Super Mario 64 Maker is a fan-made ROM hack that puts a 3D level editor inside Super Mario 64. You can place and adjust objects, switch themes and music, then start a stage to test it. It is a community project by Kaze Emanuar, not an official Nintendo editor or standalone game.
What Super Mario 64 Maker lets you do
The editor is controlled with a gamepad. Kaze Emanuar’s release video describes selecting, moving, copying and pasting objects, changing their properties, and scaling or rotating them. Players can also change a level’s theme and music, then launch it to try out the result. A 2017 report by ComicBook.com likewise describes placing items, changing their size and dimensions, testing stages and saving a file to share.

The result is a way to build custom 3D Mario stages using the original game’s world and building blocks—not a general-purpose level editor. SMMDB’s FAQ describes making courses with 3D blocks and enemies: SMMDB FAQ.
What you need to run it
This is a ROM hack patch, so it is applied to a copy of the base game rather than installed as a self-contained official release. Kaze’s release description specifies a Super Mario 64 US .z64 ROM as the patch target, stating: “Patch the downloaded file on your Super Mario 64 US.z64 rom!” Kaze Emanuar’s release video

A 2017 setup article from Gamereactor France lists an emulator, a ROM and an N64 controller among the setup requirements. In practical terms, you need an emulator that can run the patched game and accept controller input; the available sources do not verify particular current emulator versions, operating systems or controller models. A compatible gamepad may be useful, but no specific model is established as supported. Obtain the base game through lawful means; the patch is not the game itself.
How level sharing works
The creator’s stated method is to save an emulator state and upload it. SMMDB documents a more specific community workflow: upload a compressed course or save-state file, then load downloaded courses through the emulator’s load-state function. Its course collection lists Super Mario 64 Maker courses, and its FAQ explains how to use the site with the hack.

Because courses are shared through save states, they depend on the emulator’s state-loading workflow rather than being ordinary standalone level files. The sources describe that process but do not establish compatibility across current emulator versions.
