Whitespring Golf Course is the best all-around CAMP location in Fallout 76 if you value space, nearby shops and vendors, and patrolling robot protection—and can tolerate competition for the spot. If you want a more focused base, choose Gilman Lumber Mill for wood, north of Sunnyside Station for lead, Tyler County Dirt Track for aluminum and river water, or a pond site for purified water. These are established starting points, not a guarantee that any location will be free on a particular server.

PC Gamer’s guide is from 2019, so its qualitative benefits should be weighed against your own server conditions and building plans.
How to choose a spot for your first CAMP
Start with the task you want the CAMP to make easier. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 Player’s Guide – Express Yourself! (June 20, 2023) describes CAMPs as places for crafting, purified water, crops, resource extraction, vending, and sleeping for a Well-Rested bonus. A first base does not need to optimize all of those at once.

- Pick a specific resource first if you regularly run short of one material: Sunnyside for lead, Tyler County for aluminum, or Gilman for wood collection.
- Prioritize water if you want purifiers: compare the ponds at Site Alpha and southwest Watoga with the river near Tyler County Dirt Track.
- Prioritize services and activity if you want a vendor or events close by: consider Whitespring or the area west of Morgantown Station, accepting their higher competition or traffic.
- Choose scenery and terrain if the build itself is the point. Uneven ground and constrained terrain may still affect placement, even though newer build rules make experimentation more practical.
For a newcomer who wants a practical, less commerce-centered start, Gilman Lumber Mill is a reasonable wood-focused option. If your priority is convenience across shops and build space instead, Whitespring remains the stronger general-purpose pick when available.
Is Whitespring still a good place to build?
It remains a strong convenience choice based on its space, patrolling robots, and nearby resort shops and vendors. Its weakness is not a changed resource statistic but competition: many players build there, so your CAMP may not be placeable on a given server. Keep a second CAMP location ready or change servers rather than assuming the spot will always be free.

Bethesda’s C.A.M.P. Revamp update, dated September 2, 2025, added Relaxed Build Rules in Adventure Mode and reorganized the Workshop interface to make items easier to find. That makes trying constrained or uneven sites more practical, but it does not remove the need to find a valid placement area or make an occupied location available.
Why can’t I place my CAMP at the spot I chose?
A live CAMP location can be occupied by another player on the server you joined. This is especially likely at popular sites such as Whitespring. The practical options are to switch servers or select another saved CAMP location. Bethesda’s Player’s Guide says CAMP slots let players save and manage multiple CAMPs; the precise number available is not specified here.

Terrain is a separate consideration. A site may be appealing but still limit how you can place a build. Relaxed Build Rules make experimentation easier than before, but do not guarantee that every structure will fit every location.
Can you keep a vendor CAMP and a separate resource CAMP?
Yes. Bethesda Support says vending machines can be built in CAMPs and shelters, and vending inventory is shared across all of your CAMPs in one item-slot pool. You can therefore keep one CAMP near a busy vendor route and use another for a resource deposit or scenic build without rebuilding the shop inventory each time.

That is a useful reason to plan around more than one location: a sales-oriented CAMP benefits from foot traffic, while a resource or scenery build can prioritize its own setting. Bethesda’s guidance also notes that shelters provide separate interiors with more relaxed building restrictions.

A Best Build is a submitted snapshot associated with its original location, not a replacement for your active CAMP. Bethesda says submissions rotate hourly; newer and popular builds receive visibility; live CAMPs take priority when locations conflict; and Best Builds never overwrite live CAMPs. Best Builds are platform-locked but not region-locked.

Best Build vendors are deactivated, so a showcase submission is not a sales venue. Bethesda says resource-producing objects—including Collectrons and water purifiers—remain active in Best Builds, which can make a resource-focused build useful while its owner is offline.
