melonDS standalone is the best Nintendo DS emulator for most PC players who want to play Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, or White 2. DeSmuME is the strongest mature alternative, especially for turbo, cheats, graphics scaling, and troubleshooting. If you already use RetroArch, its newer melonDS DS core is the best integrated option.

There are not ten genuinely distinct, top-tier Windows DS emulators worth ranking. Many “10 best” lists pad their count with outdated forks, Android-only apps, frontends, duplicate cores, or 3DS emulators. This guide ranks the four credible PC configurations instead of pretending they are ten independent products.

Quick comparison

Option Standalone? Platforms Best for Pokémon Connectivity Main drawback
melonDS Yes Windows, macOS, Linux Best overall balance of setup, compatibility, saves, timing, and DS features Wi-Fi and local-multiplayer features are project goals, but support depends on the game and configuration Some advanced features require extra configuration
DeSmuME Yes Windows, macOS, Linux Turbo, cheats, mature documentation, and graphics troubleshooting No Wi-Fi emulation Not suitable for Wi-Fi-dependent play
RetroArch melonDS DS No; RetroArch core Platforms supported by RetroArch and the core Unified controller profiles, playlists, shaders, and hotkeys Uses the melonDS DS core’s capabilities More frontend and firmware configuration
RetroArch DeSmuME No; RetroArch core Platforms supported by RetroArch and the core RetroArch users who prefer DeSmuME behavior No actual DS Wi-Fi, Download Play, or link-cable emulation Core-specific settings can complicate troubleshooting

“Best” here is an editorial recommendation based on documented features and Pokémon-relevant use cases, not a claim of universal benchmark superiority.

Which Pokémon games can a DS emulator play?

These are Nintendo DS games and are the relevant targets for this guide:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo 3DS - Flame Red (Renewed)
  • Features: 3D Depth Slider, Wi-Fi Capability, Nintendo 3DS Sound, Mii Maker, 3D Camera, Front & Rear Camera, Touch Screen
  • Includes: AC Power Adapter, Stylus
  • Wired Connectivity: Wireless
  • Model Compatibility: Nintendo 3DS
  • Pokémon Diamond
  • Pokémon Pearl
  • Pokémon Platinum

  • Pokémon White
  • Pokémon Black 2
  • Pokémon White 2

A DS emulator is not a 3DS emulator. It will not run Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, or Moon, which require Nintendo 3DS emulation.

1. melonDS standalone: best overall

melonDS is the best first choice for most Pokémon players. It is a DS-focused emulator for Windows, macOS, and Linux with support for features that matter particularly in Pokémon: ordinary battery saves, savestates, real-time-clock behavior, microphone input, lid controls, touchscreen interaction, controller support, and fast-forward-style performance options.

Its project goals also include Wi-Fi and local-multiplayer functionality. That makes melonDS the more sensible emulator to try when trading or another connection feature matters. However, “supports Wi-Fi” does not mean every Pokémon game, build, network mode, and configuration will work automatically. Local wireless, Download Play, link features, and internet functionality are separate technologies and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to install melonDS

  1. Open the official melonDS download page.
  2. Choose the build for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  3. Extract or install it according to the platform instructions.
  4. Launch melonDS and choose File → Open ROM.
  5. Select a legally obtained .nds game file.
  6. Map a keyboard or controller and arrange both DS screens so they are easy to see.
  7. Start the game, make an ordinary in-game save, close the emulator, and confirm that the save returns correctly.

Use game files you are legally entitled to possess. Do not download ROMs or BIOS files from unofficial “ROM” or “BIOS download” sites.

BIOS and firmware

melonDS can boot games directly, but firmware booting requires BIOS and firmware dumps from appropriate Nintendo DS hardware. The project documentation distinguishes between regular DS firmware, including a 256 KB firmware image, and reduced DSi/3DS DS-mode firmware. A DSi or 3DS firmware dump may be suitable for direct game boot in some situations, but it is not the same as a complete original DS boot firmware. Consult the project’s official documentation for supported files and configuration rather than using files from an untrusted source.

Why Pokémon players tend to prefer it

  • Clock-sensitive gameplay: Pokémon’s day/night cycle, timed events, berries, and some evolutions depend on reliable real-time-clock behavior.
  • Touchscreen support: A mouse or mapped controller input handles DS menus and touch interactions.
  • Microphone support: Features that use the microphone can be tested separately, although operating-system permissions and emulator support vary.
  • Grinding convenience: Fast-forward reduces the time spent on repetitive battles and animations.
  • Connectivity potential: It is the better starting point for supported local or wireless features, but no emulator should be assumed to provide universal Pokémon trading.

2. DeSmuME standalone: best mature alternative

DeSmuME remains a valuable PC DS emulator because it has a long-established feature set, extensive documentation, turbo controls, cheats, controller support, microphone emulation, multiple renderers, and high-resolution 3D scaling. Keep it installed even if melonDS is your primary emulator: testing a problem game in a second emulator is often faster than guessing which setting is responsible.

