The 28 Best Dark-Type Pokémon, Ranked

Yveltal, Tyranitar, Darkrai, and more: 28 notable Dark-type Pokémon ranked by battle potential, distinctive roles, typing, and impact across the series.

Yveltal is a strong pick for the best Dark-type Pokémon overall, but there is no official or universally accepted winner. This ranking weighs battle performance, distinctive abilities and movepools, type utility, and historical impact. It spans different games and generations, so the best choice for a particular team or competitive format may be different.

How this ranking works

The order is an editorial judgment, not a canonical ranking. It balances broad battle potential with distinctive roles, useful abilities and moves, typing, and significance across the series. These qualities do not translate directly into one universal strength score: a Pokémon’s value depends on the game, its available moves, its training, and the challenge.

Official Pokémon guidance similarly treats strength as context-dependent, while published rankings use different criteria and scopes. Dexerto’s all-time list considers stats, potential movepools, abilities, and battle performance; Pokedex.gg presents generation-specific rankings with options such as Legendary and Mega Pokémon. Neither establishes these exact 28 entries or their order.

The 28 best Dark-type Pokémon

  1. Yveltal

A Legendary with a distinctive Dark/Flying combination and a strong all-around case for the top spot. Dexerto also names Yveltal its strongest overall pick, though that is one publication’s editorial judgment rather than an official verdict.

  2. Tyranitar

A standout across multiple competitive eras, Tyranitar combines Dark typing with a durable, imposing presence. Its historical importance and sustained appeal make it one of the most compelling choices beyond raw matchup advantages.

  3. Darkrai

Darkrai’s identity as a Mythical Dark-type gives it a distinctive place in the series. It is an appealing pick for players who want an aggressive, unusual Pokémon rather than a conventional team-support role.

  4. Weavile

Weavile is a fast-attacking option whose competitive reputation has varied with the rules and metagame. Its speed-focused role makes it a very different choice from bulkier Dark-types such as Tyranitar.

  5. Hydreigon

Hydreigon’s Dark/Dragon typing and history in competitive play earn it a high place. It illustrates why full typing matters: a Pokémon’s strengths and vulnerabilities come from the combination, not Dark typing alone.

  6. Bisharp

Bisharp developed a stronger competitive role in the historical OU context discussed by Smogon after changes that benefited Dark-types. Its Steel/Dark typing makes it a particularly distinctive matchup choice.

  7. Umbreon

Umbreon is the defensive counterpoint to the list’s many attackers. Its appeal is longevity and support rather than a claim to be the hardest-hitting Dark-type.

  8. Houndoom

Houndoom’s Dark/Fire typing sets it apart from more common Dark-type profiles. It is an attractive option when a team wants a Dark Pokémon with a contrasting offensive identity.

  9. Absol

Absol is one of the series’ most recognizable Dark-types, with a dramatic design and a clear offensive identity. Its enduring popularity helps it stand out even when a specific game’s competitive rankings favor other choices.

  10. Crawdaunt

Crawdaunt is another example of a Pokémon whose role can rise or fall with the competitive environment. Smogon’s historical OU account notes that it found stronger opportunities after changes to Dark-type moves and matchups.

  11. Mandibuzz

Mandibuzz offers a bulky Dark/Flying profile for players who value staying power and utility over a fast sweep. Its dual typing should be considered alongside any team’s broader matchup needs.

  12. Greninja

Greninja brings a fast, flexible feel to the Dark-type roster. Its appeal is less about representing a single archetype and more about the possibilities offered by its broader movepool and game-specific options.

  13. Incineroar

Incineroar’s Fire/Dark typing gives it a useful identity distinct from pure Dark attackers. It is a good reminder that Dark Pokémon can contribute through roles other than simply exploiting Psychic or Ghost opponents.

  14. Kingambit

Kingambit is a powerful, imposing Dark/Steel choice. Its complete typing can offer useful resistances while also bringing its own vulnerabilities, so it is best judged as a specific team piece rather than a generic Dark-type answer.

