If Street Fighter 6 flickers on your PS5, start by checking the HDMI connection, then test VRR, 120 Hz, HDR and video bandwidth one at a time. There is no clear official Capcom notice establishing a universal PS5 flickering bug in Street Fighter 6; Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 support hub and PS5-specific support route point toward general troubleshooting. These steps help distinguish a game-specific problem from an HDMI, display or console issue.
First, identify what kind of flicker you’re seeing
A short black screen as the game launches or closes can happen when the PS5 and display switch resolution, HDR, VRR or refresh-rate modes. That is different from repeated flashing during a match, persistent brightness pulsing or the display losing signal.
| Symptom | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Brief black screen at launch or exit | Check HDR, VRR, resolution and refresh-rate mode changes. |
| Persistent whole-screen flicker or “No Signal” | Check the cable, HDMI port, intermediary devices and signal settings. |
| Bright areas pulse, but the image stays visible | Test VRR, HDR and the display’s gaming or brightness processing. |
| Flicker only in Street Fighter 6 | Check the game update and installation after testing the display connection. |
| Flicker on the PS5 home screen or in other games | Prioritize the PS5’s video output, HDMI path, display and hardware. |
| Horizontal lines, colored blocks or distortion | Test another cable, port and display; these symptoms can point to the signal path or hardware. |
Change one setting at a time and launch the game to test it. Note the original setting so you can restore it if the change makes no difference.
Try these nine fixes, from simplest to most involved
1. Fully restart the PS5 and display
- Close Street Fighter 6.
- Turn the PS5 off completely, not into Rest Mode, and turn off the TV or monitor.
- Unplug both power cables for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the display first, then the PS5, and launch the game.
A full restart can clear a temporary HDMI handshake or mode-negotiation problem. It is a power cycle, not the Safe Mode option for clearing the system-software cache.

2. Update the game, console and display
Check for a Street Fighter 6 title update and current PS5 system software. Also check for firmware updates for the TV or monitor and, if they remain in the signal chain, a receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device. Updating before changing settings can address compatibility issues and gives you a consistent starting point for testing. Check Capcom’s official support hub for current game information; do not assume a particular update fixes flickering unless Capcom says so.
3. Reseat the HDMI cable and connect the PS5 directly
- Turn off the PS5 and display, then unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try the cable supplied with the PS5, or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display, temporarily bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter or capture device.
- Try the display’s HDMI input labeled for 4K/120 Hz, HDMI 2.1, Enhanced Format or VRR, as applicable to that model.
Sony identifies the cable, port, intermediary equipment and display firmware as possible factors in 4K/120 Hz output problems. A cable can appear fine at 4K/60 Hz yet fail intermittently at 4K/120 Hz, HDR or VRR, so success with another device does not fully rule it out. See Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide and picture and sound troubleshooting.
4. Turn off VRR temporarily
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR and select Off. If flicker continues, also test Apply to Unsupported Games set to Off.

Restart Street Fighter 6 and check whether the symptom changes. If it stops, VRR or the display’s VRR implementation is implicated, but that does not prove VRR is inherently incompatible with the game. If the problem appears only when VRR is active, check the display’s own VRR, FreeSync, G-Sync-compatible or gaming-mode settings too. If VRR makes no difference, restore it before moving on. Sony explains these options in its 4K resolution guide.

5. Turn off 120 Hz Output
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > 120 Hz Output and select Off, then restart the game. Sony recommends this as a troubleshooting step for video-output problems involving games or displays that use 120 Hz.
If the image becomes stable, test 120 Hz again with VRR still off. A problem that returns only at 120 Hz points toward a high-bandwidth compatibility issue involving the display, cable, port or its required HDMI settings. You can leave 120 Hz off while diagnosing, but doing so limits the display’s refresh-rate capability.

