Its headline feature is the ability to dig cellars and build stairs on every level, letting players shape multi-level taverns. It also adds expansion areas in three scenarios, a new dwarven campaign, and more ways to run a business and manage staff.
What “Digging Deeper” adds to tavern building
Cellars can now be dug on every level, and stairs connect the different floors. Rather than being limited to a single-level layout, players can build vertically and organize their taverns across multiple levels.
Expansion areas are available in Riverbottom, Halflington and Domhain. Those scenario-specific spaces add room to grow, while the cellar and stair mechanics provide more construction flexibility.
How to start a cellar or expansion
- Open the Build Room menu and select the Construct Foundation tool.
- Assign staff with the Construction skill to the Dogsbody role; construction work requires that skill and role.
- Plan for the in-game gold cost, which can be substantial. The difficulty setting affects the scale of the challenge.
The official announcements do not give a fixed gold price, so the cost should not be treated as a single amount that applies to every scenario or difficulty.

Domhain brings a new dwarven campaign
Domhain is the fourth campaign scenario and, according to the developer, the largest. Set among dwarven clans in the mountains, it pairs ongoing patron demand with earthquakes and a quest to help unearth an ancient artifact. Players can also expand their tavern there.
The scenario arrives alongside new business options: players can run a tavern shop, forge goods at a blacksmith, and bake cakes and serve desserts. These systems give the update a management dimension beyond building a larger venue.

Release status and what to expect
“Digging Deeper” first appeared on Steam’s Experimental branch on September 3, 2026, for early testing. The developer warned that the test version could have missing translations or voice-over, bugs and balance issues. The October 1 release announcement says testing led to fixes and balance changes, but does not claim every issue is resolved.
For players deciding whether to return, the update combines construction changes that apply across levels with scenario-specific expansion areas and a substantial new campaign setting. Building cellars and expansions also involves staff assignments and in-game gold, so the new space is not simply an instant upgrade.

What’s next for Tavern Keeper
The developer says it plans to focus next on Major Update 3, “Strut Your Staff,” after Update 2 has settled. The stated direction is more options for staff, staff management and development, and running the tavern. No release date was announced, so this is a roadmap intention rather than a dated commitment.
