Neither StreamYard nor Riverside is the better choice for every live-streaming workflow. StreamYard is easier to assess if your priority is producing a branded live show and sending it to several destinations; Riverside is a stronger fit to investigate if you mainly record interviews or podcasts as separate tracks for editing. Choose by the features and billing terms on the plan you need, not by a universal winner.
Which platform fits your live-streaming workflow?
| Your priority | What to compare | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Going live to several platforms | Destination count, supported platforms, custom RTMP, and the plan that includes them | StreamYard’s Help Center lists destination limits by plan. Riverside’s own comparison makes broader multistream claims, so verify that your required platforms and destinations are supported on the tier you would buy. |
| Producing a branded live show | Layouts, overlays, branding, guest and host limits, backstage or producer workflow, and audience comments | Compare StreamYard’s plan and help details against the number of people and show elements you need. Confirm the corresponding Riverside features and plan directly. |
| Recording interviews or podcasts to edit later | Separate tracks, recording-hour allowance, local or cloud capture, editing tools, and storage | Riverside’s pricing page specifies multitrack recording-hour allowances and editing features by tier. StreamYard describes local recordings and saved broadcasts, with plan limits. |
| Keeping spending predictable | Monthly versus annual billing, plan limits, promotional pricing, and renewal terms | Compare the same billing period and the lowest plan that actually supplies your required features. Both plan details can change; StreamYard explicitly notes that promotions and renewal terms may affect prices. |
These are workflow distinctions, not independent performance-test results. Riverside’s comparison page is published by Riverside, so treat its head-to-head claims as vendor claims rather than neutral benchmarking.

What to know about the free plans
StreamYard
StreamYard’s Help Center describes its free plan as limited to two hours of local recordings, with limited streaming and recording hours, five hours of recording storage, no multistreaming, and no automatic saving of livestreams. Its pricing page also notes limited storage and eligibility limits. Treat free access as a way to assess a restricted workflow, not as evidence that a paid feature is included.
Riverside
The pricing details used here establish paid Standard and Pro recording allowances. They do not establish the exact free-plan limits or whether a free tier includes the live-streaming functions you need. Check Riverside’s current plan page for those specifics.

How to make the choice
- Write down the job. Decide whether the main output is a live show reaching multiple destinations, or a multitrack recording intended for editing and reuse.
- List must-have features. Specify destinations, guest and host count, recording quality, separate tracks, editing, storage, and how long you expect to stream or record.
- Match requirements to a plan. Check the provider’s current plan page and help documentation. For StreamYard, verify destination count and free-plan limitations; for Riverside, verify multitrack hours and the exact streaming functions included.
- Compare equivalent billing. Put monthly prices against monthly prices or annual-billing prices against annual-billing prices. Include renewal and promotional terms, not just the initial displayed figure.
- Validate the workflow before committing. Confirm destination support, guest setup, recording access, editing needs, and any storage or hour limits using the current plan terms.
When a different tool is the better fit: 24/7 prerecorded YouTube
StreamYard and Riverside are not the only possible choices if your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos rather than host a live show or record an interview. For that specific job, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, keeping the YouTube stream running without a computer at home, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only service for prerecorded uploads; it does not replace StreamYard or Riverside for live camera-based shows or interview recording. Learn more at StreamNeo.
