Streamlabs Desktop Keeps Buffering While Streaming Prerecorded Videos to YouTube: How to Diagnose It

“Buffering” is not one diagnosis. Identify whether Streamlabs reports lagged, skipped, or dropped frames—or only YouTube viewers buffer—then troubleshoot the matching part of the stream.

“Buffering” can mean a stuttering Streamlabs preview, lagged or skipped frames, dropped frames, or buffering in YouTube viewers’ players. Those symptoms point to different parts of the stream, so check which one is happening before changing bitrate or buying equipment. Streaming prerecorded video does not, by itself, identify the cause: the issue may be in rendering, encoding, network delivery, or YouTube playback.

First identify where the buffering happens

Before changing settings, note what you can actually see. A local preview can stutter even when viewers receive a stable stream; conversely, YouTube viewers can buffer when the Streamlabs preview looks normal. If you can, check the live player from another device or connection and compare it with the Streamlabs preview and status counters.

  • Local preview stutters: investigate rendering and GPU load first.
  • Streamlabs reports lagged frames: investigate compositor/rendering load, commonly associated with high GPU use.
  • Streamlabs reports skipped frames: investigate encoder load, often associated with high CPU use.
  • Streamlabs reports dropped frames: investigate network delivery, upload headroom, local network equipment, and ingest-server selection.
  • Only YouTube viewers buffer: compare the player with Streamlabs output and YouTube stream-health messages. Without those observations, the cause cannot be narrowed to the encoder, network, or YouTube playback path.

Record the frame counters and any YouTube stream-health messages before making changes. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether a particular branch responds.

Fix lagged frames and a stuttering preview

Lagged frames indicate that the compositor is struggling to render the scene in time. Check GPU use and simplify the scene or lower the stream’s output demand. A prerecorded-video scene may be relatively light, but other active sources, filters, overlays, or a game running at the same time can add rendering work.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check whether GPU use is unusually high while streaming.
  2. Temporarily remove or disable nonessential scene sources, filters, and overlays to see whether rendering stabilizes.
  3. If necessary, lower output resolution or other output demands, then test again.
  4. If a game or other high-load workload is running too, lower its graphics quality or limit its frame rate; those gaming-specific changes are not relevant when the prerecorded video is the only demanding workload.

Streamlabs’ getting-started guidance presents 1280×720 as a possible performance-and-quality balance, not a universal YouTube prescription. Treat it as a test option if your current output is too demanding, rather than a setting every channel must use.

Fix skipped frames and encoder overload

Skipped frames point toward encoding pressure. Check CPU use and the selected encoder. If you use software x264 and CPU load is high, try a faster x264 preset to reduce processing demand. If your system and Streamlabs version support it, test hardware encoding such as NVENC or AMD encoding instead.

  1. Note your current encoder and CPU use while the issue is occurring.
  2. If using x264, test a faster preset.
  3. Alternatively, test a supported hardware encoder.
  4. Compare the result during a representative stream. Keep the change only if it improves the skipped-frame symptom without creating a different problem.

Do not assume that lowering bitrate will fix skipped frames: that counter points to encoding pressure, not necessarily network capacity.

Fix dropped frames and unstable delivery

Dropped frames point toward network delivery. Streamlabs Support describes dropped frames or stream disconnects as “almost always a network issue”; that is general troubleshooting guidance, not a diagnosis of your particular connection. Check whether the combined audio and video bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity. A speed test is only a snapshot: it cannot by itself establish stable upload throughout a stream or rule out packet loss.

  1. Compare bitrate with available upload. Make sure the combined stream bitrate leaves headroom rather than consuming all available upload capacity.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if practical. If you currently stream over Wi-Fi, an Ethernet connection is a useful isolation test. It may show whether the wireless path contributes; it is not a guaranteed fix.
  3. Restart existing network equipment. Restart the modem, router, or switch already in use, then test again before considering replacement hardware.
  4. Try another ingest server. Where available, manually select the closest or second-closest server instead of Auto and compare results.
  5. If instability persists, investigate the network path. Streamlabs suggests checking or reinstalling network drivers and contacting your ISP if packet loss or connection problems continue. Its guidance also mentions outbound TCP port 1935; do not open ports without understanding your network or following your network administrator’s or provider’s advice.

Use Dynamic Bitrate only for network trouble

Streamlabs’ Dynamic Bitrate setting can lower bitrate during network trouble and raise it toward the target as conditions recover. It is a network aid for dropped frames, not a fix for CPU encoder overload or GPU compositor overload. The documented path is Settings > Advanced, then Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming. The label may vary by Streamlabs version.

Set YouTube encoding options to match the stream

Choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and sustained upload your setup can reliably deliver. YouTube Help’s current retrieved encoder table recommends H.264 at 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, with a 6 Mbps minimum; for 1080p at 30 fps, it recommends 14 Mbps, with a 5 Mbps minimum. These are recommendations in the retrieved table, which does not state a publication year. Use the row for your actual output rather than treating those figures as a universal bitrate target.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. Confirm that your installed Streamlabs version supports the codec you intend to use, and choose settings from YouTube’s guidance for your selected output rather than copying settings intended for another platform.

  1. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and codec your system can render and encode reliably.
  2. Set a bitrate appropriate to that output and your sustained upload capacity.
  3. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where supported; do not exceed four seconds.
  4. Test before going live with representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube stream health and messages during the event.

YouTube Help specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A test using the actual prerecorded video and scene is more useful than judging performance from a static preview.

If the stream will not start, check the YouTube event connection

A failure to start is different from buffering after a stream is underway. Streamlabs documents logging in with a YouTube account, creating an event in YouTube Studio, and selecting that event in the Streamlabs Go Live window. Its going-live troubleshooting guidance also covers reloading the server or selecting one manually and other connection checks. These steps address event or connection setup; they do not, by themselves, diagnose ongoing viewer buffering.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
