A Streamlabs Desktop stream that drops after running for hours has a symptom, not an obvious cause. Check what Streamlabs and YouTube reported at the moment of failure, then test the outbound connection before changing settings. Network instability is a common explanation for dropped frames, but encoder, ingest, and account errors can point elsewhere.
First, capture what happened
Before restarting or changing settings, note the failure time and the exact message shown in Streamlabs Desktop. In YouTube Live Control Room, check whether the incoming feed was lost or marked unhealthy. Also record whether a local recording or preview continued, whether Streamlabs showed dropped frames, and any encoder or CPU warnings. These clues help separate a lost network connection from a local encoder problem or a stream-key error.
- Dropped frames, packet loss, or an unstable outbound connection: investigate the network first.
- Encoder errors, a frozen local output, or high CPU load: investigate Streamlabs and the encoder settings.
- An error starting the encoder or an authentication/key message: check the stream key and account permissions.
- YouTube reports an unhealthy or missing incoming feed while the local output looks normal: investigate the path from your computer to YouTube, including the selected ingest server.
These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a cause. Streamlabs characterizes dropped frames and disconnects as usually network-related; YouTube also advises checking encoder health and the outbound connection.
Test the connection during a stream
A speed test taken after the disconnect is only a snapshot. It does not establish that your upload stayed stable during the stream or reveal every instance of packet loss. Streamlabs’ ping guide lists YouTube’s test host as a.rtmp.youtube.com. Run a continuous ping while streaming and keep the output through the time the problem usually occurs. Compare the result with Streamlabs’ suggested goals: under 50 ms ping in North America and Europe, under 70 ms in Asia and the Middle East, a jitter gap under 30 ms, and 0% packet loss. These are Streamlabs’ troubleshooting targets, not YouTube requirements. While testing, compare the configured audio and video bitrate with the upload capacity that remains stable—not just the highest result from a speed test. Check whether the connection worsens when other devices are active or large uploads and downloads are running. If you use Wi-Fi, repeating the same test over Ethernet can help isolate whether the wireless link is contributing; wired networking is a comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
If the evidence points to network instability
- Try a nearby ingest server. In Streamlabs Desktop’s stream settings, manually select a nearby server instead of Auto; if the issue continues, compare with the second-nearest available server. Change one setting at a time and observe the stream through the usual failure window. Streamlabs’ dropped-frames guide recommends testing a nearby or second-closest server.
- Restart network equipment. Restart the modem, router, and any switch between the computer and router. This can clear a transient equipment problem, but if loss returns, keep the ping output and timestamps for your ISP.
- Keep the bitrate within sustained upload capacity. If the configured bitrate is too close to the upload your connection can reliably sustain, reduce it and test again. Do not choose a target from a peak speed-test result alone; the appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and connection stability.
- Compare wired and wireless connections. If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet under otherwise similar conditions. A difference can help narrow the problem to the wireless link or its conditions.
- Check the network adapter and driver. Streamlabs suggests disabling and re-enabling the adapter, and reinstalling its driver from the device maker if needed. Use the correct driver for your computer and adapter.
- Ask the ISP or network administrator about persistent loss. Provide test results and failure times. Streamlabs’ guidance mentions outbound TCP port 1935; do not change firewall or router rules indiscriminately. Ask the ISP, network administrator, or router documentation whether a restriction applies to your setup.
If the connection looks stable, inspect the encoder
In YouTube Live Control Room, check encoder health, CPU load, and any messages shown during the failure. Confirm that the feed looks and sounds right, and update Streamlabs Desktop to a current version. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version and checking both encoder output and outbound connection strength; see YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

For YouTube’s general encoder guidance, RTMP or RTMPS are supported protocols, CBR is specified, and the recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Choose quality your connection can reliably sustain and test before going live. YouTube’s current guidance does not make one bitrate suitable for every stream: resolution, frame rate, codec, and available stable upload capacity all matter. If Streamlabs reports an invalid connection URL or another specific going-live error, use the matching steps in its Desktop going-live troubleshooting guide. That guide includes checking the key and custom server selection; its Bind to IP suggestion applies to the specified invalid URL error, not every midstream disconnect. Avoid changing unrelated settings when the displayed error does not match.

Renew the stream key only for a key-related error
A stream that authenticates successfully and then drops hours later does not, by itself, establish that its key expired. If YouTube or Streamlabs reports an encoder-start, authentication, or key error, open YouTube Live Control Room, get a new stream key, and update the key in Streamlabs Desktop. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset the key; its live-stream settings guidance explains managing stream settings. Streamlabs also recommends checking the entered key in its going-live troubleshooting guide.
Escalate with evidence—and protect your setup
- Contact your ISP if continuous tests show persistent packet loss or instability. Include timestamps and the ping output from the failure window.
- Contact Streamlabs support if network tests look stable but Streamlabs shows application or encoder errors. Include the exact message, failure time, and relevant YouTube Live Control Room indicators.
- Do not clear the cache as an early fix. Streamlabs warns that clearing it can remove scene collections and settings. Its Desktop troubleshooting guide advises contacting support before doing this.
