files. Community notes on Stray’s configuration and rendering may help with advanced cases, but workarounds can depend on game version, driver and hardware.

A damaged local configuration may cause a failure before the menu appears. The exact save or configuration location can vary by Steam account, Windows setup and game build, so do not delete a folder based on an unverified path.
- Close Stray and Steam.
- Locate the suspected Stray save or configuration folder and make a separate backup.
- Rename the suspected configuration folder rather than deleting it. This lets the game create fresh settings while preserving the original for recovery.
- Restart Steam and test Stray. If it opens, adjust graphics settings gradually.
- Restore save files only after identifying which files contain progress and which contain settings.
Deleting or overwriting save data can lose progress. Steam Cloud may also synchronize a changed state, so keep a backup before moving or restoring files.

Use launch and compatibility options only as controlled tests
Launch the executable for diagnosis
In Steam Library, right-click Stray and select Manage → Browse local files, or use Properties → Installed Files → Browse. Double-click the game executable once. Record any specific error. If it produces no window, the problem may still involve a dependency, permissions, a security block or an immediate crash. Direct launch is only a diagnostic test: Steam components may still be needed, and PCGamingWiki notes that Steam must be running for direct launch in some configurations. Do not replace Steam files or try to bypass Steam.
Try windowed mode or compatibility troubleshooting
If the game reaches a black screen, you can test one launch option at a time in Steam → Library → right-click Stray → Properties → General → Launch Options. Options commonly discussed for Unreal Engine PC games include -windowed and -borderless, but the available sources do not establish a universal Stray launch option that fixes launch failures. Remove an option if it does not help. PCGamingWiki records rendering workarounds that can vary by configuration; forcing DirectX 12 is not a general fix, even though Steam lists DirectX 12 in the requirements.
For a targeted compatibility test, right-click the game executable, select Properties → Compatibility → Run compatibility troubleshooter, and test the suggested setting. Undo it if it does not help. Windows compatibility settings are a reversible experiment, not the default remedy for a game whose Steam listing targets Windows 10.
Find a crash clue in Windows
If the game still closes, collect the failure details rather than repeating the same reinstall.
Reliability Monitor
- Press Win + R, enter
perfmon /reland press Enter. - Find a red failure recorded at the time you launched Stray.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code and timestamp.
Event Viewer
- Press Win + X → Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Inspect errors recorded at the launch time and note the faulting module and exception code.
For Steam or publisher support, include your Windows edition and build, Steam version, CPU, GPU, driver version, RAM, exact error text, whether Steam showed “Running,” whether the game worked previously, recent driver or Windows changes, file-verification results and whether disabling overlays changed anything. Do not post full crash dumps publicly without removing personal information.
When to escalate or consider another system
If your hardware is below the listed minimum, software tweaks cannot reliably make it equivalent to supported hardware. Try a PC that meets the requirements, consider a practical hardware upgrade, or use another supported platform you already have access to. If the game remains broken on a system that meets requirements after the checks above, contact Steam’s Stray technical support or the game publisher with the crash details you collected. If Windows logs point to broader memory or hardware faults, a qualified local PC technician may be appropriate. Reinstalling Steam is a later option, not a first step; preserve the steamapps library folder if you try it.
