SuperStation One Retro Console Supports Real PS1 Controllers, Games, and Memory Cards

SuperStation One can use original PS1 controllers and physical memory cards through its MiSTer PlayStation core, but SNAC is core-specific and memory-card slots can be selective. Here is how setup, game loading and troubleshooting work.

Yes—but with important limits. SuperStation One can run the MiSTer PlayStation core, connect original PlayStation controllers through built-in SNAC ports, and read or write physical PS1 memory cards. Controllers are generally the stronger part of the experience; physical memory-card compatibility can depend on card condition, design, firmware and configuration. Digital game files are the normal loading method, while disc support depends on the exact SuperDock or other hardware bundle.

What the SuperStation One actually is

SuperStation One is a MiSTer FPGA console, not a Sony PlayStation motherboard. Its Intel Cyclone V FPGA recreates supported systems in logic and can run multiple MiSTer cores. The enclosure and front connectors emphasize PlayStation use, while HDMI and legacy video options serve both modern displays and CRT setups. See the hardware overview and independent review for model and package details.

That distinction matters: it is designed to reproduce PlayStation behavior, but it is not an official Sony product, an original Sony optical drive, or a guaranteed clone of every PlayStation hardware revision.

What “real PS1 support” means

Original controllers use SNAC

The two front PlayStation-style ports use SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) hardware. SNAC connects a physical accessory directly to the FPGA core rather than translating it through a generic USB adapter. This is intended to provide authentic protocol handling and very low-latency input.

VILCORN Retro Game Console with 5000 Games, 4K HDMI-Compatible Plug and Play TV Game System, Built-in 16-Bit & 8-Bit Classic Games, Retro Gaming Machine with Dual Controllers, Nostalgic Gift
  • Plug & Play Old School Game Console: Pre-loaded with 8-bit & 16-bit nostalgic classic games — no downloads, no installations, just plug in and play. Built for retro lovers who appreciate the golden age of gaming, it faithfully recreates the original pixel-art visuals and sound of that era. Please note: the graphics reflect the authentic old school style of classic consoles, which differs from today's HD or modern AAA titles — and that's exactly the charm.

SNAC is core-specific. A genuine PS1 pad can work in the PlayStation core yet fail to navigate the main MiSTer menu or control another installed core. Keep a USB or Bluetooth controller, or a keyboard, available for menus and systems that do not implement these ports.

Exact controller setup

  1. Launch the MiSTer PlayStation core.
  2. Press the console’s Eject/Menu button to open the core menu.
  3. Set Pad1 to SNAC-port1 and, when using a second pad, set Pad2 to SNAC-port2.
  4. Return to the game and test the controller. For USB or Bluetooth devices, choose the relevant emulated controller type instead of a SNAC port.

Menu names and behavior can change as the firmware and core are updated, so check the SuperStation documentation if your labels differ.

Electrical connection is not a universal guarantee. The active core must implement the device, and the game must support that accessory. GunCon play also depends on a compatible game and an appropriate video/display connection. Reports from Seafoam Gaming and Time Extension describe these capabilities as part of the configured PlayStation experience, not as system-wide input support.

Can it use a real PS1 memory card?

Physical cards

Yes. In the PlayStation core menu, set SNAC Memcard to Real. The core can then read and write a card in the console’s memory-card interface, allowing existing saves to be used instead of starting with an empty virtual card.

Virtual cards

The core can also use virtual memory cards stored with the game or core files. Independent testing found virtual cards more dependable when a physical card was not recognized. They are the practical fallback for routine play, while physical cards are useful when you need access to an existing save.

Why a card may fail

  • Worn or loose Sony cards can fail in these slots even when they still work in an original PS1 or PS2.
  • Some third-party shells have slightly different dimensions or contact alignment.
  • High-capacity products such as MemCard Pro-type devices have been reported as especially troublesome.
  • SNAC Memcard may still be set to a virtual or disabled mode.
  • Results can vary with firmware revisions and hardware batches.

Seafoam Gaming documented slot and card problems in its memory-card report. Treat “supports memory cards” as supported functionality, not a promise that every physical design will work flawlessly.

