Yes, the Chromebook game deal was real—but it was published on June 4, 2020, and it is not verified as redeemable today. The corrected offer included three games—DOOM, DOOM II, and Stardew Valley—plus separate expansions and in-game item packs. It was not six free full games, and it should not be treated as a live August 2026 deal.
What the 2020 Chromebook Perks offer included
The original June 4, 2020 report described three premium games as free through Chromebook Perks:
- DOOM
- DOOM II
- Stardew Valley
The report put the three games’ combined value at $14.99 at the time. That is a historical promotional figure, not a current price or a guarantee that the games can still be claimed.

The article was corrected: there were three free games, not six. The other featured offers were add-ons or in-game bonuses, not additional paid game licenses:

- Fallout Shelter — an in-app item pack that reportedly included 40 lunchboxes.
The 2020 report assigned the bonus items a combined value of $95, including individual promotional values for some packs. Those figures describe the offer as reported then; they are not verified current savings, current retail prices, or proof that the games’ services and items remain available. A full game, a story expansion, and consumable or convenience items are different kinds of offers and should not be added together as though they were six games.
Can you still claim the original bundle?
There is no evidence in current official material that this specific 2020 bundle remains active. Google’s current Chromebook Plus page highlights different, time-limited perks, including 12 months of Google AI Pro and a discount on LumaFusion, with terms applying. The presence of new offers does not prove that every older perk has expired, but the 2020 game bundle should be considered unverified and likely expired unless it appears in your Chromebook Perks page with valid terms.

Do not buy a Chromebook solely to get these old games. Perks vary by offer and may depend on the device, account, region, redemption history, and deadline. Check the offer’s own terms before assuming you qualify or that a displayed “free” subscription will not require payment details or renew into a paid plan.
How to check and redeem a current Chromebook perk
Google’s Chromebook perks instructions say to use a Chromebook running ChromeOS version 86 or newer. To check for offers:

- Sign in to your Chromebook with your Google Account. You cannot redeem perks in Guest mode or Incognito mode.
- Open the Chromebook Perks page.
- Find an offer that is available to you and select Get perk.
- Read the offer terms carefully, including the expiration date, region restrictions, any payment requirement, and what happens when a trial or subscription ends.
- Accept the terms and complete the partner’s redemption flow.
An offer may be limited to one redemption per Chromebook or per Google Account, depending on its terms. A redeemed perk cannot be transferred to another Google Account.
If an offer is missing or redemption fails
Start by checking whether the offer is still active in your region and whether it was already redeemed on this device or account. Eligibility can also be affected by device condition and management: refurbished or manufacturer-repaired Chromebooks may not qualify for some offers, and school- or employer-managed devices may have restrictions. The partner’s terms determine the final eligibility rules.

For technical problems, Google’s support guidance recommends trying again later if the redemption server is unavailable, disabling extensions that could interfere, and disconnecting an external monitor while redeeming. Also confirm that you are signed in normally rather than using Guest or Incognito mode. If the perk was already redeemed, it cannot be moved to a different Google Account.

Chromebook gaming now is a separate question
Google currently positions Chromebook Plus for browser-based and cloud gaming, listing GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming beta, Amazon Luna, and Boosteroid as options that can be used with a reliable internet connection. These services are not equivalent to receiving a local game license: access may depend on a separate account or subscription, owning a supported game, a compatible controller, and a stable connection. Latency, data limits, queues, resolution, and session limits can also affect the experience.

Google separately announced a Chromebook-specific GeForce NOW Fast Pass in November 2025. The announcement described a one-year offer with no ads, queue skipping, 10 hours of gaming per month, and up to five unused hours rolling over. That was a separate promotion, not part of the 2020 game bundle; check Google’s announcement and NVIDIA’s current terms for availability.
If you are shopping for a Chromebook, choose it for the work, study, and gaming you expect to do—not for a historical perk. Treat perks as temporary extras, and verify the live Perks page and the cost of any required cloud service, game library, controller, and internet access before buying.
