No: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick did not confirm GTA 7. At a 2024 conference, he interjected “GTA 7?” during a question about Rockstar’s future—a remark contemporary coverage described as a joke. At Take-Two’s September 17, 2026 annual meeting, GTA 6 was still scheduled for November 19, 2026; that was the company’s stated plan at the time, not a guarantee that it would launch on that date.
What did Zelnick say about GTA 7?
At a 2024 TD Cowen conference, the interviewer began a question: “If you look out, I know we’re not even at GTA VI yet, but thinking about…” Zelnick cut in with “GTA 7?” The interviewer then continued with a broader question about Rockstar’s future, its live-service ambitions and the long gap between major releases. RockstarINTEL’s May 31, 2024 transcript-based report describes the interjection as a joke; Top Gear’s June 5, 2024 account also reproduces the exchange and says it was not a confirmation.

That context matters: this was a brief interruption in a conversation about what comes after GTA VI, not a prepared announcement. The reports do not establish that GTA 7 is in development, nor do they give it a release date or platforms. They also do not establish that this was the first official use of the title.
Why did the conversation turn to the long gap?
The interviewer was asking about Rockstar’s work since GTA V and whether the studio could avoid another long wait. Zelnick pushed back on the idea that Rockstar had simply been idle, saying: “It’s important to bear in mind that it’s not like Rockstar put out GTA V and sat on their hands for 12 years, right?”

He pointed to GTA Online, which he described as a continuing operation, as well as Red Dead 2 and years of content. “We launched GTA Online. That’s turned into a massive, living, breathing ecosystem which continues to perform and grow to this day,” he said. The exchange was about Rockstar’s broader output and future, not a timetable for a seventh Grand Theft Auto.
What was GTA 6’s release status at the time?
At Take-Two’s September 17, 2026 annual meeting, Zelnick said the company had announced GTA VI for November 19, 2026, and described it as a single-player title for Xbox and PS5. That is the schedule Take-Two stated at that meeting. The transcript is mirrored by Quartr rather than hosted on Take-Two’s investor-relations site: Quartr’s Take-Two Interactive company page.

So the “before GTA 6 release” framing reflects the schedule reported as of September 2026. It should not be read as evidence that GTA VI had launched, or that its scheduled date was guaranteed.

- It does not tell us: whether GTA 7 is in development, when it might arrive, or which platforms it might support.
- It is not proof of a first: the available reporting does not establish that this was the first time the title was said publicly or officially.
Top Gear and RockstarINTEL also reported Zelnick’s 2024 claim that the GTA VI announcement trailer received 93 million YouTube views in 24 hours. That figure is attributed to Zelnick in those reports; it is not an independently verified platform measurement in the cited coverage. Top Gear’s report includes the statement.