DeSmuME’s official project site explicitly says that Wi-Fi emulation is not supported. It should therefore not be recommended for Wi-Fi-dependent Pokémon features or online trading. It can still be an excellent choice for ordinary single-player play.

How to install DeSmuME

  1. Download DeSmuME from the official project site.
  2. Launch the Windows, macOS, or Linux build.
  3. Choose File → Open ROM, as documented in the Windows manual.
  4. Select your legally obtained .nds file.
  5. Configure keyboard, controller, touchscreen, and microphone input.
  6. Use turbo selectively for grinding, but save through the Pokémon game’s own save menu.

Graphics scaling

DeSmuME supports software and OpenGL rendering. Version 0.9.13 added a GPU Scaling Factor for rendering 3D above the DS’s native 256×192 resolution. Higher scaling can make 3D scenes look cleaner, but it may introduce visual glitches or require more GPU power. Compare native resolution with scaled rendering on your own system instead of assuming the highest value is best.

Saves and the Wi-Fi limitation

The DeSmuME documentation identifies .dsv as its native save format. Do not simply rename a .dsv file to .sav and assume it is compatible with another emulator. Back up the original first and use a reputable save-conversion method when moving between emulators.

3. RetroArch with the melonDS DS core

RetroArch is a frontend; the emulator is supplied by a core. For melonDS, choose the newer Nintendo – DS (melonDS DS) core. Libretro identifies the older core labeled simply melonDS as obsolete and unmaintained, so it should not be the default recommendation.

This configuration is best for readers who already use RetroArch and want unified hotkeys, controller profiles, playlists, thumbnails, shaders, and frontend-level save-state management. It is not the same experience as standalone melonDS: RetroArch adds another layer involving the frontend, core options, video driver, input driver, firmware directory, and save directory.

Setup steps

  1. Install RetroArch from its official platform page.
  2. Open the core downloader or online updater.
  3. Install Nintendo – DS (melonDS DS).
  4. Do not select the legacy core named only melonDS unless you have a specific compatibility reason.
  5. Place any required firmware files in RetroArch’s System directory, using files you are legally entitled to possess.
  6. Load the .nds game through the melonDS DS core.
  7. Configure touchscreen input, screen layout, controller mappings, and save locations in RetroArch and the core options.
  8. Create a normal in-game save before depending on save states.

Choose this option for frontend convenience, not because it is automatically faster or more compatible than standalone melonDS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. RetroArch with the DeSmuME core

The RetroArch DeSmuME core suits users who prefer RetroArch’s unified interface but want DeSmuME’s behavior and tools. It supports ordinary saves, save states, rewinding, cheats, remapping, and RetroArch netplay features.

RetroArch netplay is not the same as actual Nintendo DS Download Play, link-cable emulation, or Wi-Fi emulation. The Libretro documentation also notes that external BIOS or firmware files may need to be placed in RetroArch’s System directory.

Nintendo 3DS - Cosmo Black (Renewed) [video game]
  • Nintendo 3DS offers a new way to play, 3D without the need for special glasses. The 3D Depth Slider lets your determine how much 3D you want to see.
  • Play 3D games and take 3D pictures with Nintendo 3DS. One inner camera and two outer cameras. Resolutions are 640 x 480 for each camera. Lens are single focus and uses the CMOS capture element.
  • Connect to a deeper wireless experience with SpotPass and StreetPass, giving you more exclusive content and connecting you with other Nintendo 3DS users.
  • Complete with an adjustable stylus, 6 AR cards, and fun built-in software such as Face Raiders, Nintendo 3DS Sound, and the Mii Maker application.
  • Use Parental Controls to restrict 3D mode for children 6 and under.

Setup and performance options

  1. Install RetroArch and download the Nintendo – DS (DeSmuME) core.
  2. Load the legally obtained .nds file.
  3. Copy external BIOS or firmware files to RetroArch’s System directory if needed.
  4. Enable Use External BIOS/Firmware in the core options and restart the core if RetroArch requests it.
  5. Try JIT mode first for performance.
  6. If a particular game has compatibility problems, try interpreter mode. It is slower but can be more compatible in some cases.

If RetroArch behaves unexpectedly, test the same game in standalone DeSmuME before changing multiple settings at once.

What about the other six?

Most supposed “top ten” entries do not add a meaningfully different PC DS emulator. They are commonly Android-only applications, 3DS emulators, macOS frontends, outdated forks, unmaintained cores, generic multi-system frontends, download portals, or duplicate versions of melonDS and DeSmuME.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters. A frontend is not automatically a separate emulator, and a Nintendo 3DS emulator cannot replace a DS emulator for the games covered here. The practical PC shortlist is melonDS standalone, DeSmuME standalone, and their RetroArch core configurations.

Pokémon setup guide

1. Use legitimate game and firmware files

The legality of emulator software and the legality of obtaining copyrighted games or BIOS files are separate questions that vary by jurisdiction. Use only game dumps and firmware files you are legally entitled to possess, and download emulator software from the official project pages.

2. Set up both DS screens

Pokémon is playable with a controller or keyboard, but the touchscreen remains important for menus and certain interactions. Use a vertical layout if you want a DS-like presentation, or place the screens side by side if that is more comfortable. Map a mouse or a controller button to touchscreen input and verify it before starting a long playthrough.

