Ryu is a Japanese martial artist and one of the central characters in Capcom’s Street Fighter series. He travels the world to improve as a fighter and become what Capcom calls a “true warrior”; in the series’ Street Fighter V-era profile, he is also confronting the dangerous power known as the Satsui no Hado within himself.
What is Ryu’s fighting style?
Capcom’s Street Fighter V-era character guide describes Ryu’s style as martial arts based on Ansatsuken. That guide also lists Japan as his birthplace, a July 21 birthday, a height of 175 cm and a weight of 85 kg. It gives martial arts and red bean jelly as things he likes, and spiders as something he dislikes. The profile does not state a birth year.
Descriptions vary across official game materials. A Capcom-published Marvel vs. Capcom 3 manual says his Ansatsuken-based style blends elements of karate, judo and taekwondo, and that he can use spiritual energy. An older Nintendo manual for Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting calls him a Shotokan karate student. These are descriptions from particular game-era sources, not a single label that should be applied without qualification to every appearance.
Why does Ryu travel and fight?
Ryu’s defining goal is personal mastery, not fame or a settled career. Capcom’s guide says he “travels the globe in search of the path towards becoming a true warrior.” Training and testing himself against other fighters are central to that journey.

- Detailed figure from Street Fighter
- Comes in a collectible, branding packingSpecifications
- Has articulated arms and legs
- Officially licensed product
A Capcom-published manual gives a more specific account: after defeating the Muay Thai king, Ryu wanders rather than claiming fame. That passage belongs to the manual’s biographical account and should not be treated as a complete chronology for every game.
What is the Satsui no Hado?
In Capcom’s Street Fighter V-era character guide, the Satsui no Hado is a dangerous power manifesting within Ryu. He recognizes the threat and seeks answers so he can face it directly. The guide also places him against Necalli in Street Fighter V. These details describe that game-era framing; they do not establish Ryu’s latest story status across the series.

When did Ryu first appear in Street Fighter?
Capcom’s character manual lists Ryu’s first appearance as Street Fighter (1987). Capcom’s character guide calls him the face of the franchise since its beginning. Together, those official descriptions establish him as a foundational character in the series.
Ryu’s profile and story details can differ by game and publication. The sources cited here establish his debut and explain his Street Fighter V-era character framing, but they do not provide a complete account of his current story in Street Fighter 6.
