If Streamlabs Desktop shows a black screen, blank canvas, or the wrong window after you add Game Capture, start by recreating the source and testing the game in borderless mode. Then check permissions, capture mode, anti-cheat compatibility, and overlays. If only one game fails, it may be a title-specific limitation—not a Windows 11 fault.
First, identify what is failing
These fixes are for a Windows PC game added as a Game Capture source in Streamlabs Desktop. Check the Sources list first: make sure the source is visible (the eye icon is on), is not covered by another source, and fits inside the canvas. If the problem is a console or second PC connected by HDMI, skip to Streamlabs’ capture-card troubleshooting guide; that setup uses a Video Capture Device source and has different causes, such as a device conflict or HDCP.
Streamlabs Desktop’s official page lists Windows 10 and later, which includes Windows 11. That does not mean Windows 11 is necessarily the cause: the game’s display mode, capture hook, permissions, overlays, drivers, or GPU setup may be responsible. Windows’ ordinary app-permission lists do not provide one universal screen-recording switch for traditional desktop apps, so changing privacy settings is not a reliable first fix.

- Restart the game and Streamlabs Desktop.
- Remove and recreate the Game Capture source.
- Run Streamlabs Desktop as administrator for a test.
- Try Auto Game Capture, then Capture Specific Window.
- Toggle the anti-cheat compatibility option and restart the game.
- Temporarily disable third-party overlays.
- Switch the game from exclusive fullscreen to borderless fullscreen or windowed mode.
- Try Window Capture, then Display Capture, if Game Capture still fails.
These are reversible tests, so try them before reinstalling software or resetting settings. Streamlabs’ black-screen troubleshooting guide recommends several of these steps, including recreating the source, administrator mode, checking overlays, and changing display mode.

1. Recreate Game Capture and select the game correctly
- Open the scene where you want the gameplay to appear. In Sources, remove the existing Game Capture source. Removing it from the scene is different from hiding it; a hidden source can simply be toggled back on, but recreating a troublesome source gives you a clean configuration.
- Close the game and Streamlabs Desktop. If Streamlabs remains open, close it fully before continuing.
- Right-click the Streamlabs Desktop shortcut and choose Run as administrator for this test.
- Launch the game, then add a new Game Capture source to the correct scene.
- Choose Auto Game Capture if it is available. If that does not find the game, choose Capture Specific Window and select the game itself—not just its launcher.
Streamlabs presents Auto Game Capture as its preferred automatic gameplay-detection workflow. See its Auto Game Capture instructions for the current interface. If the game does not appear in the window list, restart both applications and try again after the game is running. Launchers and games can use separate processes, so selecting the launcher may not capture gameplay.
Also check source order and framing. A source can be working but obscured by another full-screen source, placed outside the canvas, or transformed to an unusable size. Select it and use the available transform controls to bring it back into view.
2. Test administrator mode—without making it a permanent rule
Some games, including certain Windows Store titles, need additional permissions for capture. Streamlabs recommends installing to the default Program Files location and running Streamlabs Desktop as administrator when Game Capture fails. Close Streamlabs completely, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator; then recreate the source and test.

If it helps, note the difference in privilege level. Running both a game and streaming software with elevated permissions all the time has security and convenience implications; do not elevate applications permanently without a reason.
3. Toggle anti-cheat compatibility
Some anti-cheat systems or protected rendering paths can interfere with capture hooks. Open the Game Capture source’s properties and test the anti-cheat compatibility option in its other state: if it is on, turn it off; if it is off, turn it on. Restart the game after changing the setting, because capture hooks are often initialized when the game launches.

This option is not a way to bypass anti-cheat, and it will not work with every title. Follow the game publisher’s rules. Do not disable the game’s anti-cheat or other security protections to force capture.
4. Disable overlays temporarily
Overlays can compete with or interfere with the hooks used by capture software. As an isolation test, disable nonessential overlays, restart the game, and check the preview again. Possible candidates include:
- NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience in-game overlay
- Discord overlay
- Steam overlay
- Ubisoft Connect or EA app overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner overlays
- Other recording, performance-monitoring, or RGB utilities
Streamlabs also identifies overlays as a possible source of game instability or performance problems in its game-crashes and FPS troubleshooting guide. An overlay is not automatically the culprit: if capture works after disabling them, re-enable them one at a time to find the conflict. Avoid broadly turning off antivirus or other security software.
5. Change the game’s display mode
Exclusive fullscreen is a common compatibility boundary for capture software. In the game’s display settings, test these modes in order:
- Borderless fullscreen: Often easier to capture and alt-tab from, though latency or performance can differ from exclusive fullscreen.
- Windowed: Useful for isolating the problem, but may show the desktop around the game and feel less immersive.
After changing modes, refresh or recreate the capture source. If the game is visible in a regular window but Game Capture remains blank, try Window Capture. Streamlabs also recommends testing borderless fullscreen or Window Capture for this kind of problem.

