Then check audio at the source and encoder, inspect Switchboard’s receiving status, and read YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message. A picture in Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor confirms video is reaching the workflow; it does not, by itself, confirm that audio is present.
Start by checking who can hear the stream
Ask whether the silence affects one viewer, viewers on one shared network, or viewers on different networks. This quickly separates a playback problem from a problem earlier in the stream path.
- One viewer: If you and other viewers hear sound, start with that viewer’s YouTube player, device, browser, or internet connection. YouTube says a problem affecting one viewer is probably on that viewer’s computer or connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explains this distinction.
- Viewers on one shared network: Ask someone on a different connection to check. If they hear audio, investigate the shared network or the affected devices before changing the encoder.
- Viewers on different networks: If multiple people report silence, check the audio source, routing, and encoder output. A problem common to viewers on separate connections is more likely to be in the stream path than in each viewer’s playback settings.
Trace the audio from its source to the encoder
Before changing Switchboard settings, confirm that the intended sound is being produced and reaches the encoder. For a game stream, that means checking the game or console audio and the audio source selected in the streaming software; for a microphone or mixer, check the relevant input and its physical controls.
Check the source and OBS mixer
- Make sure the expected microphone, game, desktop, or mixer source is selected and active.
- In OBS, look at the Audio Mixer while the source is producing sound. The correct source should show meter activity and should not be muted.
- Check the source fader and any physical gain control on the microphone, interface, or mixer.
- Check the operating system’s sound controls and any application-specific volume or mute setting. A game or application can be muted independently of the system volume.
- If the source is stereo, check whether signal is present on both channels. Audio reaching only one side can sound absent to viewers listening through one channel or an affected speaker.
OBS documents its source meters, mute buttons, faders, and monitoring controls in the OBS Audio Mixer Guide. Follow the meter for the source you intend viewers to hear; do not assume that a different active meter means the right audio is selected.

Use a local recording or output as evidence
Listen to an ordinary local recording or other output from the encoder. Monitoring can help, but what the operator hears through monitoring is not necessarily the same as the audio being sent to viewers. If the local output is silent too, investigate the source, routing, or encoder before blaming YouTube. If the local output has sound but the YouTube stream does not, focus on the encoder’s outgoing audio configuration and YouTube’s ingest diagnostics. YouTube recommends checking encoder sound, routed audio/video sources, dashboard errors, and a local archive in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Confirm that Switchboard is receiving the encoder feed
In the Switchboard workflow, check the Confidence Monitor and connection status. Switchboard’s setup guide describes a test in which video appears in the monitor and the workflow status changes from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” If the workflow is not receiving, check that the encoder is connected using the workflow’s stream URL and key, and verify the encoder’s connection details before investigating a YouTube-only audio issue.

The documented Confidence Monitor check establishes video and workflow connection status; the documentation does not establish that the monitor has a separate audio meter or proves that audio is being delivered. A visible picture there is not audio confirmation. See Switchboard Live Initial Setup and the Switchboard Workflow Page.
Read YouTube’s live-stream health and error message
Open the YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream-health message rather than changing settings at random. The error “The ingestion stream contains no audio stream” points to the encoder’s audio output: YouTube’s explanation notes that some encoders have an option to enable audio, and that YouTube requires audio on videos.

YouTube also documents errors for multiple audio streams, unsupported audio codecs, and incorrect audio settings. Follow the error actually shown. Its encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 as audio codec options and recommends testing audio before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Do not switch codecs speculatively when the reported error identifies a different problem. Consult YouTube’s live-streaming errors reference and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
If only playback is silent, troubleshoot the viewer’s device
If your local recording has sound and other viewers can hear the stream, ask the affected viewer to check the YouTube player volume, browser or device volume, and the device’s sound settings. They can restart the browser or device and try another browser or device to isolate the problem. YouTube’s no-sound help covers these viewer-side checks.

Common symptoms and the next check

When a microphone replacement might help
A USB microphone is worth considering only if diagnosis points to a defective or inadequate existing microphone, such as a built-in webcam mic. It will not fix a muted OBS source, incorrect routing, an encoder configured to omit audio, a YouTube ingest problem, or a viewer’s muted device. Switchboard’s 2018 live-stream troubleshooting article discusses microphone hardware and audio settings, but it does not establish a USB microphone as a universal fix.
