Subnautica 2 is out in Early Access. Unknown Worlds originally planned to release it in 2025, then delayed it to 2026. Early Access began May 14, 2026, at 08:00 PDT (15:00 UTC). The game is an underwater survival adventure for PC and Xbox, with solo play or optional online co-op for up to four players total.
Is Subnautica 2 out yet?
Yes. Unknown Worlds launched Subnautica 2 in Early Access on May 14, 2026. The current official game page lists Early Access update news, including the Buddy System update and later hotfixes, as of October 8, 2026. That means this is an actively updated Early Access game, not a finished 1.0 release. See the official Subnautica 2 page for current update information.
The date often associated with the game comes from its original announcement: at the October 17, 2024 Xbox Partner Preview, Unknown Worlds said it was targeting 2025 for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC through Xbox Game Preview. That was a plan, not the eventual launch date. The original announcement also said the game would be available on Game Pass on day one.
Why was Subnautica 2 delayed?
Unknown Worlds later moved the Early Access launch to 2026. The developer said it wanted to improve areas identified before launch, respond to community feedback, and include more content in the initial Early Access release. It specifically named additional biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story material, and creatures. Those are the studio’s stated reasons for the delay, not an independent assessment of the game’s development or quality. The announcement is in Unknown Worlds’ Early Access update.

What is Subnautica 2?
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure set on a new alien world. You play as a Pioneer aboard the colony ship CICADA. After an incident leaves you stranded, the ship’s AI insists that the mission continue. The official description highlights exploring biomes, studying creatures, crafting tools, building and customizing bases, and piloting the Tadpole submersible. Can you play Subnautica 2 with friends?
Yes. You can play solo or invite up to three friends for online co-op, for a maximum of four players. Xbox Wire’s May 4, 2026 feature says cross-platform invites let players invite Xbox friends and friends on other platforms through the in-game menu. Where can you play it, and how much did it cost at launch?
Unknown Worlds’ launch announcement linked to Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox. The original announcement identified Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S as platforms, and said Game Pass access would be available on day one. Catalog inclusion and storefront availability can vary by time and region, so check the relevant store or Game Pass catalog for current access.
The developer announced a launch price of $29.99 USD for Early Access and said storefront pricing would be localized by region. That is the announced launch figure, not a guarantee of today’s price in your country. Unknown Worlds said one purchase would cover additions, updates, and hotfixes through the 1.0 launch and beyond.