6. Pick the fallback source that fits

| Display Capture | An emergency fallback when the game is not captured by the other methods. | Captures notifications and other windows, so protect private information. It can show a recursive preview if Streamlabs’ own window is on the captured display, and may add GPU or compositor overhead. |
If you use Display Capture, hide or move the Streamlabs window so the preview does not capture itself. Before going live, check that notifications, messages, and unrelated windows will not be visible.
7. If you are on a laptop, check the two-GPU setup
Many laptops have integrated graphics and a separate NVIDIA or AMD GPU. If Streamlabs Desktop and the game run on different GPUs, capture may be blank or unavailable. Test whether both applications can use the same GPU, then retest Game Capture. The precise graphics-assignment controls vary by system and Windows build, so use the current Windows or GPU-manufacturer instructions for your device rather than relying on an outdated menu path.
If matching the GPUs does not help, try Window Capture or Display Capture. Also test administrator mode as described above. A laptop-specific failure is a reason to check GPU assignment; it is not by itself proof that the graphics hardware is faulty.

Update Streamlabs Desktop through its current application update process or by downloading the installer from the official Streamlabs Desktop page. Do not assume an update fixes a specific capture problem unless Streamlabs says so in a relevant release note. Updating Windows and the GPU driver is most useful if the failure began after a system, game, or driver update, or other GPU-accelerated apps are also misbehaving.
If Streamlabs is crashing, will not add sources, or has wider problems beyond one game, Streamlabs’ crash troubleshooting guide recommends additional repairs, including the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and, where appropriate, DirectX. Get runtimes only from Microsoft, and drivers from the GPU manufacturer. Restart after installing a runtime. Avoid random DLL downloads, third-party driver cleaners, and broad security exclusions.

What the symptom suggests

When only one game fails
Test a second game with the same scene and capture settings. If other games work, the problem is more likely tied to that title’s rendering mode, anti-cheat behavior, or capture compatibility than to Windows 11 as a whole. Streamlabs notes that some games may not be reliably capturable with Game Capture; it gives Destiny 2 as an example. Test borderless/windowed mode, then Window Capture or Display Capture, and check the game publisher’s rules for streaming and overlays. There may not be a universal fix.
Reset Streamlabs only as a late-stage step
If multiple scenes or sources are broken, settings may be damaged. Back up or export your scene collections first. Then close Streamlabs Desktop fully, press Win + R, enter %appdata%, and rename the slobs-client folder to something like slobs-client-backup. Start Streamlabs and test with a clean scene.
Renaming preserves a path back if the reset does not help. Do not delete the folder casually: Streamlabs identifies it as a user-data location, and resetting it can remove settings, scenes, and login-related configuration. Its support repository documents the location and related troubleshooting. If the application itself is malfunctioning broadly, reinstall using the official current installer rather than unofficial repair utilities.
When to use another capture setup
OBS Studio is a free, open-source alternative with official Windows 10 and 11 support. It can help determine whether the issue is specific to Streamlabs Desktop. However, switching software may not solve a game-level restriction or a rendering path that blocks capture hooks; both programs need a compatible way to receive the image.

It adds cables, device and USB considerations, possible HDCP complications, and cost. It is usually unnecessary for a single Windows PC when Window Capture or Display Capture works, and it does not guarantee that a protected or incompatible game can be captured. Streamlabs’ basic streaming and recording features are free; paying for Ultra is not a fix for a black Game Capture source.
If none of the methods work
Make one clean test scene with a single capture source. Confirm the game is rendering locally, then compare preview, a short recording, and live output separately. Note whether the fault affects every game or just one, along with your Streamlabs version, GPU model, laptop or desktop status, game display mode, and enabled overlays. Keep that information before reinstalling or resetting anything, and use Streamlabs’ support or diagnostic-upload workflow to investigate the remaining failure.
