Which is better for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Streamlabs Desktop offers a guided setup path: its official quick start covers onboarding, connecting a channel, configuring video, adding overlays, and testing before going live. OBS Studio is another option, but its official system requirements warn that a compatible computer is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording; workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Can OBS or Streamlabs run 24/7?
Both can be used to send a live feed to YouTube, but the available official documentation does not establish that either is guaranteed to run continuously or recover unattended from every failure. A 24/7 stream depends on the complete chain: computer, encoder, application, power, internet connection, YouTube ingest, and the content being sent.
Plan as if a failure is possible. Rehearse for an extended period on the computer, scene collection, and network you intend to use. The official guidance calls for testing and monitoring but does not prescribe a specific rehearsal length.

Set YouTube’s encoding settings before choosing a preset
Use YouTube’s current recommendations as the target, then configure the encoder in whichever application you choose. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 with RTMP/RTMPS; the bitrate examples below are specifically for H.264. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where supported.

How much upload speed do you need?
YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and allowing about 20% headroom. For example, a stream configured at 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps of stable upload capacity; use YouTube’s suggested margin rather than treating 8 Mbps as the full connection requirement. If you run a primary and backup stream, account for both bitrates in the total.
Run a speed test from the streaming computer’s network and repeat it at times when the connection is normally busy. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and warns that network disruption can break a stream. Prefer wired Ethernet where practical, and avoid competing uploads or heavy network use during the stream. Ethernet is a sensible reliability measure, not a guarantee against outages.

Configure and preflight the stream
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. The channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days, according to YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Pick the format and encoder. Decide resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on the content, machine headroom, and measured upload capacity. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select RTMPS when supported.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. In the chosen desktop application, link or configure the YouTube channel and use the stream key for the intended broadcast. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the channel. Do not share screenshots or logs that expose it.
- Check the complete scene. Test gameplay or video motion, overlays, microphone or other audio, and transitions. Look at the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health status before making the broadcast public.
- Allow time before a scheduled event. YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are event-planning recommendations, not a 24/7 reliability standard.
- Verify recording and access. If you are recording locally, check that the archive file is growing. Confirm the stream is accessible as intended and that both audio and video remain correct.
- Test continuity measures. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder when downtime matters. Practice the failover procedure, but do not assume it guarantees seamless recovery in every setup. Keep monitoring audio and video after launch.
Content rights and YouTube live-stream rules
Use only content you have the rights and permissions to stream, including game audio, music, and third-party video or artwork. A long-running broadcast does not change the underlying copyright rules. YouTube may restrict or interrupt a live stream if it detects content that violates its policies or rights-holder restrictions. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright guidance for the specific content you plan to use; the technical setup alone cannot establish that a game soundtrack, music track, or reused video is authorized.
For gaming channels, pay particular attention to licensed soundtrack settings in games and any publisher or rights-holder conditions that apply to streamed gameplay. Keep records of licenses or permissions where relevant, and do not treat a video being available online as permission to rebroadcast it.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 desktop stream
- YouTube preview is blank or the stream never appears: Check that the correct channel and current stream key are selected, that YouTube’s Live Control Room is configured for the broadcast, and that the encoder is actually sending. If the key may have been exposed or changed, update it in YouTube and the application.
- Stream health reports unstable connection: Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity, restore the recommended headroom, stop competing uploads, and use Ethernet if available. Re-test at the time the connection is normally busiest.
- Video stutters or frames are missed: Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and simplify the scene, then test again. Encoder choice and scene complexity affect system load; do not infer a software-wide performance difference from one setup.
- Audio is missing, doubled, or out of sync: Check the selected input and output devices, scene audio sources, and monitoring configuration. Verify the result in the YouTube preview before relying on the live feed.
- The computer becomes overloaded or unstable: Close unnecessary programs, inspect encoder and system load, and reduce the stream workload. Streamlabs notes that content, concurrent programs, and hardware affect requirements; OBS similarly flags encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity.
- The stream drops while unattended: Determine whether the cause was the computer, application, power, network, or YouTube ingest. Test recovery and backup-encoder steps deliberately. The reviewed documentation does not establish automatic restart or seamless failover for either desktop application.
- A local recording is missing or stops growing: Check the recording path, available storage, and whether local recording is enabled; a live stream being sent does not by itself prove that an archive is being saved.
