Start with the least destructive checks: update Steam and Teardown, disable every Workshop add-on, verify the Steam installation, and rename the game’s local configuration folder. Then check GPU selection, drivers, security software, overlays, and hardware requirements. The correct fix depends on whether Teardown crashes before the menu, shows a white or black screen, or fails while loading a map.
This guide covers the Windows PC version, primarily the Steam edition. It does not assume that every crash has the same cause, and it avoids treating community workarounds as guaranteed solutions.
First, identify where the crash occurs

Workshop content and incorrect GPU selection deserve attention early. They can create symptoms that look like a damaged installation even when the core Steam files are intact.
Check the current PC requirements
Before spending time on software troubleshooting, compare the PC with the requirements currently shown on the English Steam store listing. At publication, it lists:

- A GTX 1060-class or similar dedicated GPU with approximately 4 GB of VRAM
- At least 12 GB of available storage
- Integrated graphics are explicitly listed as unsupported
Older localized or cached Steam pages show lower figures, including 4 GB of RAM, 3 GB of VRAM, and 4 GB of storage. Do not use those older values to judge a current installation.
The integrated-graphics warning does not necessarily mean every laptop is incompatible. A laptop may have a qualifying NVIDIA or AMD GPU but launch teardown.exe on its integrated adapter. Check the GPU actually being used in Task Manager > Performance > GPU, or inspect the adapters under Device Manager > Display adapters.
Fix 1: Restart Windows, Steam, and the game
Try this if: the crash appeared suddenly or Steam recently installed an update.
- Close Teardown.
- Exit Steam completely. If necessary, use the Steam menu’s exit option rather than only closing the window.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam and allow pending Steam client or game updates to finish.
- Launch Teardown once before changing anything else.
This is quick and nondestructive. It also establishes whether the problem was a temporary process or update state. The developer’s startup-crash guidance asks affected players to update the game before generating crash reports; see the developer’s Steam crash-report discussion.
Do not assume that a particular current patch fixes the issue unless the developer has explicitly confirmed it in current release information.
Fix 2: Disable every Workshop add-on
Try this early if: the game crashes while loading a map, or the problem started after installing or updating mods.
Teardown uses Steam Workshop content such as maps, missions, vehicles, and other add-ons. Subscribed content is generally made available when the game starts, as explained on the Teardown Steam Workshop page. Community reports describe startup, white-screen, and loading crashes associated with mods or leftover mod files, but those reports are not proof that Workshop content causes every crash.
- Open Steam and go to the Teardown Workshop or its Workshop-item management area.
- Unsubscribe from, or otherwise disable, all custom maps, missions, vehicles, and mods.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch Teardown with no custom content enabled.
If the clean launch works, re-enable add-ons individually or in small groups. Start the game after each change until the offending item is identified. Leave that item disabled and check whether its creator has published an update.
Unsubscribing may not remove every leftover local file. If the clean Workshop test fails, continue to the local-configuration reset instead of deleting random files from the installation directory.
Avoid manually deleting core files such as loading.lua or splash.lua as a first step. A community post from 2021 describes that kind of workaround, but it is not a current universal or official repair procedure.

Fix 3: Verify the Steam installation
Try this if: the game closes immediately, an update was interrupted, or files may have been modified or damaged.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Teardown and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
Steam may report that files were validated or reacquired. If files are repaired, test the game before reinstalling mods or changing other settings.

Verification can repair missing or damaged files in the Steam installation. It does not necessarily remove incompatible Workshop content, reset user configuration, repair GPU drivers, or fix Windows-level problems. If verification reacquires files but the crash continues, do not repeatedly run verification; proceed to Fix 2 and Fix 4.
Fix 4: Reset Teardown’s local configuration
Try this if: the game reaches a logo, shows a white or black screen, or stopped launching after a display, resolution, input, or graphics-setting change.
A damaged local setting can prevent the game from reaching its menu. Renaming the folder is safer than deleting it because it preserves a backup of settings, logs, and potentially local saves.
- Close Teardown and Steam.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%and press Enter. - Find the folder named
Teardown. - Rename it to
Teardown-backup. - Launch the game.
Player diagnostics commonly refer to %LOCALAPPDATA%Teardown and files such as log.txt or a crash subfolder. The exact contents can vary by game build. If the game starts after the reset, restore only necessary files from Teardown-backup, one at a time, and test after each restoration.