3. Test the microphone

Map microphone input to a key, controller button, or real microphone where supported. Test microphone-dependent features independently because permissions, drivers, and emulator implementations differ across Windows, macOS, and Linux.

4. Configure the clock carefully

Check the host operating system’s clock and the emulator’s real-time-clock settings. Avoid repeatedly changing the system clock to manipulate daily events: doing so can produce anomalies in berries, timed events, evolutions, and other clock-sensitive mechanics. Also remember that pausing or suspending an emulator for long periods may affect how events behave.

5. Save correctly

Use the Pokémon game’s own save menu as the primary save method. Save states are convenient emergency checkpoints, but they can become invalid after changing emulator versions, cores, graphics settings, or ROM revisions.

Back up the battery save file periodically. Before switching between melonDS, DeSmuME, or RetroArch, make a separate copy of the working save. Never overwrite the only known-good save while experimenting.

How to fix black screens, freezes, or missing saves

  1. Verify that the game dump is from the intended region and revision.
  2. Confirm that the emulator came from its official project page.
  3. Test direct game boot versus firmware boot.
  4. Disable cheats, patches, and unusual enhancements.
  5. Try another renderer, such as software instead of OpenGL or vice versa.
  6. Test the game in the other major standalone emulator.
  7. Restore a known-good battery-save backup.
  8. Do not delete the original save until you understand the failure.

Black screens and failed saves can result from a bad dump, incorrect firmware, an incompatible patch, a problematic cheat, or emulator-specific behavior. DeSmuME’s FAQ includes Pokémon-related save and anti-piracy troubleshooting references, but avoid unauthorized ROM-patching and download sites.

Which emulator should you choose?

  • Choose melonDS standalone for the simplest focused setup and the best overall feature balance.
  • Choose DeSmuME standalone for mature tools, turbo, cheats, high-resolution 3D scaling, or a troubleshooting fallback.
  • Choose RetroArch melonDS DS if your games already live in a RetroArch library and you value unified controls, hotkeys, playlists, and shaders.
  • Choose RetroArch DeSmuME if you specifically want DeSmuME inside RetroArch and do not need genuine DS Wi-Fi or Download Play.
  • Keep both standalone emulators if you care about long-term Pokémon saves or plan to investigate game-specific problems.

Project versions and platform packages do not always arrive at the same time. The official DeSmuME site identifies version 0.9.13, while the melonDS GitHub repository shows a later 1.1 release entry; check the official release or download page for the exact build available for your operating system on the day you install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can DS emulators run Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver?

Yes. HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS games and are appropriate targets for melonDS, DeSmuME, and their corresponding RetroArch cores. Use ordinary in-game saves and test the real-time clock before beginning a long playthrough.

Can I trade Pokémon on PC?

Possibly, depending on the game, connection method, emulator build, firmware, and configuration. melonDS is the better option to investigate because it focuses on Wi-Fi and local-multiplayer features. DeSmuME officially does not support Wi-Fi, and RetroArch netplay is not the same as DS Download Play, link features, or Wi-Fi emulation.

Do I need BIOS files?

Not always. melonDS can boot games directly, while firmware boot or particular core configurations may require legally obtained BIOS and firmware dumps. Follow the emulator’s official documentation rather than downloading BIOS files from unofficial sites.

Are save states safe for Pokémon?

They are useful as supplementary recovery points, but they should not replace the game’s normal save system. Keep periodic backups of the battery save because save states can fail after changing cores, emulator versions, settings, or ROM revisions.

Can I use a controller?

Yes. melonDS, DeSmuME, and the RetroArch cores support controller or keyboard mapping. You should also map touchscreen input to a mouse, button, or analog control.

Why is the screen black?

Check the game region and revision, emulator source, firmware mode, cheats and patches, renderer, and save file. Then test the same game in the other major standalone emulator. Keep the original save untouched while troubleshooting.

Can I transfer saves between melonDS and DeSmuME?

Often, but formats and conventions can differ. DeSmuME documentation identifies .dsv as its native format, while other environments may use .sav. Back up the working file and use a reputable conversion method; do not assume that renaming an extension is sufficient.

Is RetroArch’s melonDS core the same as standalone melonDS?

No. RetroArch’s melonDS DS is a core running inside the RetroArch frontend. It uses melonDS-based emulation but adds frontend configuration and management layers. The older RetroArch core labeled simply melonDS is identified by Libretro as obsolete and unmaintained.

Is a DS emulator the same as a 3DS emulator?

No. DS emulators target Nintendo DS games such as Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. 3DS games such as X, Y, and Sun require a different emulator platform.

The Bottom Line

For most Pokémon players, install melonDS standalone first and keep DeSmuME as a troubleshooting alternative. Use RetroArch’s melonDS DS core only when RetroArch’s unified library and controls matter more than the simplest setup. Treat trading and wireless features as configuration-dependent, and protect your Pokémon progress with regular in-game saves plus separate battery-save backups.
