Elon Musk initially said Tesla had cut AI5 memory to 72GB and AI6 memory to 144GB, citing Optimus production volume and cost. A report published October 3, 2026, says Musk revised AI5 to 96GB in an October 2 post; AI6 remained at 144GB. Musk expects little effect on Optimus performance, but no independent test cited in the available reporting establishes that.
Did Tesla cut AI5 memory to 72GB?
That was Musk’s initial announcement on October 1, 2026. In a post reproduced by Wccftech, the Tesla CEO said AI5 would use 72GB of LP5 memory, down from 144GB. He also said AI6 would use 144GB of LP6, down from 216GB.
Those figures were quickly superseded for AI5: Drive Tesla reported on October 3 that Musk had written in an October 2 post, “Actually, we decided to nudge AI5 up a little to 96GB, as Tesla would otherwise be the only company using the min RAM version of LP5”. On the reporting available that day, 96GB is the latest reported AI5 figure—not a confirmed specification in a Tesla technical data sheet. The October 3 report said AI6 remained at 144GB.
What changed in the announcements?
| Chip | Memory type | Initial October 1 announcement | Latest figure reported October 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI5 | LP5 | 72GB, down from 144GB, according to Musk’s post reproduced by Wccftech. | 96GB, attributed to Musk’s October 2 post by Drive Tesla. |
| AI6 | LP6 | 144GB, down from 216GB, according to Musk’s post reproduced by Wccftech. | 144GB; unchanged in Drive Tesla’s October 3 report. |
The change in AI5’s announced capacity should not be mistaken for a measured change in chip performance. The capacities come from Musk’s posts as quoted or reported by news outlets; the available sources do not establish them through an October Tesla specification sheet or independent measurement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why did Musk say Tesla reduced the memory?
Musk said the reductions were intended to secure enough memory volume for Optimus production and lower costs. His October 1 post, as reproduced by Wccftech, described the reductions as “the only way to get enough volume for Optimus production” and said they “greatly reduce[] cost.” The reporting does not quantify the supply increase or cost savings, so the size of either effect is not established.
Will the memory change affect Optimus performance?
Musk predicted a negligible effect. His explanation, reported by Benzinga, was that memory bandwidth is a more important constraint than total memory capacity. That is Musk’s rationale, not a performance result: the cited reports contain no independent benchmark or real-world comparison showing how Optimus operates with either configuration.

Capacity and bandwidth describe different properties. Capacity is how much data memory can hold; bandwidth is how quickly data can move between memory and the processor. A reduction in capacity does not, by itself, show how fast a workload will run. The effect depends on what the robot must keep in memory and how quickly it needs to access that data. The available reporting does not provide those workload details or measurements, so it cannot confirm Musk’s prediction.
Does a broader humanoid-robot estimate conflict with Tesla’s figures?
Not directly. Benzinga reported that Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra estimated humanoid robots could require more than 200GB of memory and multiple terabytes of storage per robot. That is a general industry estimate, not a Tesla-specific Optimus requirement or a tested comparison using the same design and workload. It therefore cannot establish that Tesla’s reported AI5 or AI6 configurations are insufficient.

What had Tesla said about AI5 and AI6 before October?
Tesla’s Q4 2025 update, published in January 2026, said AI5 and AI6 production was planned for 2027 and 2028, respectively. The same update set an AI5 target of 50 times AI4 performance, attributed to 10 times raw compute, nine times memory capacity, and five times hardened block quantization and softmax. These were earlier plans and targets; they do not confirm the October memory announcements, establish current production timing, or measure Optimus performance after the reported changes.
Tesla’s Q1 2026 update, published in April, said AI5’s final chip design was complete and discussed semiconductor fabrication expansion. That earlier development update likewise does not validate the subsequently reported memory capacities.
