There was no single Android game that was best for everyone in 2024. For a paid game with replayable runs, Balatro was a standout; for high-production free-to-play action, Zenless Zone Zero made the strongest case; and Google Play named AFK Journey its Best Game of 2024. This retrospective separates new releases from older games that remained worth playing, and weighs each pick against its cost model, device demands and online dependence.

This is a curated shortlist, not a numbered ranking. The picks favor strong core gameplay, a good fit for touchscreens, meaningful content and an honest account of cost and device trade-offs. Awards are useful evidence of recognition, not proof that a game suits every player.
Best premium Android games
A paid game can be a better fit if you want a known upfront cost rather than a free download built around ongoing purchases. That does not automatically make every paid game a better value: consider how much you will play, what the purchase includes and whether the game depends on online services.

Balatro: best premium pick for repeatable runs
Best for: players who like strategy, card combinations and short sessions. Skip it if: you want real-time action or a conventional poker game.
Balatro turns poker hands into the basis of a roguelike deck-builder. You build and alter a deck, combine effects and try to make each run go further than the last. That structure makes it easy to return for another attempt, while its compact runs suit a phone better than a game that expects a long uninterrupted session.
It is not a traditional poker simulator: the appeal is experimenting with combinations and scoring systems. Android Authority reported a U.S. price of $10 on December 31, 2024; that is a historical price, not a quote for a current store listing. Best for: players who like planned defenses, distinct levels and a primarily single-player structure. Skip it if: you want open-ended action or are looking for an entirely free game.
Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance builds on the series’ tower-defense format, with the ability to control two heroes and systems intended to encourage replay. Google Play named it Best on Play Pass in its 2024 awards. Android Authority reported a $4 sale price at the time of its coverage and noted additional hero purchases; both the price and what is included can vary. GRID Legends: Deluxe Edition: best racing showcase for a powerful phone
Best for: owners of recent, capable phones who want a large-scale racing game. Skip it if: your phone has limited storage or struggles with demanding 3D games.

Best free-to-play Android games
“Free-to-play” means there is no required purchase to start, not that every part of the game is free or that progress will feel equally comfortable without spending. These games may use in-app purchases, randomized rewards, passes or other recurring systems. Check the current listing and in-game purchase details, and set a spending limit if you try one.

Zenless Zone Zero: best stylish action RPG
Best for: players who want anime-inspired presentation and real-time combat. Skip it if: you dislike gacha mechanics, have an older phone or need a game that works offline.

Google Play named AFK Journey its Best Game of 2024, citing its roster, tactical battle system, explorable world and art direction. Pokémon TCG Pocket: best for collecting digital cards
Best for: Pokémon fans who enjoy collecting, opening packs and short card-game interactions. Skip it if: your main priority is a deep, tournament-focused competitive card game.

Star Wars: Hunters: best for accessible team shooting

Its more self-contained scale is a strength if you want a focused adventure rather than a game built around daily progression. Clash of Clans was not a 2024 release. - Older or budget phone: Start by checking each game’s current Play listing for your exact device. The evidence here does not establish a reliable minimum chipset or performance guarantee for most titles. Avoid assuming that a game will run smoothly just because it installs.
- Recent flagship: You have a better case for trying demanding games such as GRID Legends or Zenless Zone Zero, but check storage and compatibility first. Launch-era requirements are not a substitute for the current listing.
- Tablet or foldable: Clash of Clans was specifically recognized for cross-device optimization. For other games, check the listing and expect that a larger screen or aspect ratio may affect how controls and menus feel.
- Controller player: Android Authority noted controller support for Zenless Zone Zero. Do not generalize that to every game in this list; support can be native, partial or dependent on a particular device and version.
- Short sessions: Try Balatro for repeatable runs or Squad Busters for quick online matches. The latter needs a working service and matchmaking, unlike a recommendation you can assume will remain playable offline.
- Predictable spending: A premium purchase such as Balatro may be easier to budget for than a free-to-play game with ongoing offers. Confirm the current price and included content before purchase.
Before you install: five checks that prevent surprises
- Check compatibility and storage. Look at the current Google Play listing for your device, Android version and required storage. Large games may download additional content after installation. The historical 15 GB figure reported for GRID Legends illustrates why free space matters, but it should not be treated as a current universal figure.
- Work out the real cost. Distinguish a paid download from a free game with in-app purchases, and check whether purchases are cosmetic, progression-related or randomized. For a subscription game, confirm the current catalog and local terms rather than assuming an older inclusion still applies.
- Assume online features need a connection unless verified otherwise. Multiplayer, account-linked progression and live-service content may require internet access. The dossier does not establish dependable offline behavior for every recommendation, so check the developer’s current details if offline play is essential.
- Consider battery and heat. Long sessions in demanding 3D games can use more power and warm a phone. Try a short session before planning to play for hours, especially on an older device.
- Use official listings and support information. Store availability, requirements and service status can change.
