If a prerecorded YouTube video is black in Streamlabs Desktop, first check whether it plays normally in your browser outside Streamlabs. If the browser video is blank too, troubleshoot browser playback; if it appears normally there but the Streamlabs preview is black, focus on the capture source and graphics configuration. The symptom alone does not identify one certain cause.
First, find out where the black screen appears
Play the same video in your browser without relying on the Streamlabs preview. This simple comparison separates a playback problem from a capture problem.

A black capture preview and a blank YouTube player are different symptoms. Work on the branch that matches what you see before changing settings.
If the video is visible in your browser but not Streamlabs
Check the capture source
Confirm which source is meant to show the video—such as Window Capture or Display Capture—and that it is targeting the right window or display. A capture source aimed at the wrong window, or one that needs to be refreshed, can look like a playback failure even when the video itself works.

- Close and restart Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.
- Remove the affected capture source, then add it again and select the intended window or display.
- Check the source’s capture mode and whether overlays or other software could be interfering.
Streamlabs lists restarting as administrator and deleting and re-adding a source among general capture troubleshooting steps. Its black-screen article focuses on game capture, so these are general troubleshooting measures—not a confirmed fix for capturing a prerecorded YouTube video. If you are using a laptop, check the GPU setting
Laptops with integrated and discrete graphics can run Streamlabs on one GPU while a capture configuration depends on the other. Streamlabs’ laptop guidance recommends turning off Force GPU as render device in Settings > Advanced, in the Video section, then restarting Streamlabs Desktop and checking the preview again. Menu placement and graphics-selection options can vary by Windows version and configuration.

For relevant Windows setups, the same guidance describes selecting integrated or power-saving graphics for display or window capture. Which options are available depends on the computer and Windows version; do not assume every laptop exposes the same controls.
Streamlabs Support describes the dual-GPU constraint this way: “Unfortunately, this is a limitation of laptops when trying to use Game Capture and Window/Display Capture because Streamlabs Desktop can only be run by one of the two graphics processors at any given moment on a laptop.” This is an explanation of certain laptop capture setups, not proof that every black preview has that cause. If the YouTube player is also blank or green
- Try another browser. If the video works there, the problem may be specific to the original browser or its playback configuration.
- Turn off browser hardware acceleration and restart the browser before testing again. The exact setting name and location depend on the browser.
- Update your graphics drivers using the appropriate support channel for your computer or graphics hardware.
YouTube recommends these checks for a green video player. They are useful playback diagnostics, but YouTube’s page does not promise they will fix every blank-player or Streamlabs capture issue. Collect the details that distinguish one capture setup from another before changing more settings or asking for help:

- Operating system and version, and whether the computer is a laptop or desktop.
- Whether the video plays outside Streamlabs, and whether the browser player is blank or green.
- Browser name and version, and whether hardware acceleration is enabled.
- Streamlabs Desktop version and the capture source type and mode.
- For a laptop, its GPU configuration and whether Streamlabs is using integrated or discrete graphics.
Without those details, the exact cause cannot be determined from “black screen” alone. The official guidance covers related capture and playback issues, but does not establish a guaranteed fix for this precise combination.