Warning: Do not delete the folder without first considering local saves and settings. Cloud synchronization may not protect every local file.
Fix 5: Update the graphics driver and force the correct GPU
Try this if: the game displays a black screen, your PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, or the failure began after a driver change.
- Identify the installed adapters in Task Manager > Performance > GPU or Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Install a driver from the manufacturer’s official support page: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart Windows.
- On a laptop, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add
teardown.exeif it is not listed, then set it to High performance. - Launch the game again.
A longstanding Teardown support report describes a black-screen case in which the game selected the integrated GPU instead of a qualifying dedicated card. Treat GPU routing as a diagnosis to test, not proof that it is the cause of your crash.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver may be reasonable. Do not install an arbitrary driver version, and do not use third-party “driver updater” tools. Laptop owners should consider the laptop manufacturer’s driver package if the GPU vendor’s generic package causes compatibility problems.

A driver update cannot make unsupported integrated graphics satisfy the game’s listed requirements.
Fix 6: Check Windows Security and permissions carefully
Try this if: Windows Security reports a quarantine, blocked file, or access-denied event involving the game.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Look for a blocked or quarantined file associated with Teardown or its Steam installation.
- Restore a file only after confirming that it belongs to the legitimate Steam game directory.
- If necessary, add a narrowly scoped exclusion for the game folder and test once.
- Remove the exclusion if it does not help.
A community-maintained FAQ reports that security software blocking a game folder can cause crashes, but this is not a current official diagnosis. Use this branch only when there is evidence of blocking. Never permanently disable antivirus, firewall, ransomware protection, or other security controls.
Fix 7: Test display, overlay, and launch configuration conflicts
Try this after: updating files, disabling Workshop content, resetting local data, and checking drivers.
- If the game can reach settings, test windowed or borderless mode.
- Disconnect unnecessary secondary monitors temporarily.
- Disable Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party monitoring tools.
- Undo GPU overclocking or undervolting.
- Return custom GPU control-panel profiles to their defaults.
Community reports mention overlays, window modes, resolutions, and direct executable launches as diagnostic experiments. These are anecdotal, not guaranteed fixes. Avoid copying a specific Steam launch command from an old guide: options supported by an earlier renderer or game build may be ignored or cause different problems in a current build.
Fix 8: Test another game branch, then submit crash data
Use this only if: the failure clearly appeared after a game update and the normal branch still crashes after the earlier checks.
- Open Teardown’s Steam Properties.
- Open Betas.
- Record the currently selected branch.
- If Steam offers an official previous or experimental branch, test it briefly.
- Compare whether the game reaches the menu or loads a map.
- Return to the normal branch after testing.
Community reports show that changing branches can alter launch behavior, but older builds may still crash when loading maps, introduce other bugs, or lack current content. A branch change is therefore a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent fix or a guarantee that a specific version will work.
If the crash persists, collect evidence and contact Saber Games Support. The developer has acknowledged investigating startup crashes and has requested crash reports from affected players.

The developer’s Steam instructions identify this Windows crash-dump directory:
C:Users<YourUserName>AppDataLocalCrashDumpsAppData is normally hidden. In File Explorer, enable hidden items if you cannot see it. The developer asks players to update the game, launch it once so reports can be generated, include only Teardown-related dumps, and place the relevant files in a ZIP archive.

C:Users<YourUserName>AppDataLocalTeardownLook for log.txt and, where present, a crash subfolder. These locations are useful diagnostic references observed in PC reports, but the exact layout can vary by build.
Include the following in a support ticket:
- CPU and GPU models
- Amount of RAM
- Windows version and 64-bit status
- Steam game branch and game build
- Whether integrated or dedicated GPU was active
- Whether all Workshop content was disabled
- Whether Steam verification completed successfully
- Whether the game reached the menu, logo, or only the Steam launch state
- The exact error message or crash module, if shown
- The relevant crash dumps and
log.txt, if available - The date the problem began and whether it followed an update or driver change
What not to do first
- Do not reinstall the whole game before testing Workshop content and local configuration.
- Do not assume every startup crash is caused by mods.
- Do not repeatedly verify files when verification has already completed without changing the symptom.
- Do not delete AppData without backing up or renaming the folder first.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Do not assume a laptop is incompatible merely because it has integrated graphics; check whether a dedicated GPU exists and is selected.
- Do not treat a previous beta branch as a confirmed fix.
- Do not promote reinstalling Visual C++ redistributables or running the game as administrator as universal solutions. Community reports mention such attempts, but the dossier does not establish them as reliable fixes.
Decision tree: which fix should you try?
No window appears: update Steam and the game, verify files, rename %LOCALAPPDATA%Teardown, check the active GPU and driver, then inspect crash dumps and Windows Security.

They can be a reported failure mode, especially when content or leftover files are loaded at startup, but they are not the confirmed cause of every crash. Disable everything, then re-enable add-ons individually.
Is integrated graphics support available?
The current English Steam listing explicitly says integrated graphics cards are not supported. A laptop with a qualifying dedicated GPU may still work if Windows is configured to launch Teardown on that GPU.
Where should I send Teardown crash files?
