Subnautica 2 was delayed because Unknown Worlds said community playtests identified areas that needed work before the first Early Access release. The studio announced on July 9, 2025 that launch would move to 2026, giving the team more time to respond to feedback and add content. The game was not canceled: it launched in Early Access on May 14, 2026.
Why was Subnautica 2 delayed?
Unknown Worlds said playtests had shown that parts of the game needed improvement before it was ready for its first Early Access release. The studio described the additional time as an opportunity to act on more player feedback—not a change in the game’s direction or the team behind it.
The developer also said it planned to use the delay to add more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story content, and creatures. In other words, its stated explanation combined polishing areas that playtesters had flagged with expanding what players would find in the initial Early Access version.

Was the delay really about a $250 million bonus?
That explanation is a contested allegation, not an established account of the delay’s motive. Reporting connected the dispute between publisher Krafton and Unknown Worlds leadership to a possible $250 million performance bonus and disagreements over how much content the Early Access build should include. Those reports do not establish that Krafton delayed the game to avoid paying the bonus.

A 2026 Delaware Chancery opinion addressed a separate, more specific question: the court found that Krafton had breached its agreement by terminating key employees without valid cause, and ordered that Ted Gill’s operational authority over the Early Access launch be restored. The opinion extended the base earnout testing period to September 15, 2026, with a contractual possibility of extension to March 15, 2027. Those court findings concern contractual conduct and leadership authority; they do not, by themselves, prove the disputed claim about why the delay happened.
Did Subnautica 2 get canceled, and when did it come out?
No. The 2025 announcement moved the planned Early Access release to 2026; it did not announce a cancellation. Unknown Worlds later set the launch for May 14, 2026, at 08:00 PDT (15:00 UTC). Early Access began on that date.

Where can you play it, and is it playable now?
As of September 27, 2026, Subnautica 2 is available in Early Access on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox/Microsoft Store. It can be played solo or in co-op with up to three friends, for a maximum of four players.
The April 30, 2026 launch announcement listed a $29.99 USD Early Access price. Store prices are localized, so the price shown in your region may differ. The game is an evolving Early Access release, not a finished version: Unknown Worlds continued development after launch, including with the July 8 Adaptive Measures update, which documented quality-of-life, gameplay, performance, and community-feedback changes.

What should you know about the Experimental branch?
On August 12, 2026, Unknown Worlds introduced an opt-in Experimental branch on Steam and Xbox for players who want to preview builds before they reach the main branch. Experimental versions may contain game-breaking bugs, and saves do not transfer between Experimental and the main branch. Treat it as a separate, less stable preview—not as a required way to play the released Early Access game.

Unknown Worlds said one purchase covers Early Access additions, updates, and hotfixes through and beyond version 1.0. The announced launch price was $29.99 USD, with regional pricing set locally by storefronts. The most important trade-off is timing: buying now means access to a game that is still being developed, with ongoing changes and the possibility of bugs, rather than a promise that every part of the finished experience is already in place.
