Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute“ The program can’t start because tcatadsamsu14.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” The tcatadsamsu14.dll error usually means a third-party application cannot load one of its Beckhoff ADS-related components.
The file is associated in public metadata with Beckhoff Automation’s “ADS to Win32 Interface.” It is not a Windows system DLL, and the exact application that installed it is not confirmed by an official Beckhoff filename reference. The safest repair is therefore to identify the application that owns the file, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installer.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- The error names a Beckhoff, TwinCAT, engineering, runtime, or industrial application: repair or reinstall that application.
- The error also names
VCRUNTIME140.dll,mfc140u.dll, or another C/C++ runtime file: repair or install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable with the architecture required by the failing application. - The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows,” “contains an error,” or “entry point not found”: suspect a damaged, incompatible, or wrong-architecture DLL and reinstall the parent application.
- Only one game or launcher reports the error: use that program’s Verify files or Repair installation feature. There is no verified evidence that this DLL belongs to a particular game.
- The problem began after a Windows update or broader system failure: use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC after repairing the application itself.
Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into System32 or SysWOW64. That can place the wrong version in a system search path and leave the original application broken.
What tcatadsamsu14.dll does
ADS is Beckhoff’s Automation Device Specification interface for communication between automation software and devices or services. Beckhoff documentation describes ADS libraries as components delivered with its TwinCAT and ADS development environment.

Public file metadata labels tcatadsamsu14.dll as part of an “ADS to Win32 Interface” associated with Beckhoff Automation. That makes legacy TwinCAT software, an ADS client, Beckhoff engineering or runtime software, and another industrial application bundling Beckhoff components reasonable possibilities.
It does not prove that every copy belongs to TwinCAT 3, or that every current TwinCAT release contains this exact filename. To identify the owner, check:
- The application name shown in the error or shortcut.
- The executable path shown in Task Manager or the shortcut properties.
- The folder Windows searched for the missing DLL.
- The installed-program list for Beckhoff, TwinCAT, or an industrial application.
- The date when the error began and whether it followed an update, cleanup, migration, or restore.
Fix 1: repair the application that installed the DLL
This is the most likely solution because the DLL is an application component, not part of Windows.
Repair from Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that fails to start.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if that option is available.
- Start the application again.
A successful repair should restore the program’s own files without changing your documents or project data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the application may lose its local settings.

Repair from Control Panel
Some desktop applications do not expose repair controls in Settings.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the program is Beckhoff or TwinCAT software, use the original Beckhoff installer or the appropriate TwinCAT Package Manager workload. Do not mix files from different TwinCAT builds simply because their names look similar. Use the installer that matches the software already deployed on the machine.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the parent application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official installation media or download source. Reinstalling the parent program is safer than replacing only tcatadsamsu14.dll.
Confirm whether the file is in the expected folder
If you know the application’s executable location:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Check whether the application folder contains
tcatadsamsu14.dll. - If it is missing, do not copy in a random replacement. Repair or reinstall the application instead.
A DLL can also fail to load when it is present but one of its dependencies is absent. That is why “specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is missing.
Fix 2: repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
Some ADS-related software requires Microsoft runtime files, including VCRUNTIME140.dll, mfc140u.dll, or Universal CRT components. Read the complete error carefully. Install the runtime only when the message or diagnostic evidence points to it.
Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable guidance is available at Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads.
Choose x86 or x64 correctly
The runtime architecture must match the application, not simply the version of Windows:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Use the x86 redistributable for a 32-bit application.
- Use the x64 redistributable for a 64-bit application.
- On 64-bit Windows, both can be installed because 32-bit and 64-bit applications use different runtime files.
The publicly indexed metadata for this filename describes a 32-bit file, but that information is not vendor-certified. Confirm the architecture of the failing executable where possible.
Repair the installed runtime
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Find the relevant Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entry.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the runtime is not installed, download the matching package from Microsoft’s official page or use Microsoft’s direct vc_redist.x86.exe or vc_redist.x64.exe package. Do not remove every Visual C++ Redistributable entry. Different applications may legitimately require different releases.
If repairing the runtime changes nothing, reinstall the parent Beckhoff or ADS-based application. The runtime repair cannot recreate an application-specific DLL.
Fix 3: check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Security software may remove or quarantine a DLL after an update or scan. Do not restore it automatically, because a warning can indicate a malicious replacement or a modified installer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that mentions the affected application or DLL.
- Confirm the original file path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if you can verify that it came from a trusted Beckhoff or application installation.
- If you cannot verify it, leave it quarantined and reinstall the parent application from its official source.
After reinstalling, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the file is repeatedly removed, stop restoring it and investigate the installer, application source, and security detection.
Fix 4: correct a wrong architecture or incompatible DLL
These messages often point to a compatibility problem:
Rank #2

