Use Streamlabs Desktop if you stream from a Windows or Mac computer and want broad control over scenes, sources, audio, recording and overlays. Use Streamlabs Console if you play on Xbox and want to configure a Streamlabs broadcast in a browser without a separate streaming PC or capture card. Console is more limited: its documented microphone route uses a headset plugged into the controller, and its multistream workflow requires Twitch.
What is the difference?
Desktop is an application installed on a Windows or Mac computer. It brings game or desktop capture, camera, microphone, scenes, overlays, alerts, chat, recording and audio filters into a PC production workflow. Console is a browser-configured service for broadcasting from Xbox, using the Xbox Twitch app to select Streamlabs as the destination.
The practical choice is less about which interface looks better and more about where the game runs, how much production control you need, what microphone setup you can use, and whether avoiding extra hardware matters.
Which one should you use?
| Choose | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs Desktop | PC streamers who want flexible sources and scenes, desktop capture, recording, or detailed audio and overlay control. | It requires a capable computer. Capturing console gameplay into the PC workflow can require a capture card and additional setup. |
| Streamlabs Console | Xbox players who want Streamlabs scenes, overlays and engagement widgets without a separate streaming PC or capture card. | It has a narrower peripheral and destination workflow: the documented mic setup is a controller-connected headset, and the multistream guide requires Twitch. |
| Native console broadcast | Players who prioritize a simple, low-cost setup over Streamlabs overlays and alerts. | Native console apps offer less customization and do not display Streamlabs alerts or overlays, according to Streamlabs’ console guide. |
What Streamlabs Desktop offers
Desktop is the more adaptable option when the computer is already central to your stream. It can combine the game or desktop with a webcam, microphone and other sources, then organize them into scenes. Streamlabs’ comparison also lists chat integration for Twitch, YouTube and Kick; destination support and feature packaging can change, so confirm current support in Streamlabs’ own product information before planning a specific multistream setup.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Desktop when production flexibility matters
- You want to capture a PC game or the desktop itself.
- You need to switch among scenes or arrange multiple sources.
- You want to choose a camera and microphone as PC sources or use audio filters and recording tools.
- You are willing to configure a PC application and, for console gameplay, potentially add capture hardware.
Using Desktop with console gameplay
A capture card routes the console’s video signal to the computer, where Desktop can use it as a source. This adds hardware, cabling and compatibility checks; it is unnecessary if you use Console instead. Streamlabs’ older guide names Elgato and AVerMedia products as examples, but those examples are not a current model recommendation. Before buying, verify compatibility with your console, computer ports, resolution and frame rate.
What Streamlabs Console offers on Xbox
Console is designed to avoid the PC-and-capture-card chain. Streamlabs’ FAQ describes setting up scenes and selected widgets in a browser, then choosing Streamlabs in the Xbox Twitch app. It lists Chat Box, Event List and Stream Labels among available widgets and says multiple scenes are supported.

Microphone and camera
The FAQ’s supported microphone route is a headset with a mic plugged into the Xbox controller; it says a separate external microphone is not supported. A webcam is optional: the FAQ describes connecting a USB webcam to Xbox or using a mobile device as the camera source.
Supported console and destinations
Streamlabs’ FAQ describes Console as Xbox-only and says PlayStation and Switch are unsupported. Do not assume Console is a general-purpose broadcasting path for other consoles.

There is an important destination qualification. The multistream guide describes Twitch as required, with YouTube, TikTok and Kick available as additional outputs; it says those additional services cannot be selected alone in that workflow. The documentation therefore supports a Twitch-based multistream setup, not a claim that Console can stream to YouTube, TikTok or Kick independently.
Setup and requirements to check
For Desktop
Install Streamlabs Desktop on a Windows or Mac computer, add the sources you need, and configure scenes, audio and destinations in the application. Streamlabs’ system-requirements page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and 8 GB RAM as minimums, and recommends 16 GB or more for demanding streams, animated overlays or advanced plugins. The same page has internally inconsistent recommended operating-system text, and newer quick-start material differs; check the live requirements page against your computer before buying or upgrading hardware.

For Console
- Configure scenes and supported widgets in Streamlabs Console through a browser.
- On Xbox, open the Twitch app and select Streamlabs as the streaming destination, following Streamlabs’ current Console setup instructions.
- Connect a headset microphone to the controller if you need commentary. Add a supported webcam through Xbox USB or the documented mobile-device camera route if desired.
- If you plan to multistream, keep Twitch in the workflow; the cited guide does not establish that the other listed destinations work as standalone outputs.
Cost and plan differences
Streamlabs’ comparison describes Desktop as free to download and use, with some features requiring Ultra. It identifies multistreaming, Stream Shift, premium overlays and the creator-tools suite among Ultra features. Streamlabs’ Console FAQ, published September 5, 2025, lists Console at $11 USD per month or $79.99 USD annually, a seven-day free trial, and inclusion with Ultra. These are the terms stated on that FAQ, not a live checkout confirmation; check Streamlabs’ current pricing and trial terms before subscribing.
For Xbox players, compare the subscription route with the hardware route: Console avoids a separate PC and capture card, while Desktop can give you a broader PC-based production workflow but may mean buying and managing capture hardware. A native console broadcast is another option if basic streaming is enough and you can do without Streamlabs overlays and alerts.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not
StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It is not a replacement for either Streamlabs product when you want to broadcast live gameplay, a camera feed, or an interactive gaming session. If your goal is instead to loop prerecorded video on YouTube while your computer is off, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
Every slot uses one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free without a card. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream at their original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
Common decision mistakes
- Buying capture hardware before choosing the workflow: a capture card is relevant to bringing console gameplay into Desktop, not required for Console.
- Assuming Console supports any console: Streamlabs’ FAQ identifies Xbox as the supported console and says PlayStation and Switch are unsupported.
- Assuming a standalone YouTube Console stream is documented: the multistream guide requires Twitch and presents other destinations as additions, not independent choices.
- Expecting to plug a separate mic into Console: the FAQ specifies a controller-connected headset mic and says a separate external microphone is unsupported.
- Choosing from old hardware examples: verify current compatibility and requirements for your own console and PC before purchasing a capture card or upgrading a computer.