6. Test HDR settings
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. If HDR is set to Always On, change it to On When Supported and restart the game. If the flicker continues, test HDR Off.
Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR output; On When Supported uses HDR for compatible content. A brief blank while the display changes HDR modes is not automatically a fault. Persistent flashing or brightness pulsing is different; if disabling HDR stops it, check the display’s HDR mode, tone mapping and firmware. Sony describes the settings in its PS5 4K resolution guide.
7. Lower the Video Transfer Rate
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate. Leave it on Automatic unless flickering occurs; then test -1, followed by -2 if needed. Restart Street Fighter 6 after each change.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Sony specifically recommends -1 or -2 when the screen flickers. These settings reduce output bandwidth and can limit combinations such as 4K/120 Hz or some 4K/50–60 Hz RGB, YUV444 or Deep Color modes. If a reduced rate solves the issue, the signal path may be struggling with bandwidth or compatibility; treat the setting as a diagnostic compromise rather than assuming it is the ideal permanent output. Details are in Sony’s 4K resolution guide.
8. Test resolution and display picture settings
Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution, test Automatic, then a simpler output such as 1440p (if supported) or 1080p. You can also use Test 1440p Output to check supported SDR/HDR, 60 Hz and 120 Hz modes, and VRR when the console is set to 1440p.
On the TV or monitor, test one setting at a time: Game Mode on or off, VRR/FreeSync off, dynamic contrast or automatic brightness off, and motion interpolation off. Confirm the HDMI input is set to the manufacturer’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode when required, and install current display firmware. If the problem appears at 4K but not at 1080p, the high-bandwidth signal path is a more likely place to investigate than ordinary game rendering.

9. Use Safe Mode, then repair the game installation if needed
Safe Mode offers video-output and system-maintenance options. To enter it:
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- Hold the power button again and release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller by USB and press the PS button.
For a difficult-to-use picture, start with Change Video Output. Depending on the symptoms, other options include Repair Console Storage, Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database. These may help with system or storage problems, but they are not guaranteed display fixes. Avoid Reset PS5 or reinstalling system software unless PlayStation Support directs you to do so, and back up important data before any option that may erase it. Sony lists Safe Mode options and entry instructions in its Safe Mode guide.
If flickering is isolated to Street Fighter 6 after testing the PS5 and display, delete and reinstall the game, then let its updates finish before launching. Capcom’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance also covers restoring licenses and rebuilding the database when application data may be damaged. Deleting the game does not delete its save data, but its title updates must be downloaded again. To restore licenses, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses; this is especially relevant if the issue occurs with launch errors, missing content or access problems.

- Only at launch or exit: Test HDR set to On When Supported, then VRR off and 120 Hz off. A short mode-switch blackout may remain normal. If needed, test a direct HDMI connection and update the display firmware.
- Continuously during matches: Test VRR off, 120 Hz off, Video Transfer Rate at -1, HDR off, then a simpler resolution. Try a different HDMI cable and port if settings do not help.
- Also on the dashboard or in other games: Focus on the cable, HDMI port, direct connection, display firmware and PS5 video settings; then test another screen and Safe Mode. This makes an SF6-only explanation less likely.
- Only on one TV or monitor: Test another HDMI input and, if possible, another display before reinstalling the game. The affected screen’s port, firmware or processing becomes more suspect.
- Across multiple displays: The PS5, cable or system software becomes more suspect. If the issue remains in Safe Mode after basic output tests, seek PlayStation support or repair.
Distinguish a whole-screen signal dropout from image tearing during movement, shimmering on characters or textures, bright-area pulsing, and a visible change in the TV’s backlight. Those symptoms are not interchangeable. Poor ventilation or overheating is another possibility only when supported by other symptoms; flicker alone does not establish it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen to contact support
Contact PlayStation Support if the screen flickers in Safe Mode, the PS5 repeatedly loses signal across displays, or the problem persists with another cable and basic video-output changes. Crashes, overheating warnings, shutdowns or persistent image artifacts are additional reasons to stop changing settings and seek diagnosis. Warranty and repair options depend on your region, console model and coverage.
If the problem occurs only in Street Fighter 6 after the PS5 and display path have been tested, contact Capcom Street Fighter 6 support and describe when the flicker occurs and which display settings affect it.
