This is an editorial selection, not an objective consensus: GamesRadar+ says its ranking drew on the Retro Gamer team, while GameSpot offers a separate selection with a count inconsistency between its headline and introduction. The games below are chosen for lasting appeal, craft, variety, and a clear reason to play them on DS.
There is no single correct order for a library this broad. Choose a mystery for story and puzzles, a strategy game for planning, or a platformer for fast, familiar play. Some entries are native DS releases; Chrono Trigger is a classic from another system whose DS edition is the version discussed here.
How this list is selected
Rather than treat one publication’s ranking as a universal verdict, this list weighs enduring appeal, quality, variety, and what each game does with the DS. The hardware matters most when its features deepen the play: Kirby: Canvas Curse turns stylus strokes into paths, Tetris DS offers multiple modes and multiplayer, and several adventures use touchscreen input for investigation or combat mechanics.
The recommendations below draw on games featured by GamesRadar+ and GameSpot, whose selections overlap but are not identical. Neither outlet supplies a standardized scoring method, so the order here is a guide to different kinds of memorable DS play, not a claim that every reader should rank the games the same way.

The 25 best DS games to play
1. Hotel Dusk: Room 215
A mystery built around reading, observation, and puzzle solving, Hotel Dusk uses the DS in a distinctive way: the system is held vertically, making its two screens feel like an open book. Stylus interaction supports exploration as you investigate the hotel and its guests. GamesRadar+ lists Cing as developer and 2007 as the release year.
2. Tetris DS
Tetris DS gives the familiar falling-block puzzle a generous set of ways to play. GamesRadar+ describes six modes and multiplayer; GameSpot also highlights its Nintendo-themed modes and multiplayer. It is a strong pick for quick solo sessions as well as competition with other players.
3. Chrono Trigger (DS version)
Chrono Trigger began before the DS, so this recommendation is specifically for the DS edition, not a claim that the game originated on the handheld. GamesRadar+ lists Square and 2008 for the DS entry, noting touchscreen controls and quality-of-life additions. The game is also available on PC, so the DS version is one way to experience it rather than the only edition.
Rank #2
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
4. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
This courtroom mystery pairs investigation with dramatic cross-examinations. The DS version uses touch interactions during investigation, particularly in the final case, giving the handheld’s interface a role in how you inspect evidence and progress through the story. GamesRadar+ lists Capcom and 2005 for this entry.

5. Kirby: Canvas Curse
Canvas Curse makes the touchscreen its central control surface: instead of steering Kirby in the usual way, you draw paths with the stylus to guide him through each stage. That simple change gives the platforming a distinctly DS feel. GamesRadar+ lists HAL Laboratory and 2005.
6. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Dawn of Sorrow builds on the series’ action and exploration with its Tactical Soul system, while the DS edition also uses a touchscreen seal mechanic. GamesRadar+ praises the game but criticizes the implementation of that mechanic, a useful caveat for players who prefer their action controls uninterrupted. The entry is listed as a 2005 Konami release.
Rank #3
- ✅Compliation Collection: Different genre-diverse games with save progress functionality. Includes a protective case.
- ✅Wide Compatibility: Works with all NDS/3DS/2DS systems (including XL/LL variants).
- ✅Plug & Play: English interface with auto-detects console language or multilingual games. Simply insert the card to install and play.

7. New Super Mario Bros.
This is a straightforward recommendation for anyone who wants precise, accessible platforming. GamesRadar+ points to its level design and power-ups, which make the familiar Mario formula rewarding without requiring a special interest in touch controls. Nintendo’s DS entry is listed as a 2006 release.
8. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
For turn-based strategy, Dual Strike adds dual commanding officers, additional unit types, and battles shaped around both DS screens. GameSpot discusses its dual-CO approach and touchscreen use; GamesRadar+ also notes the two-CO and dual-screen battle context. It suits players who enjoy planning several moves ahead more than quick reflexes.
9. Animal Crossing: Wild World
Wild World centers on managing a village and customizing your character, with GameSpot also describing visits to other players’ villages online. That historical feature should not be mistaken for a guarantee that online services remain available today; the game’s appeal as a village-life experience does not depend on assuming that they do.
Rank #4
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
10. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Ghost Trick combines a mystery with object-based puzzles: its story progresses as you possess objects and manipulate situations to uncover what happened. GamesRadar+ lists Capcom and 2010, describing its puzzle-driven narrative as a key part of the experience.
Choose by the kind of game you want
| What you want to play | Start with | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen-led play | Kirby: Canvas Curse | Stylus-drawn paths directly guide Kirby. |
| Puzzles and competition | Tetris DS | Six modes and multiplayer are described by GamesRadar+; GameSpot also discusses modes and multiplayer. |
| A story mystery | Hotel Dusk: Room 215 or Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective | Hotel Dusk emphasizes vertical-screen reading, exploration, and puzzles; Ghost Trick advances its mystery through object-possession puzzles. |
| Turn-based planning | Advance Wars: Dual Strike | Dual commanding officers, additional unit types, and dual-screen battles add strategic options. |
| Classic platforming | New Super Mario Bros. | Its appeal rests on level design and power-ups rather than a requirement to use the touchscreen. |
| Action and exploration | Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow | Its Tactical Soul system gives the action a distinctive progression hook; its touchscreen seal mechanic may not suit every player. |
What makes a DS game feel like a DS game?
The hardware did not improve every game simply by being present. The strongest examples use the touchscreen, two screens, or handheld format to support a specific activity: Canvas Curse makes drawing part of movement, Hotel Dusk arranges reading and play vertically, and Advance Wars: Dual Strike frames battles across the dual-screen layout. Tetris DS uses its modes and multiplayer to make repeat play a natural fit.
Other entries are worthwhile for their underlying design more than a radical hardware experiment. New Super Mario Bros. is a platformer recommendation; Chrono Trigger is recommended as a particular DS edition of an earlier game. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow add DS touchscreen interactions, but those interactions are parts of larger adventures rather than the sole reason to choose them.

Playing and buying DS games today
Match the game to compatible hardware
These are recommendations for Nintendo DS games, and original DS cartridges are the direct physical format to look for. GameSpot names DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL revisions and says Nintendo 3DS systems are backward compatible with DS games. Check compatibility for the exact system you own, particularly if you are considering a different or newer model; support should not be inferred from the word “Nintendo” alone.
Check used cartridges carefully
For a second-hand purchase, confirm that the listing is for the intended system and region, inspect the cartridge and label condition, and consider whether the cartridge is authentic. Current prices, stock, and listing authenticity are not established here, so compare live listings rather than relying on an assumed standard price.
Consider the edition, not just the title
Some games on a DS recommendation list originated elsewhere. Chrono Trigger is the clearest example here: the DS release is a version with touchscreen controls and quality-of-life changes, while the game also has a PC release. When comparing editions, check that the features and format you want belong to the particular version being offered.