Includes Full Driver Pack – ensures hardware compatibility after installation. Automatically detects and installs drivers for most PCs.
- Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.
- “tcatadsamsu14.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “Error loading tcatadsamsu14.dll.”
- A crash immediately after an application update.
A 32-bit process must load compatible 32-bit components, while a 64-bit process requires compatible 64-bit components. An old DLL copied from another computer can also lack the entry points expected by the installed application.
To check the application process:
- Start the application until the error appears, if possible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if architecture information is available.
- Compare the process architecture with the application’s installer requirements.
The definitive fix is to reinstall the matching application version and its dependencies. Do not combine DLLs from different TwinCAT installations or from different machines.
Fix 5: update drivers only when the application depends on them
ADS software can communicate with industrial hardware, but a missing tcatadsamsu14.dll is not automatically a Device Manager problem. Update a driver only when the application vendor identifies a hardware or driver dependency, Device Manager reports an error, or the failure began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows cannot find a driver, use the hardware or application vendor’s official driver package. Avoid replacing the DLL as a substitute for a missing device driver.
When several hardware drivers need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which versions are outdated and automate installation with its full version; the free scan identifies the candidates, but reinstalling the Beckhoff or parent application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 6: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party Beckhoff DLL, so use them as a fallback rather than the first repair.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to the parent application repair path.
Running these commands repeatedly without identifying what changed is unlikely to restore an application-owned DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can show system problems and automate repair with its full version, while the free scan identifies issues; use it as an optional convenience, not as a replacement for reinstalling the Beckhoff application.
Fix 7: use System Restore only after a recent system change
If the DLL worked before a recent software installation, update, or cleanup, System Restore may reverse that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review which applications and drivers will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove recently installed programs and roll back settings. It does not replace personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding. If no suitable restore point exists, repair or reinstall the parent application instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 tcatadsamsu14.dll
regsvr32 registers COM and ActiveX DLLs that provide the required registration entry point, typically DllRegisterServer. An ADS runtime library loaded directly by an application is not automatically a COM component. If it lacks that entry point, registration fails and does not restore the missing dependency.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool, not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair utility. Registry cleaners are similarly unlikely to restore the correct application files.
What not to do
- Do not download
tcatadsamsu14.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy an unverified file into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not replace a 32-bit file with a 64-bit copy.
- Do not uninstall every Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Do not mix files from different TwinCAT builds.
- Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined file without verifying its source.
- Do not assume the file belongs to a particular game or consumer application without checking the executable path.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, match the wrong application version, or leave the missing dependency that caused the error untouched.
FAQ
Is tcatadsamsu14.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with third-party Beckhoff ADS software and is not a normal Windows system component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes it always come from TwinCAT?
Not necessarily. It may be bundled with TwinCAT, an ADS client, Beckhoff software, or another industrial application. Identify the owning executable before choosing a repair.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Reinstall the application that installed it using the vendor’s official installer or installation media.
Is the x86 Visual C++ package required?
Only if the failing application is 32-bit or the error identifies a missing x86 runtime. Match the redistributable to the application’s architecture.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency of tcatadsamsu14.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible, damaged, or located outside the application’s expected search path.
When should I contact the vendor?
Contact Beckhoff or the application vendor if repair and reinstall fail. Provide the exact error, executable path, application version, process architecture, DLL path, antivirus result, and the change that preceded the failure.