  15. Roaring Moon

Roaring Moon adds a striking Dark/Dragon option to the modern roster. Its appeal comes from its distinctive identity and offensive potential, with practical value determined by the game and ruleset.

  16. Samurott (Hisuian Form)

Hisuian Samurott’s Water/Dark typing makes it a flexible alternative to the more familiar Dark combinations. Its form and availability depend on the specific game.

  17. Sharpedo

Sharpedo is a natural pick for a high-pressure, aggressive team style. Its Water/Dark combination provides a different matchup profile from Dark-types built around bulk or support.

  18. Krookodile

Krookodile’s Ground/Dark typing gives it a distinctive place among the type’s attackers. It can be appealing when a team wants Dark coverage alongside a second offensive typing.

  19. Honchkrow

Honchkrow’s Dark/Flying typing and strong character make it a memorable choice. As with other dual types, its overall matchups depend on both types rather than Dark alone.

  20. Overqwil

Overqwil’s Dark/Poison typing is unusual and can make it an interesting specialist. Its value is tied to what the particular game allows it to do, not just its type combination on paper.

  21. Mabosstiff

Mabosstiff is a more straightforward Dark-type option with a strong character-driven presence. It suits players looking for a dedicated Dark Pokémon rather than an elaborate type pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  22. Thievul

Thievul offers a more modest, utility-minded take on the type. It is a useful reminder that a list of notable Dark-types need not consist entirely of Legendary Pokémon and top-end competitive threats.

  23. Shiftry

Shiftry’s Grass/Dark typing makes it a distinctive pick with a different set of opportunities and risks from pure Dark-types. Its placement reflects versatility and series character, not a universal competitive tier.

  24. Spiritomb

Spiritomb has a striking Ghost/Dark combination that gives it particular thematic and matchup appeal. Its role is best assessed in the context of the game and moves available to it.

  25. Alolan Persian

Alolan Persian brings a regional form and a different personality to the Dark roster. Its availability is limited to games that include that form.

  26. Skuntank

Skuntank’s Poison/Dark combination offers a useful alternative to the type’s more familiar pairings. It earns a place for its specific identity, even if it is not the first name in a broad search for the strongest Dark-type.

  27. Mightyena

Mightyena is a recognizable, accessible pure Dark-type that captures the type’s early-series identity. Its straightforward design makes it an easy fit for players building around theme as well as battle utility.

  28. Morpeko

Morpeko closes the list as a distinctive, more unconventional Dark-type. Its appeal is personality and variety rather than a claim that it outranks the strongest all-around options above.

What Dark typing is good at—and what to watch for

Dark was introduced in Generation II. Dark-type moves are super effective against Psychic and Ghost Pokémon; Dark Pokémon are immune to Psychic attacks and resist Ghost- and Dark-type attacks, according to the cited type chart. Fighting-, Bug-, and Fairy-type attacks are super effective against Dark Pokémon. A dual type can change the combined matchup, so check the Pokémon’s full typing rather than assuming every Dark-type shares the same strengths and weaknesses.

Choosing one for your game or team

  • For a broad all-around pick: consider Yveltal or Tyranitar, while checking that the Pokémon is available in your game.
  • For speed and pressure: Weavile or Greninja offer a different profile from bulky choices; the moves and rules available in your game still matter.
  • For a defensive role: Umbreon or Mandibuzz are stronger fits for a team seeking durability and support than a fast attacker.
  • For a distinctive dual type: compare the whole pairing—such as Hydreigon’s Dark/Dragon or Houndoom’s Dark/Fire—against the threats your team needs to handle.
  • For competitive battles: check the exact format and current metagame. Historical OU success is evidence of performance in that era, not a guarantee of present-day viability.

There is no single strongest Dark-type across every game and challenge. The official guidance on game strength emphasizes that training and the challenge matter; for a focused team choice, start with the role and matchups you need, then confirm availability and moves in the game you are playing.
