There is no single best class in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered: the right pick depends on how you want to fight. Choose Spellsword for a ready-made melee-and-magic mix, Sorcerer for a tougher magic-focused character, Assassin for stealth with a bow and blade, or a custom class if you want to build around a specific set of skills. These are playstyle recommendations, not official rankings; Bethesda’s advice is to take your time and play your own way.
Which class should you pick?

The class recommendations in this table reflect PC Gamer’s guide, last updated April 30, 2025, rather than a developer ranking. The best choice is the one whose skills support the actions you expect to use, at the range and level of durability you prefer.
How class choice affects your character
According to Bethesda Support’s class-system explanation, each class has a Combat Arts, Magic Arts, or Stealth Arts specialization. Skills associated with that specialization receive a +5 starting bonus and are easier to increase. A class also has five major skills, which start at 30 and increase more easily; five minor skills, which start at 15; and miscellaneous skills, which start at 5 and increase most slowly. Classes receive +10 to two attributes.
These figures describe the Remastered class system as presented by Bethesda Support. The original PC manual documents the earlier game’s class structure, but its major- and minor-skill counts and starting values differ. Do not treat those original-game numbers as the values shown on the Remastered class screen.

Why choose Spellsword?
Spellsword is a strong preset if you want to switch between weapon combat and spellcasting without building the class yourself. PC Gamer describes it as a sword-and-shield setup with Destruction and other useful magic schools, combining offensive and defensive skills. Its tradeoff is that the preset is designed to cover both sides of combat rather than concentrate entirely on one.
Why choose Sorcerer?
Sorcerer fits a player who wants magic to be central but does not want a fragile-feeling character. PC Gamer points to its broad magic proficiency and Endurance, as well as Heavy Armor where the Mage has Illusion. That mix can suit a caster who wants more protection or room to add melee options.

Pick Assassin if you want to approach fights through stealth and combine ranged attacks with blade combat. PC Gamer highlights Blade, Marksman, Security, and Sneak strengths, making it the closest of these recommended presets to a stealth-archer style. It is less suited to someone seeking a direct, heavily armored front-line fighter.
When is a custom class better?
A custom class is a legitimate option, not an expert-only choice. It is useful when you know which skills you want to rely on and want the specialization, attributes, and skills to support that plan. PC Gamer particularly recommends considering it for focused melee builds: a preset may spread major skills across weapon types you do not intend to use.

When selecting skills, prioritize the ones central to your playstyle that you expect to be harder to raise. PC Gamer cautions against making frequently used movement skills major skills; that is editorial build advice, not a Bethesda rule. Class customization remains broadly like the original game, while some leveling behavior changed in the remaster, so avoid importing old leveling advice without checking that it applies.
How to make the choice
- Decide how you want to engage: up close with weapons, primarily with magic, or through stealth and ranged attacks.
- Choose a preset if its mix matches that plan: Spellsword, Sorcerer, and Assassin each offer a ready-made direction.
- Inspect the skills before committing: favor a class whose major skills support the actions you will actually use.
- Build custom if the presets do not fit: tailor the class around your preferred specialization, attributes, and skill set.
There is no universal best class
Bethesda’s official Oblivion Remastered beginner guide encourages players to explore, take their time, and play their own way. Megan Sawyer, Senior Environment Artist at Bethesda Game Studios, puts it this way: “You’ll pick a different class or a different birthsign, but more importantly, you’re going to pick a different path. Every person I know plays differently and has a different experience with Oblivion.”
