Streamlabs Desktop YouTube Stream Bitrate for 1080p Prerecorded Videos

For prerecorded video sent through Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube Live, choose bitrate by outgoing frame rate and codec: 14/17 Mbps for H.264 or 10/12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p30/60.

If Streamlabs Desktop is sending a prerecorded program to YouTube as a live broadcast, use YouTube’s live-encoding recommendations—not its standard video-upload bitrates. For 1080p30, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps with H.264 or 10 Mbps with AV1/H.265; for 1080p60, it recommends 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265. These are recommended targets, not guaranteed results: choose a bitrate your connection can sustain and test the actual stream.

Choose the bitrate for the outgoing live stream

The right bitrate depends on the frame rate and codec Streamlabs sends to YouTube. “1080p” by itself is not enough to choose a setting. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, as listed in its live encoder settings guidance accessed in 2026, are:

Live ingest codec 1080p30 1080p60
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum
H.264 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum

The minimum values are not the recommended targets. When your connection can reliably handle the recommended rate, use it; do not treat the minimum as equivalent quality guidance. If you are unsure which codec Streamlabs is sending, check its output/encoder configuration rather than assuming that the prerecorded file’s format determines the live ingest codec.

Set the other live-encoder options

Bitrate is only one part of YouTube’s live guidance. For a 1080p live program, check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo.
  • Picture format: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR.

These are live-ingest recommendations, not a promise that every Streamlabs configuration exposes the same labels or controls. Streamlabs’ current exact workflow for adding, looping, or scheduling a prerecorded file is not established here, so use Streamlabs’ current interface documentation for those steps rather than relying on assumed menu paths.

Do not use the ordinary upload bitrate for a live broadcast

A prerecorded video remains a live stream for bitrate purposes when it is played out through Streamlabs into YouTube Live. YouTube’s separate upload encoding settings apply when you upload the file as a regular YouTube video instead. For SDR uploads, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps. Those upload values should not replace the live table above.

Make sure your connection can hold the chosen rate

The bitrate is the outgoing video data rate, not the total upload capacity your connection should have available. Other network use and connection fluctuations can leave too little headroom, producing dropped frames or an unstable broadcast. Streamlabs describes a rough planning rule of using about 80% of measured upload speed, but it is not a guarantee; a reliable test under conditions similar to the actual stream is more useful than assuming a single speed test proves stability.

  1. Check stable upload capacity. Test the connection you will use for the broadcast, preferably at the same location and during comparable network use.
  2. Leave room for variation. Do not plan to consume all measured upload bandwidth with the stream bitrate. Avoid competing uploads and downloads where possible.
  3. Test the full setup before going live. Include audio and motion similar to the program you plan to send; a static scene may not reveal problems that appear during busier video.
  4. Watch YouTube stream health. Check the live control room’s health indicator and messages during the test and the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Streamlabs Desktop also has a dynamic bitrate feature that can adjust bitrate when frames drop. It may help respond to changing network conditions, but it does not make an inadequate or unstable connection reliable. Streamlabs’ general setup article includes bitrate examples specifically for Twitch; for YouTube, use YouTube’s platform-specific recommendations instead.

Troubleshoot common bitrate problems

  • Dropped frames or unstable stream: The connection may not sustain the selected rate, or other traffic may be competing for upload capacity. Test again, reduce competing network use, and select a rate that remains stable. If using Streamlabs’ dynamic bitrate option, monitor whether it helps rather than assuming it fixes the cause.
  • The video looks softer than expected: Confirm that the outgoing resolution and frame rate are actually 1080p30 or 1080p60 as intended, and that you selected the recommendation for the codec being sent. A 1080p label alone does not identify the correct bitrate.
  • You chose the minimum value: YouTube lists minimums as well as recommendations. If you need the recommended target and your connection can sustain it, use the recommended column rather than treating the minimum as the target.
  • You are uploading the file, not broadcasting it: Use YouTube’s upload encoding guidance for a standard upload. The live bitrate table applies only when the program is sent through YouTube Live.
  • Stream health reports a problem: Review YouTube’s health messages and retest the complete audio/video path before the next broadcast; a successful local preview does not establish that the outgoing stream is healthy.
