You can connect them, but the reviewed Switchboard plan information lists “24/7 Streams” as an Enterprise feature without establishing an uptime guarantee or automatic recovery. OBS: production and encoding
OBS Studio is the application that assembles scenes and sources—such as images, audio, a camera, a browser, a desktop, or pre-recorded video—and encodes the outgoing feed. Its media source can be configured to repeat, making a looping-video workflow possible. That capability alone does not establish unattended restart or recovery if OBS, the computer, or the connection fails. Switchboard’s OBS integration guide describes the relevant sources and setup.
Switchboard Live: routing and destination management
Switchboard sits between an encoder and destinations. Its onboarding guide describes connecting an encoder feed and sending it to platforms; it says a single feed can go to unlimited platforms simultaneously. Switchboard can therefore add value when you need multistream distribution, destination controls, team access, or archives, rather than replacing OBS as the production and encoding application. How to connect OBS to Switchboard
- Prepare OBS. Configure the scenes and sources that should appear in the stream. For pre-recorded video, add a media source and enable repeat if you want it to loop. Switchboard’s integration guide suggests “veryfast” for CPU usage in its encoder walkthrough; treat that as version- and system-sensitive guidance, not a universal best setting.
- Get the Switchboard connection details. In Switchboard, create or configure the broadcast and copy its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose a custom service, then paste Switchboard’s stream URL and key into the corresponding fields. Exact labels may vary by OBS version. Switchboard’s OBS setup guide documents this connection.
- Choose encoder output settings. Switchboard recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and 30 or 60 fps in its setup materials. Select bitrate according to your available upload speed and the requirements of each destination; check current YouTube guidance before committing to a resolution, bitrate, and frame rate. - Test the feed before going live. Start streaming from OBS to Switchboard, then check that the confidence monitor shows video and a receiving/healthy state. Switchboard says this test connection does not itself push video live to destinations.
- Start the destination. Once the feed looks right, start YouTube in Switchboard, either along with other destinations or individually. To stop, Switchboard’s setup guidance says to stop the encoder first, then stop destination streams as needed. Initial setup instructions.
Settings and operational checks for an always-on stream
Bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes
- Rate control: CBR is Switchboard’s recommendation in its setup guide.
- Keyframes: Switchboard recommends a two-second interval.
- Frame rate: Its guide suggests 30 or 60 fps; use a rate appropriate to the source and current destination requirements.
- Bitrate: Switchboard says to adapt it to upload capacity and destination requirements. A setting that exceeds the sustained upstream bandwidth can cause dropped frames or an unstable feed. Confirm the current YouTube specification for the selected output rather than treating a vendor walkthrough as a permanent universal value.
- Encoder preset: “veryfast” appears in Switchboard’s OBS walkthrough. Performance depends on the machine and encoder, so verify that the chosen configuration can encode reliably before leaving it unattended.
Plan for failure, not just a successful test
A confidence-monitor check confirms that a feed is arriving during the test; it does not establish what happens hours later after a computer restart, encoder crash, network interruption, or destination disconnect. The reviewed Switchboard pages do not define an uptime SLA, failover behavior, encoder restart automation, or recovery after an interrupted connection. For a true 24/7 requirement, get those terms in writing and decide who will monitor and restart the encoder and destinations.
Check YouTube’s rules for your content and stream
Before leaving a loop online, verify YouTube’s current live-stream and archive rules, including any duration constraints relevant to your setup. Use video, music, and other material you have the rights to stream; a technically successful feed does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted work. Reused or repetitive content can also affect channel monetization eligibility, so review YouTube’s current monetization policies if earning revenue is part of the plan. The reviewed Switchboard materials do not establish YouTube’s current maximum continuous-stream duration or archive behavior for this configuration.
