To use a virtual background while streaming, you can feed a processed camera into your streaming software. A documented route is NVIDIA Broadcast: on a compatible Windows PC with a supported NVIDIA RTX GPU, set up its virtual camera, then select Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast) as the camera source in OBS Studio. Streamlabs Desktop can use it too. If you do not have supported RTX hardware, this particular method is not an option; OBS supports more operating systems, but your operating system alone does not provide a virtual-background effect.
How the virtual-camera setup works
NVIDIA Broadcast applies effects to webcam input and makes the processed video available to other applications as a virtual camera. OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop then treats that output like a camera source. This keeps the background effect separate from the streaming app’s scene composition.
- Check eligibility first. NVIDIA Broadcast is a Windows 10 64-bit application and requires a supported RTX-class NVIDIA GPU. Confirm the current requirements in NVIDIA’s FAQ before installing; eligible models and driver requirements can change.
- Install and configure NVIDIA Broadcast. Choose your physical webcam as the camera input and select the background effect you want, such as blur or replacement. The app also offers effects for microphone and speaker input, but those are separate from the camera-background setup.
- Add its camera to OBS or Streamlabs. In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and select Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast). In Streamlabs Desktop, add a Video Capture Device and choose NVIDIA Broadcast as the device.
- Check framing and resolution. In Streamlabs Desktop, match the camera resolution in Streamlabs and NVIDIA Broadcast. NVIDIA’s setup guidance also describes configuring the camera output before using it in the receiving app. Reload the camera source in the streaming app after changing relevant Broadcast settings if the output does not update.
- Preview the complete scene. Check the background edges, framing, overlays and game capture together before going live. The effect, encoder, scene and game all use system resources, so test with the scene and output settings you intend to stream.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
NVIDIA Broadcast
NVIDIA’s FAQ accessed in 2026 lists GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX or higher, 8 GB of RAM, driver 570.xx or higher, and an Intel Core i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 2600 or higher as recommended CPU guidance. These are NVIDIA’s stated requirements and guidance, not a guarantee that every scene will run smoothly. NVIDIA lists a higher requirement—a desktop RTX 3060—for Virtual Key Light and Studio Voice; those additional effects are not needed just to set a virtual camera background.
NVIDIA’s product information identified Broadcast version 2.2.1 and driver R570 or higher. Software and driver versions are subject to change, so check NVIDIA’s current FAQ and product information for the version available to you.

OBS Studio
OBS lists basic compatibility with Windows 10 or 11 and DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics, macOS 11 or later with OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 plus X or Wayland. These are OBS requirements, not a promise that the system can stream a particular game, resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that the workload depends on the encoder, output settings and scene complexity.
OBS being available on your operating system does not make NVIDIA Broadcast available there: the documented Broadcast workflow is Windows-only and requires eligible NVIDIA hardware.

Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 or later and 8 GB RAM as minimum guidance, and recommends 16 GB or more, an SSD and stronger CPU/GPU hardware for demanding content. Its requirements page gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms as network guidance. These vendor recommendations are not performance guarantees, and the figures do not establish that a specific virtual-background setup will work at those settings.
Choosing a setup for your PC
| Option | Operating-system scope | Background processing path | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS with NVIDIA Broadcast | NVIDIA Broadcast is Windows 10 64-bit; OBS supports Windows, macOS and Linux/Unix within its stated requirements. | Broadcast processes the webcam and exposes a virtual camera; OBS adds it as a Video Capture Device. | Requires a supported RTX GPU and compatible NVIDIA software/driver. The overall scene must also fit the PC’s workload capacity. |
| Streamlabs Desktop with NVIDIA Broadcast | NVIDIA Broadcast is Windows 10 64-bit; Streamlabs lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 or later as its minimum guidance. | Broadcast provides the virtual camera; Streamlabs adds it as a Video Capture Device. | Requires supported RTX hardware and, for correct camera display, matching resolution settings in Streamlabs and Broadcast. |
The documented route here is NVIDIA Broadcast. The available sources do not establish a matched-hardware quality or performance winner against other virtual-background products, or identify a best webcam or green screen. A physical webcam is simply the camera input if you do not already have one; a green screen is an optional chroma-key approach, not a requirement for Broadcast’s AI segmentation.

Settings and performance checks before going live
- Resolution: Use a camera resolution supported by the camera and keep the Broadcast and Streamlabs settings aligned. The cited setup guidance specifically warns that a mismatch can prevent the camera from displaying correctly in Streamlabs.
- Encoder and scene load: Do not infer stream capacity from basic app compatibility or RAM alone. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, overlays, game load and background effects all contribute to the workload.
- Network: Streamlabs’ 3.6 Mbps guidance applies to 720p at 30 fps on most platforms; it is not a universal bitrate recommendation for every service, resolution or frame rate.
- Game performance: NVIDIA has documented that Broadcast can affect game performance when gaming and streaming concurrently. Test your own scene. If the game becomes unstable, reduce its load or prioritize a stable stream; the available guidance does not support a universal FPS-cost figure.
- Stream key: A virtual background changes the camera image; it does not replace the streaming platform’s normal broadcast setup. Configure your destination and stream key in OBS or Streamlabs as usual, and keep the key private.
Troubleshooting a missing or gray camera
NVIDIA Broadcast is not listed as a camera
- Confirm Broadcast is installed and running, and that its physical webcam input is selected and available.
- In the receiving app, reopen the Video Capture Device properties and check the device list for the Broadcast camera.
- If the device remains absent, check NVIDIA’s current troubleshooting guidance for virtual-device visibility and confirm that your software and driver meet the current requirements.
The camera appears gray or stops updating
- Check that the physical camera is not already unavailable to another application and that Broadcast is receiving an image.
- Reload the camera source in the receiving application after changing Broadcast settings; NVIDIA advises reloading the camera in applicable cases.
- For Streamlabs, verify that the camera resolution matches between Streamlabs Desktop and Broadcast.
OBS virtual-camera trouble on macOS
OBS documents a macOS system-software permission issue among its virtual-camera troubleshooting cases. Follow the OBS guidance for your macOS and OBS versions rather than applying a Windows-specific NVIDIA fix to a Mac.
The game or stream becomes unstable
Run a local preview or test broadcast with the game, camera effect, overlays and intended encoder settings active. If performance changes only when gaming and streaming together, reduce competing workload and retest. There is no single FPS reduction that applies to every GPU, game and scene.

Copyright and live-stream policy checks
A virtual background changes what viewers see behind the camera; it does not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, images or other material included in the stream. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check the relevant platform’s rules before going live. Keep your stream key confidential, since anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than a live webcam background, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or create virtual backgrounds. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