Safer testing procedure

  1. Back up important saves before experimenting.
  2. Set SNAC Memcard to Real.
  3. Start with a known-good, tightly assembled original Sony card.
  4. Clean contacts safely and avoid forcing the card into the slot.
  5. Test the card in an original PlayStation or PS2, if available, then try a second card to separate a card fault from a console-slot fault.
  6. Use a virtual card if physical detection remains unreliable.

A multitap can be a workaround for some cards, but only games that support multitaps can use that arrangement, and some high-capacity cards may still have power or compatibility limits.

How PS1 games load

SD-card files

The standard workflow is the MiSTer PlayStation core loading legally obtained or personally dumped game files from storage, together with any required BIOS material. Configured packages may include homebrew, but the default software does not include a copyrighted commercial PS1 library. The official documentation covers file placement and setup.

  • Experience immersive audio when the game software allows: Experience the game's audio with the built-in 8W speaker, designed to provide clear and dynamic sound. While the original game design may have audio limitations, you can also enjoy a personalized audio experience with your own headphones using the 3.5mm jack.

Original discs

Reports describe booting original discs through compatible additional disc hardware, including SuperDock-related setups. Do not assume that every base SuperStation One includes a drive. Confirm whether a listing is for the console alone or a bundle with the required disc hardware, and verify firmware support before buying for disc use. Community setup discussion is documented at this Reddit thread; launch-era coverage is at Yahoo Tech.

“Supports PS1 games” therefore covers at least two distinct paths: SD-loaded files on the base system and disc loading through a compatible accessory path. It does not mean a retail game collection is supplied.

SuperStation One versus an original PlayStation

Area SuperStation One Original PlayStation
Hardware basis MiSTer FPGA recreation using an Intel Cyclone V Original Sony hardware
Game loading SD-card files; discs only with the appropriate additional hardware Native optical discs
Controllers Original peripherals through core-specific SNAC ports; USB/Bluetooth for general input Native controller ports across the system
Memory cards Real cards when configured, plus virtual cards; physical-slot compatibility can be selective Native slots, generally more predictable with original cards
Video HDMI and legacy-output options, depending on model and accessories Original analog output, subject to display and cable compatibility
Setup Requires cores, BIOS files, storage organization and input settings Insert a disc and connect accessories

The SuperStation One adds modern display support, digital loading and access to other MiSTer systems. An original PlayStation remains the simpler choice when native discs and dependable physical-card behavior matter more than flexibility.

Who should buy it?

Good fit

  • PS1 owners who want to keep using original controllers or existing saves.
  • FPGA and MiSTer users who also want other console cores.
  • CRT owners or players who value legacy video options.
  • Buyers comfortable managing BIOS files, SD storage and core menus.

Poor fit

  • Anyone expecting a turnkey Sony-style console with games included.
  • Buyers who require every memory card to work immediately.
  • Players who want a physical PS1 controller to operate every menu and every core.
  • Anyone assuming the base unit includes a disc drive without checking the bundle.

A review cited an approximately $210 price at publication, but that is a 2026 review-era reference rather than a guaranteed current selling price. Package contents, firmware and accessories should be confirmed with the seller.

When a controller or memory card does not work

Controller checklist

  1. Confirm the PlayStation core is running.
  2. Open its menu with Eject/Menu.
  3. Assign the correct pad to SNAC-port1 or SNAC-port2.
  4. Reseat the connector and test in a compatible PS1 game.
  5. Use USB/Bluetooth input for menus.
  6. For specialty devices, confirm that the game supports the accessory.

Memory-card checklist

  1. Set SNAC Memcard to Real.
  2. Try a known-good standard Sony card.
  3. Inspect contacts and test the card on original hardware.
  4. Try another card and back up saves before more testing.
  5. Switch to a virtual card if the physical slot remains unreliable.
  6. Consider a multitap workaround only for a game that supports multitaps.

The central buying decision is not whether the SuperStation One can run PS1 software—it can—but whether you value direct original-accessory support enough to accept MiSTer configuration and conditional physical memory-card compatibility.
